Is Twitch a Social Network

Is Twitch a social networkPeople are asking what is Twitch, is a social network?  To find out the answer to this first we need to know what is social networking and what are social networks for.

What is Social Networking

A social network service enables users to find like-minded individuals or people with the same interests to connect with. So a social network is basically that community or social relations. We use social networks to interact with others, we follow them, connect with them, share content with them. In short a social network is a community of people finding and communicating with each other, to be social within a network or on a platform.

So, is Twitch a social network

With the above meaning, to me, yes Twitch is a definitely social network.  Although Twitch is referred to as a broadcast media platform because Twitch is all about live streaming.  Some would say that it’s not classed as a social network.  Live streaming could actually be the next big thing in social media, its growing fast – With Social media, its all about connecting with your community and Twitch also has a community, a huge community of gamers and developers which has over 60 million views per month. And at just three years old, that is amazing.

On Twitch you can follow and connect with users, send messages and chat live to them while users are streaming.  The Twitch community is very friendly, and usually, friendships leak out of Twitch and on to other networks, of course, many of the streams are recorded and saved on Twitch and or saved to YouTube, plus more and more users of Twitch are making use of Twitter.

Whats so special about Twitch

If you have anything at all to do with the Gaming world you should be on Twitch. Its big now, and its going to get bigger, its the future.

Let me tell you this much – it’s not about watching kids gaming.

On Twitch streamers…

  • Are usually very skilled gamers
  • Promote your games by showing other users how cool they are
  • Show you the newest games before you might see them in action elsewhere
  • Create competitions and giveaways – where you can get in-game codes or codes to try out games for FREE
  • Raise money for charities whilst streaming
  • Chat with you, while they are streaming, you aren’t just watching, you are involved
  • Create how-tos and tutorials on new and old games, where you can ask questions on parts you are stuck
  • Are very helpful and will generally take time to answer any questions you might have and go out of their way to help you
  • and Twitch features the biggest events in gaming

Who owns Twitch

The acquisition was closed on September 25, 2014. Twitch is now operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of, with Emmett Shear remaining as CEO.

So, now you can see why Amazon would like to, and has acquired Twitch – hopefully, there won’t be too many changes – TechRadar spoke to Twitch recently to alleviate any fears about Twitch being bought by Amazon

Twitch is great fun, or can be very serious or helpful it depends on what you want out of it.

However, if you want to get involved with the biggest community of gamers then this is a very fast and easy way to do it.  If you need help with this, please let me know.

If any steamers have anything they can add to this or think I’ve got it wrong, please let me know below and I will add or correct anything.

UPDATE: December 2017 – Twitch has now added – Many more channels, it’s not all about gaming anymore but about creatives, about real-life, cosplay, people are doing chat shows, drawing, music shows, requests.  I think Facebook is still falling behind on Twitch.  Twitch have also added recently a mobile app and extensions which creates new ways to interact.

Gaming – The next generation – Nintendo 3DS

PS Vita. Wii U. With these consoles (possibly along with the PS4 and X-Box 720) launching over the next two years, the near future holds a lot for gaming. However, with a new set of consoles set to erupt onto the market, it would be easy to forget that the next generation has actually begun – albeit not explosively – with the 3DS.

Nintendo 3DS

I’ll be fair; the 3DS hasn’t exactly had the greatest year so far. After its launch in March, it sold poorly due to the lack of Nintendo’s usual quality software (to this date, there still isn’t a full Mario title out for the console) and the high price point. This led to an unprecedented price drop after less than six months from the console’s launch, which annoyed some fans and caused investors to worry about Nintendo’s future.

The worlds first glasses-free 3D Gadget

However, things could be turning around for the worlds first widespread glasses-free 3D gadget. With software titles like Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land and Sonic Generations out this year, on top of Kid Icarus and Resident Evil: Revelations due for a 2012 launch, the software drought could be over soon. On top of that, a new red 3DS is expanding the line-up of colour options for new comers to the console.

What really gives the 3DS potential to succeed though is innovation. Although they tend to shy away from producing the most powerful consoles, Nintendo have succeeded by innovating, by creating new ways to see videogames. And the 3DS is no different – besides the glasses-free 3D gaming, every console is capable of 3D photography (with video recording to be added in November), Augmented Reality and motion gaming with its accelerometers and gyroscope.

Nintendo – great potential

The potential these features have – especially in the hands of Nintendo – is incredible, and I for one can’t wait to see what more they do with them. Will it be enough to keep them safe from their traditional gaming competition, as well as the threat of smartphones though?

We’ll have to wait and see…

Sony PlayStation PSN back online makes for happy Tweeters!

We heard yesterday and through out today that from @playstation on and the PlayStation.Blog that Sony Playstation had started restoring PSN  services for the  US; Northeast, California, Southeast, Midwest and MId-Atl, West and Puerto Rico.

Happy Tweets have been flowing through twitter all day.  Right now Gamers are a happy as a geek at a free Star Wars convention.

Stormhansen #playstation #network is online! Better start#winning again ! 😀

peter_stephens #PSN is back up and all is well with the world again!!! #playstation #sony

Kim_Fuego #playstation Black Ops is baaaaaack!

And later tonight, we heard of many PPL in the UK either waiting for confirmation emails to change passwords, which seem to be taking sometime to get through, and again many tweets.

CoDBattles_com #Playstation in UK back online!

ThoLan36 Playstation Network is back online in the UK for Online Gaming, PS Store still undergoing maintenance #PSN #Playstation

CiaraDoyle85 #playstation network finally up and running in the uk. Gonna surround myself with drinks and snacks so I don’t have to move all night 🙂

MightyASLC #playstation3 #ps3 #psn #playstation network is back to #UK !!!

The PSN seems to limping on line again like a 3 legged camel but its started at least.  Strangely enough there aren’t too many people making derogatory remarks, about the huge downtime and the lack of information. The complaints have stopped for the time being.  One person did say that they don’t even care anymore, but on the whole there’s a huge buzz that gamers are live again.

Oh dear I spoke to soon as the tweets are coming through that the password reset link has gone down! There is doom and gloom again, it won’t last long, I assume there are a fair few people trying to reset their passwords all at once.

peteprodge @PlayStation Why the hell is the password reset link DEAD?

20Anthony11 @PlayStation trying reset my password online and the server goes down!!!! for ****sake has created a guide on how to change your PlayStation@Network Password.  The link is here

Just be careful about bogus emails from people asking for new passwords for PlayStation (looks like you do it online)  as I fear that will be next.

Above all, enjoy!
