We all know about the Google Chromecast which allows you to stream media to your TV, well now Google have a new device called Chromecast Audio. What is Chromecast Audio I hear you asking – well, I was recently asked to test this new device out and you know how much I love a new gadget, and music so here is what I found out.
What is Chromecast Audio
The Chromecast Audio is a cute but powerful little device that allows you to stream music from your phone to any speaker in your home over WiFi – without the need for Bluetooth or pairing. What makes it super cool is that its so much cheaper than a Bluetooth speaker and the quality is much better. Although I have to say the Portable Bluetooth Speaker by Inatech is a powerful little Bluetooth speaker with little distortion which is also on sale right now. However, this device is great if you have some awesome speakers already in the house and at very little cost you can cast music from your phone or even your PC to them.
Chromecast Audio is compatible with Android – iOS – Windows and OS X
What’s in the box
- Chromecast Audio
- Power cable
- 3.5mm Audio Cable
There are other cables available but you do have to buy those.
Setting up the Chromecast Audio
The Chromecast audio doesn’t have an instruction book, just some instructions on how to set up the Chromecast Audio on the packaging, which some people might find confusing or just completely miss. Don’t get me wrong it is really simple to set up so they didn’t need to write much about it but you do need know that you need the ChromeCast App and it just tells you to go to Chromecast.com/setup which of course is where to get the app you need to then connect the music apps such as:-
- Google Play Music
- Napster Music Player
- Plug in the power cable into the Chromecast Audio
- Plug the audio cable into the Chromecast Audio and then into the speaker
- Plug the power cable into the wall socket.
Make sure you speakers are set up to Aux/Line-in
Now all have to do is download the Chromecast App – and other apps that you may want to use to stream music to your speakers.
- Click on the Chromecast App
- Choose an app
- Click the Cast button
- Click connect to device
- Click Play
You can then use your phone as a remote control to play various types of music on your speakers.
Once this is set up – some apps you can go to directly and start playing, although for Spotify you do need a premium account.
The Google Cast Extension
You can even add the Google Cast Extension to your Google Chrome and then use your PC or laptop to Cast Music to your speakers.
All in all for £30 you cannot go wrong with this device if you want to enjoy your music from your phone or your PC to your speakers.
