Facebook took down the app that showed who unfriends you

Finally people had an application to see who unfriended them on Facebook, it seems its what people want to know – but Facebook didn’t like it and Facebook took down the app that showed who unfriends you.

So, why did Facebook ask for it to be removed?

Facebook took down the app that showed who unfriends you

The app was called “Who Deleted Me” and was available on iOS other mobiles and had extensions for browsers such as Chrome was created by Anthony Kuske. The app went viral last week and Anthony worked hard to be able to handle all of the traffic.  Only it seems that maybe it didn’t comply with Facebook’s terms of service, and I didn’t use Facebook’s new API so Facebook got rid of it.

Anthony says on the website

Dear users,

Unfortunately, due to a request by Facebook, Who Deleted Me is no longer available on any platform. If you have a Who Deleted Me browser extension or application installed it will no longer function.

Who Deleted Me was intended to be a useful tool to enhance users’ Facebook experience, but Facebook did not see it the same way.

Never did I expect it would achieve the level of popularity it did over the last week, from being mentioned all over the media to being number 1 in the iOS App Store. Thank you to everybody who installed it and for your patience while the servers were improved to handle all the traffic. The level of traffic took me by surprise and I worked non stop to get it back online so everybody could enjoy it. By Thursday it was working well for everybody so I hope you had a chance to use it before now.

All personal information has been securely erased.

If you would like to know about any future (non Facebook) projects you can follow me on Twitter, or email me with any questions. If you would like to help fund the development of new projects any donations would be appreciated

Facebook took down the app that showed who unfriends you

According to MTV NEWs

“All developers building apps that integrate with Facebook, requesting information about people, must use a Facebook API, which ensures that people maintain control over who is accessing their information,” a Facebook spokesperson told MTV News. “We take action against any app that violates our terms and policies.”

There does appear to be many apps or programs that claim they give tell you who unfriended you on Facebook or Who looked at your Facebook profile – but these are probably not secure apps and we would advise you to steer clear of them.

If you really want to know who unfriended you on Facebook, you’ll just have to look them up one by one, we say live and let live and don’t worry about it.

how many networks are there

How Many Social Networks Are There?

don't panicPeople are often surprised at how many social networks there actually are, they often think of just Facebook and Twitter.

Wait for it… there are literally hundreds of social networking sites, more than 500 in fact.  That’s without counting all of the Chinese and other countries networks such as China’s Tencent who own WeChat with 200 million users. . However, out of the 500+ not all are of good quality or exactly thriving but they are available, and might just be the next big thing.

Some social networking platforms are obviously more popular than others and many of them you may not class as a social network but if its aim is to be social and to share and connect with other users then it’s often called a social network, social media platform or social site, and you can even include mobile applications in this such as Path a social networking-enabled photo sharing and messaging service for mobile devices.

Which network should I be on for my business?

Don’t panic though; you do not have to have an account on all 500+ networks for your business, that would be crazy. This is why Fairy Dust keeps up with emerging networks to ascertain which networks fit into your niche, your brand or your industry. We regularly test and review new sites, and many old sites that we might have just heard about to see what benefits there might be to join.

  • Media
  • Technology
  • Gaming
  • Music
  • Retail
  • Business to Business
  • Construction
  • Finance
  • Health
  • Cosmetics
  • Transport

All of the above are totally different industries which would have different needs; so which networks do you need to be would be a difficult question to answer here, right now. It could just be that the more active networks that you can manage the better reach you will have but some people cannot handle this and don’t want to.   Some businesses prefer to outsource their online activities to a social media manager, with social networking stills that would provide a social media strategy and manage the networks for you.

However, a good place to start would be to use or choose from the top ten social networks or applications.

The top 10 social media sites

The top ten social media sites are so called because they are the most popular and have the most monthly visitors or users.

1 – Facebook

2 – GooglePlus

3 – YouTube

4 – Twitter

5 – Pinterest

6 – Linkedin

7 – Tumblr

8 – Instagram

9 – MySpace

10 – Efactor

Although this list is in no particular order, that is how I would feature the top four.  And of course, again depending on your business, YouTube might not need to be included (although Video is the way to go if you can) and other networks might feature in your chosen networks such as Foursquare.

For really small businesses that don’t have the time it’s often suggested that they start with one network and really build that up until they start the next one, this will obviously take a very long time, and social networking done properly does take a long time.

Many people still do not “get” Googleplus saying that there is nothing to it, these people aren’t on Google plus or are not using it properly. Google plus is thriving, its more popular than Twitter and its fast approaching taking over Facebook in popularity.  Pinterest is also a network you might be surprised at, 3 years since the launch was reported at having 70 million users in July 2013.

Googleplus however should not be sniffed at as it is really a requirement for a business, or blogger –  for many reasons and one is search, the more you share your blogs posts on Google plus the more chance you have appearing in a Google search another top reason is Google authorship.

So, in answer to the question “How many social networks are there”, the answer is that you really do not have to worry about how many but which social networks should your business be a part of to maximize its social media presence.-

Giraffe profile pictures

Giraffe profile pictures on Facebook

giraffe profile pictureYesterday I started seeing giraffe pictures pop up on peoples Facebook profiles, I didn’t think anything of it as people are often putting crazy pictures up in support of something.  However, today I started to see a load more, so I had to ask what’s with the Giraffe profile pictures

Giraffe profile pictures

It turns out there is a riddle going around: The Giraffe riddle challenge – if you get the riddle wrong, you have to put up a giraffe profile picture up for three days, and if you get it right, then everyone has to say how wonderful you are.

I played the game and got it wrong. I agreed to change my profile pic to a Giraffe if I got the riddle wrong. The Great Giraffe Game! … The deal is I give you a riddle. You get it right you get to keep your profile pic. You get it wrong and you change your profile pic to a Giraffe for the next 3 days.

Here is the riddle: 3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors, It’s your parents and they are there for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?

Remember… message me only. If you get it right I’ll post your name here. If you get it wrong change your profile pic. – go on!! you know you want a giraffe pic on
your wall

You then have to private message the person with the answer if you want to play.

I think this was the original riddle but since then different Giraffe riddles have appeared up because this one is worded incorrectly – and so misleads you, which is why everyone is *seemingly* getting it wrong.

Of course, now there are giraffe jokes flying around.

Its funny really how everyone seems to get involve in these things, this is like a chain letter really but not exactly spam but for fun.  It just shows the power of social networks though doesn’t it.  If we can do this for fun, we should be able to do it for charities and causes easily.

It’s odd is that I am seeing more Giraffes that riddles – it would be good if you put the riddle up about why you have a giraffe profile picture I guess.  Not that I’m asking people to flood our feeds with riddles though.

I noticed to that there is a Giraffe failure support group on Facebook too – https://www.facebook.com/groups/giraffefailure/

All in good fun.

Let me know if you got it right.

Update – Giraffe game isn’t a virus or a hack.

There are many posts being shared now that say that either the message is a virus or that the Giraffe challenge was set up by the hacking group “Anonymous”.

Apparently they’re going to embark on a random ‘cleansing’ program which will wipe out the bank accounts and hard drives of those people who have giraffe profile pics…A few of my FB friends have already had it happen, so change your pics back!!!!

None of this is true, its a harmless game, and as long as you haven’t clicked a link attached to the (or any) status update, then you cannot get a virus by sharing it and adding Giraffe profile pictures on Facebook

Please see comments below for more info.

Glide Video Texting App

Glide Video Texting App

glideappThis Free Glide Video Texting App looks really cool.

With Glide you are able to send video messages that are saved in the cloud to watch later or you can use the video to have real time chat.  With just one person or even in a group.

To me, right now glide does sound just awesome.

They just did one thing to let me down.

Log in with Facebook

The only down side for me is that you have to (at the moment) log in via Facebook.  However don’t freak out, they are working on some other sign up options.  In one way signing up with Facebook does give the app some security.  As obviously its only people you call  your friends that can send you Glides.  However with a stand alone app you could have it so that only people you allow can send you video messages, maybe even with a code like BBM.

Another thing I’m concerned with using Facebook or Twitter to sign in are the extra messages you will get, and I have seen reports of spam which can only be the reason for this – please no private messages or dm’s for people to sign up? Please let me know if you have received spam? I’d like to know why.

It seems the spam problem is thank fully sorted out.

Glide Video Texting

We all know by now that video is the way to go – look at how popular Vine is and Instagram videos (not including YouTube here as its not really instant sharing)  and with live chat people love skype, Google hangouts and Face-time.  Glide seems to be all of those things put together.

Glide Instant video messages

With Smart Phones now you can have any virtually any social media or network or messaging app at your finger tips – this is why texting is so last year and people love to see you, to see what you are doing, its more personal more attainable and the Glide Video Texting App is instant.   Messages with Glide are immediately broadcast as it is recording, so that if the person is available they will see it right away, they don’t have to be there they can look at it later if they want.  What I like about it is that its not two way as such, and if you are in a hurry and just want to send a quick message you don’t get delayed by questions, HA – people can they answer you with another video but you can watch it later.  You can even invite several people to watch, those that are around will see right away, others will be notified they have a Video message.

I want to wait until they have another way of logging in before I get my Glide Video Texting app set up, but I may give in to peer pressure before that time – its all ready and waiting on my iPhone so I hope they hurry!

I think this video from Glide will explain it more clearly.

So what is Glide, exactly?

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation), iPad Wi-Fi + 4G, iPad (4th generation), iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (4th generation), iPad mini and iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular. Requires iOS 6.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

Have you tried Glide?  What do you think?

Facebook Profile Viewer Scam – Who is looking at your timeline?

CC – http://www.flickr.com/photos/striatic/2192192956/

Can you see who is looking at your facebook profile

I last wrote about this scam 2 years ago, or a scam just like it – as the above link shows – and still we have not learned our lesson. We are still clicking and sharing these applications.  Who is watching your Profile, who are my Facebook profile visitors, who is looking at your timeline. Someone suggested we are curious, I think we are paranoid. Is my ex looking at what I am saying on Facebook? Does that boy I fancy know I stalk him on facebook? HA, not me!   You know you can block people or set your profile up so that not everyone can view it or even find it.

Facebook Profile Viewer Scam

This latest one appears to be an app called Facebook Profile Viewers, which was shared by a “friend” on Facebook to 45 people that I can see. If he did that on purpose I can only assume that he thought it was real – but I would probably put money on it that he has allowed the application into his account giving it permission to share with all of his Facebook friends.  This is getting very common now, where we have to allow these apps or services permissions we sometimes do it without thinking, click, click – done. ARGH!

I’ve no idea what sort of scam this is probably phishing scam, identity theft or virus, as I’ve not clicked it, and I don’t care – I just know that its not good – its bad!

Okay, yes I agree Facebook aren’t the greatest people for protecting our security, but it would very naughty of them if this application could even possibly be true, because they say this, on Facebook Help

Can people tell that I’ve looked at their timeline?

No, Facebook does not provide a functionality that enable people to track who is viewing their timeline. Third party applications also cannot provide this functionality. if you come across an application that claims to offer this ability, we encourage you to report it.

who is looking at your timeline

Can I know who is looking at my timeline or how often its being viewed?

No, Facebook does not provide a functionality that enables you to track who is view your timeline or parts of your timeline, such as photos.

Security Tips –  What you can do to keep your account safe  – Check number 7 – Think before you click or download anything, same here goes for Twitter – You can’t see who is looking at your Twitter profile either.

If you have been caught out by these scammers, hackers or whatever name you like to give them.

Reset your Password.

You can reset your password on the log in page – click – forgot your password.

If you are already logged in

  • Click Home
  • Account settings
  • Edit Password.

Try to choose a password that is a mixture of numbers and letters and punctuation marks.

Hope this helps

Is your employer blocking social sites or asking for passwords?

HR must embrace social

I find it amazing that employers would ask for your Facebook Passwords. In one way I can understand why they would block Social Networks if they think you are wasting company time looking at tweets, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Employer asked for Facebook Password

This infographic from Compliance and Safety.com shows –

  • Asking for an employers password is a clear invasion of privacy
  • Will cause bad relations with bosses and staff
  • Could initiate a discrimination lawsuit.
  • It actually violates Facebook’s privacy terms.

With regard to blocking social sites at work, most people are not stupid enough to be on Facebook during work hours if it is not part of their own job but might like to catch up in their lunch hour or break times. However, even better it could be used for the companies benefit – IE talking about great things that are happening that day, an event at work, a new product –  This is free advertising!

Amazingly school and colleges in the UK are known to block social networking sites for staff and students on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, gaming sites, and even NEWs sites – Not just for young children but for college children studying courses such as computer science. It would be more beneficial to teach children how to use the sites properly.

Recently I’ve even heard of 2 or 3 friends employers banning their staff from even having social media accounts,  which to me in incredible!   Has any of this happened to you? I’d love to know, its fascinating to me.

Take a look at the infographic and let me know your experiences in this.

Is the company you work for social media savvy or do they think its something that needs to be banned and blocked for safety.

Facebook Private Messages appearing on Timeline isn’t Privacy Bug

TechCrunch alerted readers that private messages were appearing on Timeline as posted by friends.

I think people might actually be getting paranoid about Facebook privacy now. I must say I’ve never trusted it either.  So is it a hoax or not?

Today we read a post created by Techcrunch – They said that private messages were appearing on your timeline, they said it didn’t seem worldwide, it appeared so far to be only in France. The messages appeared in a box that said friends posted to your wall.

I was half convinced that this was an isolated case but I headed over to my wall – timeline to check, and I noticed 2 posts that could have been private messages – I thought, Wow its true, this is bad – and I continued on to see if I could find any more – but I couldn’t.  I did indeed find the box they mentioned for the year 2009 with about 200 wall messages from friends, but they were not private messages, mostly birthday wishes. These have always been visible on your Facebook wall.

However, it was most strange as people were still angry, and saying that they definitely have old private messages on their timeline for everyone too see.

Then we saw a post from the BBC saying that the Facebook private message rumour is false. Although the report was sketchy and refered to its supplier of information as “The Source”

A short while after TechCrunch updated their own website and took it all back……

Facebook confirms no private messages appearing on timeline.

Facebook also says in no uncertain terms that there is absolutely no privacy bug. What people are seeing are old Wall postings, not private messages. A spokesperson told Constine:

“Every report we’ve seen, we’ve gone back and checked. We haven’t seen one report that’s been confirmed

[of a private message being exposed]. A lot of the confusion is because before 2009 there were no likes and no comments on wall posts. People went back and forth with wall posts instead of having a conversation [in the comments of single wall post.]“

Facebook also told Constine there are technical barriers that prevent private messages from appearing as wall posts. “The two systems are totally separate.”

So its not exactly a hoax it seems that, someone just got it wrong. Although I am seeing people still convinced they have seen messages on their own Timeline that were private messages, and they think that Facebook is lying.

Apparently, the posts look odd because we didn’t used to have “comments” posts would just go back and forth on a persons wall. So this is where people were getting confused.

Do you think you are confused, or are you certain that Private messages are / were on your wall, I’d love to hear.

How to hide these supposed private Facebook messages

If you are worried – Go to your timeline – click on the year at the side, you will see a box Post of friends

  1. Hover over the box and click
  2. Click Hide from Timeline
Or if you did hide them and now want to unhide these posts.

How to unhide facebook posts.

Go to your activity log – which is just under your cover picture next to update info

This is everything in your timeline but only you can see it all. On the right at the top you see a button – ALL

Click this and then HIDDEN – you will then see all the posts you have hidden – click the circle at the end of the line and then allowed on time line.

Evidently Facebook say its just not possible, in the same way that Twitter says that its not possible for anyone too see who is looking at your Twitter profile page.

With the privacy claims Facebook have been involved with, would they be stupid enough to allow this to happen?

Let us know what you think.
