Social Network Emails – Your account may have been compromised – What to do.

zendesk

Users are still concerned after receiving emails saying that their accounts might have been compromised or the one entitled –  Important information regarding your security and privacy from social networking sites –  Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest.

The problem arose when Zendesk  who store and organise emails for customer support and help desks for these social networks had their systems hacked. Zendesk believe that during the security breach personal information such as email addresses linked to these platforms may have been downloaded by the hacker.

Quote from the zendesk blog

We believe that the hacker downloaded email addresses of users who contacted those three customers for support, as well as support email subject lines. We notified our affected customers immediately and are working with them to assist in their response.

This will only affect you if you have emailed customer support at Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr – which most of us have at some point. I imagine if you have then that is why you have received an email warning you of the breach. – There is no indication that passwords have been stolen at all.

So, I don’t think there is much to worry about here – if you are concerned you can change your passwords, in fact if it has been a while since you changed your passwords on these or any accounts then maybe you should anyway.

Phishing Scam

What we need to watch out for are bogus emails pretending to come from these platforms asking us to change our passwords with a link that looks like it comes from the social network itself. This is how hackers will then hack into your accounts with a Phishing scam email.   Sites like this never ask for your passwords via email, so it will be easy to spot if you do get a Phishing email.

Never, click links in emails like this – always – If you want to change your password – go directly to the site and click on change password.

How to change your passwords

For Twitter

Click the cog – settings – password (on the left)

For Tumblr

Click the Cog.

For Pinterest

Hover over your username – click settings and then Change Password.

Facebook Profile Viewer Scam – Who is looking at your timeline?

CC – http://www.flickr.com/photos/striatic/2192192956/

Can you see who is looking at your facebook profile

I last wrote about this scam 2 years ago, or a scam just like it – as the above link shows – and still we have not learned our lesson. We are still clicking and sharing these applications.  Who is watching your Profile, who are my Facebook profile visitors, who is looking at your timeline. Someone suggested we are curious, I think we are paranoid. Is my ex looking at what I am saying on Facebook? Does that boy I fancy know I stalk him on facebook? HA, not me!   You know you can block people or set your profile up so that not everyone can view it or even find it.

Facebook Profile Viewer Scam

This latest one appears to be an app called Facebook Profile Viewers, which was shared by a “friend” on Facebook to 45 people that I can see. If he did that on purpose I can only assume that he thought it was real – but I would probably put money on it that he has allowed the application into his account giving it permission to share with all of his Facebook friends.  This is getting very common now, where we have to allow these apps or services permissions we sometimes do it without thinking, click, click – done. ARGH!

I’ve no idea what sort of scam this is probably phishing scam, identity theft or virus, as I’ve not clicked it, and I don’t care – I just know that its not good – its bad!

Okay, yes I agree Facebook aren’t the greatest people for protecting our security, but it would very naughty of them if this application could even possibly be true, because they say this, on Facebook Help

Can people tell that I’ve looked at their timeline?

No, Facebook does not provide a functionality that enable people to track who is viewing their timeline. Third party applications also cannot provide this functionality. if you come across an application that claims to offer this ability, we encourage you to report it.

who is looking at your timeline

Can I know who is looking at my timeline or how often its being viewed?

No, Facebook does not provide a functionality that enables you to track who is view your timeline or parts of your timeline, such as photos.

Security Tips –  What you can do to keep your account safe  – Check number 7 – Think before you click or download anything, same here goes for Twitter – You can’t see who is looking at your Twitter profile either.

If you have been caught out by these scammers, hackers or whatever name you like to give them.

Reset your Password.

You can reset your password on the log in page – click – forgot your password.

If you are already logged in

  • Click Home

Where are my DM’s #Twitter

There have been an increasing amount of complaints regarding missing dm’s, lost messages, direct messages on Twitter recently and there are likely to be a few more in the next few days.

Twitter has deleted some users DM’s – Direct Messages.

Its okay, its just a twitter bug, they do know about it ….

Twitter Support says

Bug Alert:

  • Some users are currently experiencing an issue with direct messages disappearing, without the sender or receiver deleting them from their inbox.
  • Some users may experience a delay in DM delivery. A notification may arrive to your email inbox, but the DM won’t appear for some time after the email delivery.

These are bugs, and our engineers are hard at work to solve these issues. Follow @support for updates!

Also while we are talking about Twitter, there is another Phishing Scam going around that says Twitter is going to charge do not click this. Its similar to twitter scams where one t says, Is this picture about you, and Is this blog about you – these are still spreading like viruses after more than 6 months because people keep clicking them.

So if you do ever get your DM’s back – do not click suspicious links, it may look like its come from your friend but ask them first if they have sent you a link, as they won’t even know if its a Phishing scam.

Hope this helps

New Facebook Scam – Oakleys Sunglasses Hoax

There is a new Facebook scam that promises you a Free Pair of Oakleys Sunglasses. Its not from Oakley sadly, so no free sunglasses, just a hoax.

Slightly different to all of the other survey scams we have discussed.

The message appears on your friends wall, so you think it must be safe he has done it, wrong!

To celebrate the Summer, Oakley is giving away free shades to all Facebook users.

Its a two step process this time where you have to first share the link and then like the page – Liking the page takes you to a survey that asks for your personal information, this is something you should never put in a survey anyway.

As we’ve discussed before the reason behind this scam is that the scammer gets paid for every survey completed.

As writing this it seems that Facebook may have blocked the survey so that is one good thing but people are still sharing the link. Which in itself at the moment is harmless but I assume it won’t be long until the scammer links it to a different link.

If you have shared this please, delete it from your wall and if you have liked it – remove it. If done the survey I would even suggest changing your password as a precaution.

Never click anything that promises to give you something for nothing without checking it out first, we all know that never happens.

Hope this helps

Whitney Houston Scams – Be careful what you click

Picture from http://wn.com/Best_R&B_Album

Whitney Houston Scams

As usual when someone dies, the hackers, scammers, cyber criminals use it against us. They know we are weak, they know we are not paying attention. They know we are all fighting for new information or great tracks…

  • What happened?
  • Why did it happen?
  • Is it true?
  • What is going to happen?
  • I love that song!

This is when they get us, when we are not thinking, we click a link and bam – its gone to all our friends and family saying its safe because you liked it.

There are even some going around that say they are going to show you Whitney’s autopsy really? You’d click that?  Well I know some are so distraught they just need to know the facts.

The Autopsy one doesn’t take you to a YouTube link but says that flash needs to be updated, and you have to install.

Another one, takes you to a link to download Whitney wallpaper … woah!

Big Mistake – Huge!

You will be installing something very nasty!

Usually it will just take you to a survey site, which can be sorted out easily – but remember never ever put any information in these things. Never!

These are on Facebook and Twitter, and still going strong – although no reports on Google+ yet – hmm what does that tell you?

Remember, if in doubt, don’t click.

Hope this helps

Facebook video scam puts convincing personal message on your wall

More scams ….

I got this today – on my Facebook wall – shared by one of my friends, you might think it is authentic as it had my name in it.

It shows the link as a blogspot address which if you look at it – doesn’t look too real – UYTUTIUYUIUIOU looks like someone had a heart attack at the keyboard.

There is usually a telltale sign that says its a fake share – that is it on this one, apart from the fact it has a possible explicit picture beside the message.  There was another similar one recently with a different picture.

Hey Michelle u wont believe!  I dare you to watch this

98% Of People Cant Watch This Video For More Than 25 Seconds

I checked others that were shared and they had different messages but all with a personal touch.

Amazing! dave check the sad post I dare you can watch this .
Hey! kevin u wont believe! I dare you can watch this .

And so on …..

Obviously this is a scam, but a bit of a clever one – it tricks you into thinking that your friend has actually seen this video by using your name.  And it first makes you share the “video” before you’ve even seen it.   There is no video – but eventually a survey scam for you to fill out so that you pay the scammers.

Don’t be fooled into clicking this link ……

I think the fact that you shared this to all of your friends is enough fun for the scammers and there probably isn’t any actual hacking going on but as always I suggest…

As precaution check your allowed applications.

Go to your Privacy Settings,  Apps and Websites – Edit Settings – Apps you use – and check which apps that you have allowed.

Also change your password.

Hope this helps

Facebook scam video – OMG I just hate RIHANNA after watching this video

Rihanna OMG

OMG I just hate Rihanna after watching this video, has found its way to my friends facebook walls.

Scammers are using celebrities we like to get to us, this time its to watch Rihanna on youtube.   Scams are sometimes connected to celebrities because hackers know people just can’t wait to click that link without thinking, and by then its too late.

This particular scam has been around for ages now, its changed shape or form but essentially its always the same – this is what it looks like now…

As you see it tells you that you will LOST your all respect for RIHANNA after watching this, a tell-tail sign that its fake, its very bad English.

As many scams or hoaxes like this is actually a survey scam –  when you click the link it will take you to a survey – and you know the rest…. if you don’t, then read these! 🙂

These and many more are pretty much the same if not identical as the survey scam above, you don’t see a video at all but you are taken to a survey which if you complete the scammer gets paid for violating your page and  your friends and you get nothing.

Please try not to be fooled by these scams, I know its difficult if its something popular like this but ask yourself if the first place you would have heard about this would have been Facebook and not the news.

As precaution check your allowed applications.

Go to your Privacy Settings,  Apps and Websites – Edit Settings – Apps you use – and check which apps that you have allowed.

Also change your password.

Hope this helps

Facebook Gold Membership Hoax

The Gold Membership hoax could now cost money!  Fake “where to pay” sites are appearing.

Facebook users have been warned that facebook charging scams  like this are circulating, they are FAKE.  However people are still sharing these things –  I’ve seen facebook pages and messages with a link to a website to pay your money – don’t click it, and certainly don’t pay its bogus!

This one went viral really quickly …

FACEBOOK SUPPOSEDLY JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. Facebook have said themselves they have no intention of charging.

Being shared right now – I believe it is supposed to be a joke as it is very funny but people are taking it seriously.

Remember Facebook makes it money through advertising, and with new facebook there will be even more advertising, they do not need us to pay.

Don’t help the scammers scam others and just don’t repost or share for them.

Hope this helps…
