Glide Video Texting App

Glide Video Texting App

glideappThis Free Glide Video Texting App looks really cool.

With Glide you are able to send video messages that are saved in the cloud to watch later or you can use the video to have real time chat.  With just one person or even in a group.

To me, right now glide does sound just awesome.

They just did one thing to let me down.

Log in with Facebook

The only down side for me is that you have to (at the moment) log in via Facebook.  However don’t freak out, they are working on some other sign up options.  In one way signing up with Facebook does give the app some security.  As obviously its only people you call  your friends that can send you Glides.  However with a stand alone app you could have it so that only people you allow can send you video messages, maybe even with a code like BBM.

Another thing I’m concerned with using Facebook or Twitter to sign in are the extra messages you will get, and I have seen reports of spam which can only be the reason for this – please no private messages or dm’s for people to sign up? Please let me know if you have received spam? I’d like to know why.

It seems the spam problem is thank fully sorted out.

Glide Video Texting

We all know by now that video is the way to go – look at how popular Vine is and Instagram videos (not including YouTube here as its not really instant sharing)  and with live chat people love skype, Google hangouts and Face-time.  Glide seems to be all of those things put together.

Glide Instant video messages

With Smart Phones now you can have any virtually any social media or network or messaging app at your finger tips – this is why texting is so last year and people love to see you, to see what you are doing, its more personal more attainable and the Glide Video Texting App is instant.   Messages with Glide are immediately broadcast as it is recording, so that if the person is available they will see it right away, they don’t have to be there they can look at it later if they want.  What I like about it is that its not two way as such, and if you are in a hurry and just want to send a quick message you don’t get delayed by questions, HA – people can they answer you with another video but you can watch it later.  You can even invite several people to watch, those that are around will see right away, others will be notified they have a Video message.

I want to wait until they have another way of logging in before I get my Glide Video Texting app set up, but I may give in to peer pressure before that time – its all ready and waiting on my iPhone so I hope they hurry!

I think this video from Glide will explain it more clearly.

So what is Glide, exactly?

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation), iPad Wi-Fi + 4G, iPad (4th generation), iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (4th generation), iPad mini and iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular. Requires iOS 6.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

Have you tried Glide?  What do you think?

Curiosity – whats inside the cube – iPhone Application

Curiosity – I hope it didn’t kill the cat

My son just showed me a Yogscast video about a new application on the iPhone that has been created by Peter Molyneux at 22cans – and has already taken the world by storm.  The servers have already collapsed under the stress of the popularity of this game.

22cans call it an experiment or a competition.

Curiosity the cube

When you first open the application it just says – Are you curious !

Its simple but its so exciting!!!!!!

 Why is Curiosity so exciting?

The aim of the game to click madly at the blocks or cubelets on a GIANT rotating cube to destroy them  all with everyone else that has the application at the same time to see what is inside the box …… CRAZY …. gaming gone mad.

Everyone that has the application is chipping away at the same box, some people are creating pictures, text messages and even QR codes while they chip away at the side of the box… This website shows some of the creations – many aren’t very tasteful so don’t look if you are easily offended http://onthecube.tumblr.com/

My son created this one, very good I thought..

What I don’t understand is, that there are all these people playing this game (some call it an experiment) players are drawing these pictures and yet, I’ve looked and looked on the Cube and I can’t find any, not one, not a sign of anyone else.  You can’t see other blocks being destroyed either, so in fact it feels like you are alone.  Interesting…….

Edit:  Now on the next layer, its red – I can see other players, text and drawings. The server problems seem to be easing – making it much easier to connect to the game. However, there is lag with it updating, I’m not sure how often it updates, but my son can see the game further on than I can, which is weird.

What’s in the box

Only one person will see what is inside the box .  WILL IT BE YOU??

….this will be the last person to get rid of the last tile – they are the winner …….  OH NO!!!

The winner of the competition will automatically be sent a video link on their device explaining what is at the centre of the cube, what they do with that information is totally up to them. However they are not allowed to use the information to make money, so you can’t sell the information to the tabloids!

You get coins for destroying blocks and clearing your screen – which you need to see stats or to get tools to help you destroy the  blocks – you can also use real money to buy coins to use the ingame tools.   A great idea for the developer to make money from the app which is free from Apple app store.

You can link up with Facebook to track your progress and rank against your friends, and apparently see where your friends are tapping and accrue bonuses through your Facebook friends joining. Although I haven’t been able to do this yet, I keep getting 500 internal server error.

Can’t join the Curiosity server

I’ve been just looking at my sons application because – its so gone crazy I can’t even access the server – oh no!  now he’s got kicked off.

They are definitely having server problems, I hope they manage to fix that soon.

He got back in but he’s lost all of his coins, awful!!   Oh no he’s kicked out again!

If you can’t join the game – just keep hitting retry until you get it. You do eventually.

Peter Molyneux was trying to help everyone yesterday by keeping players or gamers informed that the team are trying to fix the coin problem and the server problems but they were trying to make the changes while the server was live. Many are still having trouble joining in the Cube game.

peter molyneux ‏@pmolyneux

Everyone please remember something as concurrent as this has never been attempted before, and we’re just a tiny company.

This is awesome ……….not the bit about getting kicked off the Curiosity servers but its fantastic to have something totally different, and that everyone on the internet can join in together!

Weird – Amazing – Strange – What’s inside the box!!

Available on itunes – Curiosity

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

What do you think is going to be inside the cube – I wonder if it will be a let down in the end!

What does 1GB data allowance mean – Mobile

What is data allowance

I hate being restricted to how much mobile data allowance I have – you are never sure how  much you you are using.  Thats why if I can, I will always go for unlimited, or as Three.uk call it  All-you-can-eat-data when sorting out my tariffs.

When going on holiday people are always asking me – how long can I go on the internet for if I only have so much data allowance per day – the trouble is it doesn’t really work that way – it depends what you are doing.

Orange now have an app to help you with holiday useage called Travel Angel – on iTunes – I haven’t tested it yet, and to be honest it doesn’t have good reviews but it looks to be perfect for setting up holiday packages and keeping an eye on data usage – more about that later.

Three uk know that people are very confused about how much data certain websites or operations use, so they have created this infographic to show the difference between All-you-can-eat-data and 1GB data allowance.  I love this and it makes it all very clear, hopefully to you too.

What is All-You-Can-Eat-Data

The funny thing is about unlimited or All you can eat is that its not really unlimited – there is always some limit and on Three UK  this is based on what they say your smartphone can handle which is about 1000GB per month, so that is huge!

Additionally – Three actually have some amazing tariff deals on the apple iphone 5 32gb at the moment which looks like you get a free phone too – I have to wait though unless I buy out of my contract – besides lightning doesn’t make me happy – I’d need to get loads of adapters. So I’ll be sticking with my Iphone 4s and my iPad 2 for a while.

Hope this helps

DrawingSomething Application including Bugs and Fixes

Its been all go recently with Intragram being bought by Facebook and now DrawSomething from OMGPOP being bought by Zynga of Farmville fame for massive amounts of money it seems. Hopefully Zynga will sort out some of the problems that people are experiencing.

Where can I play DrawSomething

If you still don’t know what Drawsomething is (where have you been?) – it is a drawing game similar to Pictionary where you draw a picture and people guess what it is, you can play this with Facebook friends or random people using the iPhone or iPad from iTunes.

You can also play it directly from Facebook or on Google Plus.

The app has a free game and a paid game – the only difference I can see is that you do not get adverts on the paid game.

People are really good at this game, you can see some of the drawings on the DrawSomething Facebook page

iSketch

I played DrawSomething on Facebook first because it reminded me of a browser based game which I was addicted to about 12 years ago called iSketch which is still there after all of these years, I think they should have created an application don’t you.  There is an application called iSketch but this is just a basic painting app. The best game play of DrawSomething is actually on the iPad, I love how you can just Draw something and then put it down for as long as you like.

Drawsomething has bugs

There are however many bugs still within the Drawsomething application.  I’ve had one where the application got confused and showed my drawing with the previous drawings letters, so the letters didn’t fit the drawing. Like this one drawn on the iPhone (which I find difficult so don’t laugh! LOL )

Missing Colours, Bombs and Coins

On the game you can buy coins to buy new colours and bombs which can give you new words or hints.

Users also have other bugs where coins, bombs and colours – colors – are missing. I read these responses and fixes on the getsatisfaction forum, which is for all support for the game – only go there if you are not easily offended. 🙂

Here’s Swiftor’s official response:

They are safe, but your game client is not reading your inventory info from our servers properly. We’re looking into this – but in the meantime, there are a couple of things you can try doing to get them to show up:
1) If you’re on Wifi, and your device supports 3g/4g – try that. There are reported cases of coins/etc not showing up on wifi. (or vice versa)

2) You can try killing the app and restarting it (or restarting your phone).

Again, we’re looking into a final solution for this!

Another response was from a user call SVNDR – DS is DrawSomething. This fix he says is for iPhone 4s and iPad. Many people said this has worked.

1. Kill all backgrounding apps, including DS (double click home button).

2. Re-open DS.

3. Click the little gear in the top right-hand corner.

4. Click on account.

5. Now, scroll to the very bottom of that page a click logout, then confirm the next message that pops up (if one does)

6. You should now be logged out and at the screen to select either Facebook or Email.

7. Now close DS and then kill it in the backgrounding bar like you did in step 1.

8. Wait about 5-10 second then re-open DS.

9. Wait for it to load to the screen to select between Facebook or Email.

10. Click on whatever form of login you would normally use (i use Facebook).

11. Enter your email and password, then continue to login as normal.

12. Now this is what i think truely helps, so make sure you pay attention and DO NOT skip any of the previous, or next steps!!
Once you are logged in, DO NOT touch anythng, instead look in the top left-hand corner off the main screen, you should see a faint loading icon that spins around. Wait until that icon is completely gone until you continue to the next step.

13. Now that the loading icon is gone, DO NOT open or continue playing any games, yet. First, scroll to the very bottom of the main screen and click on the ‘SHOP’ button.

14. If you previously had purchased bombs, you should now see at the bottom that you have your bombs back, this should most likely mean that your colours and coins have returned aswell.

15. If you did not previously have bombs then you should see the top of the screen in the left-hand side that your coins are back.

Many users are also having problems with games not loading, both on the free game and the paid version –  some games are showing waiting for next player.  There are hundreds of complaints about this on the site, and as yet I have not found a solution, although the above might work.  If you have tried this or have a different solution can you please let us know.

Apart from all that it is a great game and very addictive, but as I say you can just play for a few mins and then put it down for however long you want and it will still be at the stage you left it.

Hope this helps

Fix for iPhone Twitter application not showing mentions

Twitter, iPhone and Android app not showing mentions for some users.

I’ve seen people talking about this, one person said they hadn’t had an @ message – mention for 4 days, when pressing the connect tab – button.

So searched twitter to find out how common it was, and I found quiet a few people complaining.

  • No mentions showing up
  • NO @ mentions on twitter
  • I’m not getting replies on twitter
  • My iPhone has gone bonkers
  • No refresh on the twitter application

Apparently twitter know about this and are working on a fix – I hope its quicker than the fix for unfollowing our followers for us

Here is the fix for iPhone iOS5

To get your mentions back you need delete the account that is not working and re-adding it to the application.

To remove your twitter account on the iPhone on iOS5

Go Settings – Twitter

Click the account that is not working – Press Delete Account

Confirm Deletion

Then go back to the first Twitter settings screen and press Add account

Then just type in your user name and password again – and it works – well it did for me.

Android users would be pretty much the same but I don’t have one right now to show you the steps.

Hope this helps

Need an honest opinion? Ask Opinionaided.

Do you need an honest opinion on something? Opinionaided is a mobile social networking application designed for asking opinions and advice to a large community in real-time.   Similar to Quora (which came after)  but from what I’ve seen it seems that this one is more used by the younger generation for questions such as –  Do you like my new hairstyle?  or Am I good-looking  –  whereas Quora is more for business type questions I find.  However, you can filter these questions out and just go to a specific topic.

Opinionaided was launched in 2010 by founder Dan Kurani and co-founders Mike Melli and Matt Holloway and already has many users.

Originally for iPhone, ipod, and iPad, but is now available on Android and Online.

The interesting thing about Opinionaided is the phenomenal response rate – the first time I used it I asked a pretty lame question and within seconds I had 10 answers!  What networking site can you say that about?

Its very easy to use there are five buttons at the bottom of the screen which are

  • Home – Where you get two options – Ask for Opinions / Give your opinion
  • Ask – Where you ask you question
  • Vote – Where you can give your opinion and vote for questions.
  • Results – Here you can see the answers to your questions and who you helped with your answers.
  • Me – This is your profile page.

Need an honest opinion – how to ask

Type in your question, add a photo, and select a category, you can choose who to send it too, including any of your friends. You can also choose who not to include using the vote stream filter –  then press Get Opinions!

At the top of this page you have 3 choices – Public – Friends – Contacts – or post to facebook or twitter.

You can check your responses on your question by going to results – here you can give people stars for the best answers or reply directly to them, which would then be in private.

To give an opinion

You can just go right ahead and start voting in Random or you can go to the top right button and select a category.  You press thumbs up or thumbs down and type your opinion.  To pass you can press Neutral.  If you give a good answer you will get stars for your answer.

There are many chances to find friends, on the friends button – it pops up all over the place.  You can find Facebook friends, Twitter friends, scan contacts or Search Opinionaided.

The last button at the bottom is ME.

Here you can see your profile – and see how many votes you’ve given and how many good advice stars you have received, people seem to be very generous giving stars.

You can also do this online, you can sign in using your application account details.

You have to be over 13 to use this application but it is easy to get around this. My son says that there are many kids younger than this on there, asking inappropriate questions or answering them. Although it seems to be monitored, and users can get banned or warned. Also if you put links or anything commercial it will get removed – not sure if that is only if it is flagged.  There is a flag icon at the top of the question page and on user profiles to file reports.

Advice for asking questions given by Opinionaided

  • Ask clean questions seeking honest opinions and advice.
  • Use appropriate pictures that relate to your question.
  • Make sure your question can be answered with a Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down.
  • Be real, truthful and honest. Nobody likes a fake.
  • Give other people helpful, polite advice. We’re all in this together!

My son, who is 17 has been using this application for months and must be one of the top users, I think that he is trying to get to be a Top Adviser. However –  I really didn’t like the sound of it, but because of his enthusiasm and because I love to test out applications I had to try it, and I really can see how it can be very addictive, and useful.

Need an honest opinion? Check it out

Hope this helps

Blippar – The QR code killer ?

Blippar – The QR code killerWho or what is Blippar… and is it The QR code killer !?

Blippar is a Uk Company that launched its free image recognition application earlier this year in android and apple stores.  Blippar is a new way to advertise or to get people interested in your brand, it might not be The QR code killer but it is a great way to use marketing and the technology we love at the same time. Blippar call it a little bit of magic in our phones.

Blippar™ is the first universal augmented reality platform aimed at advertisers.

Blippar Marmite

Turn a real world object in front of you into an interactive experience by using your phone, genius!

What it does is similar to the QR code, which I do love – but it is far, far more. The application uses the camera to recognise products. It might be actual bottles and packets or maybe posters, adverts, a building or even your logo on your business card or cup anything in the real word that is blippable you can turn into digital connections, information or interactive entertainment. The list is infact endless!

You hold your phone over the blippable item and you will see some magic appear, whether this be interactive games, interactive adverts or web-links like a video or even a coupon, its seemingly 3D as you can twist a turn the camera and it will appear to stay in the same place as you move around it.

I hadn’t taken much notice of Blippar before now, however, I saw this video by Randy Miller http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRKYYrZTWho and his enthusiasm about this application really gripped me.

There doesn’t seem to be a vast amount of items that are blippable as yet, but the potential is huge – they already have some big names involved we just need the others to join.  I’m not sure this would be suitable for smaller organisations, as there must be a setup cost, where as of course QR codes are free. Yet, I hope that in time as it gets more and more mainstream it will end up cost effective enough for all to use.  (Not that I have any idea’s on costs).

What is also great is you can share what you like with your friends, on facebook, twitter or email.

To use Blippar is pretty easy too

To use blippar:

  1. Browse the catalogue for blipp-able things or look for a blippar ‘b’ in the real world
  2. Turn on blippar, hold phone up in ‘blipp’ mode (select the middle ‘b’ to start the camera), fill camera screen with the image, product or logo
  3. Blipp (your navigation and the orange button will slide off screen as a blipp is recognised). Note: no photo taking or touching or tapping of the screen required
  4. Just hold, wait, enjoy… and share
  5. Click the camera icon on the screen when experiencing a ‘blipp’ to snap a photo of it and share immediately via facebook, twitter or email
  6. Rate your blipps, leave feedback or suggest other blipps that you might like to see

Tips & tricks:

  • Fill the screen with as much of the target image as you can – as squarely on as possible
  • Hold very still and wait…
  • When blippar has recognised the image, the orange navigation will disappear and your overlaid content will appear
  • If nothing appears, move camera away from the image and then back again
  • Make sure your light is good, but avoid light reflecting off the image as far as possible
  • Once your blipp has appeared on the screen you can ‘track’ it – moving your phone in, out, and at angles to explore the content in more detail. If you lose the blipp, simply refocus as above to pick it back up
  • If you like what you see, share the blipp with your friends – via email, facebook, twitter or good old fashioned word of mouth
  • Blippar resyncs with new content every time you open it. Try to ensure you have access to a strong 3G or wifi connection when opening it after a while to ensure your content is speedy and up to date.
So, I hope that you download this free application and give it a try, it is pretty amazing.  You can see more on Blippar‘s Website.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.  You can see if Blipper is The QR code killer
REQUIRES ANDROID:2.2 and up
Please note that the Android version of blippar is still in beta, we would appreciate any bug reports, suggestions or requests to be sent to info@blippar.com
Hope this helps

Buffer for Facebook is coming.

Do you share a lot of posts on your Facebook, maybe your own blogs or articles you have read, and because you only get on Facebook for a short amount of time each day they tend to be bunched up all together?  Then this could be for you.

Buffering…

Its a way to get your Facebook updates spread out and so you get noticed more.

Buffer helps you post more consistently by allowing you to choose set times to post each day. Once you’ve chosen the times, you simply keep a ‘buffer’ of posts topped up and the application will automatically post on your behalf.

Simply – Buffer schedules your updates or tweets.

With the Browser extensions, for Chrome, Safari and Firefox –  its really simple to share any page that you read, you just hit the Buffer icon, buffer then create the update for you automatically.  You can also choose there and then to either post right away, or add it to your Buffer.   You can also share posts that you find interesting in your Google reader by clicking the Buffer icon, and Buffer will sort it all out for you.

Another option with Buffer is using the “send to” function which you will see at the bottom of every article, here you can chose whether to send to Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr or whatever you have linked to Buffer.

Putting on your own Buffer button.

1.) Click “Options” on the top right corner of your Google Reader

2.) Click on “Reader Settings”

3.) Click “Send To”

4.) Scroll down and click “Create a Custom Link”

5.) Input these three things:

Name: Buffer

URL: http://bufferapp.com/add?url=${url}&text=${title}

Icon URL: http://bufferapp.com/images/logo_icon_small.png

6.) Click “Save”

From now on you can simply click the “Send to” on every article and the Buffer Popup will come up for you to add your update or tweet.

At last iTunes has a Google+ App for Apple iPhone !

The Google+ app has arrived for iPhone!

Since the Android app was launched for Google plus, we Apple users on Google+ have been patiently waiting (for a couple of weeks!) for an iTunes application, although to be fair it was pretty good using Safari.

As far as I know Apple has had it for over a week for approval. Finally it is available for 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 – Nothing for the iPod Touch, or the iPad available yet!

I couldn’t actually find it via the App Store from the iPhone yet  (it is appearing now under realease date) however

Download Google+ for iPhone here using itunes   http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google/id447119634

This is a free application and it will be interesting to see, what it will creep up to in the free application charts and how long it will take.

Be aware, as I did find another application created by someone else that was 69p

Message recieved on – Google+ via iTunes from +Punit Soni

We discovered an issue with the version of the iPhone Google+ App that was on the App Store. When we launched, the App Store started serving a previous test version of the App which didn’t have the stability and fixes that the latest version had. It started serving the correct version a little later. If you downloaded within the first 1 hour 40 mins, you may have downloaded the older test version. To check:
– Click on the gear icon on the top left of your App’s homescreen and look right above the Help button, the version number of the App should be: 1.0.1.1809- If that is not the version number, then please uninstall and reinstall by clicking on the link below:

Gotta dash and try it out – happy plussing or circling 🙂
