Is it Fate, was it “Written in the stars” ?

Do you believe in Fate? Is It written in the stars?  Has an event ever happened to you that has made you think…. this was fate!
There have been experiences my friends recently that made it seem that maybe our actions are determined ahead of time.

Fate
Even in my own life, events have still occurred even when they were fought against or “against all odds” and I’ve thought that it must be fate.
Fate, an unchangeable course of events, even with opposing circumstances against which it is useless to struggle as it will happen anyway.
Destiny, an inevitable course of events
It was our destiny to meet. Was it?  Or did we make it happen that way ?
People confuse Karma with fate …Karma is not fate, for humans act with free will creating their own destiny.
Karma is created through thoughts, words, actions and even actions we have done under instructions of another.
Many people want to know what our fate or our future holds and we try to find out by using:
  • horoscopes
  • astrology
  • numerology
  • palm readers
  • tarot cards
  • fortune tellers
In fact there are numerous ways that we can try to find out. Much money is made via our insecurities and rush to know the future.
We want answers to questions like,
When will I get married?
Will I meet Mr. right?
How long will our love last?
Will my career be successful?
Possibility most people, like me see these things only as a bit of fun, and its funny if one of them predicts something that turns out right, but truly, that doesn’t happen very often.  Although my cousin @lisaven is still waiting to meet her Greek husband who plays tennis, we often joke about this but its often on her mind since she was foretold this.

If our lives do have a set predetermined route then we would have no need to try, whatever happens, happens we can’t change it.  The theory of cause and effect tells us that this is not true, that everything we do has an effect on our lives.
Fate is romantic. It was fate that we met, on that day we will never forget, awww.  That’s why there are so many books films and songs about it, we want to believe it, its almost a religion in itself, it belongs with mythology.  Was it fate or maybe even Divine intervention?

No, get over it its just a coincidence, we happened to be in the right place at the right time.
When bad things happen, is that also fate?  Is it fate when someone gets ill – no, on that reason alone, I will say that I do not believe in fate. We make our own lives our own decisions and are responsible for our actions and choices.
Why do you believe in fate?
I do like this quote from @iheartquotes

“Meeting you was fate, becoming your friend was a choice, but falling in love with you was beyond my control.”

As if by magic… Shazam!

Shazam®, the world’s leading mobile discovery provider, according to reports, has the world’s biggest mobile music application.

Shazam music recognition already has millions of users over various types of platforms, now also available with added extra’s on the iPad. As its my most used application, (apart from twitter apps) I wanted to rave about it to you.

Today I saw that Shazam will be launching Shazam Encore for Android users to offer a premium service model in addition to the free service with limited options in discovering music on mobile phones. Antonio Wells

http://www.androidtapp.com/shazam-music-discovery-app-goes-premium-launches-shazam-encore/

I have the application on iPhone and I use it all of the time!

Just in case you don’t know what it is, let me explain in real words…

v    You are sitting watching a film, you love the theme tune or a track that is played during the film, so you think you will wait until the credits to see what it is so that you can buy it.  The credits don’t show it …… Fail.

v    You are in the car you hear a track on the radio, you know it but you cannot remember what its called and its really bugging you.  You wait until the end of the song, the DJ doesn’t say what it was …. Fail.

v    You are at a pub/gig/bar a track is playing, you try to remember some of the words so that you can look it up on the internet later, you don’t remember the words ……. Fail.

That was me all the time, I have a terrible memory for names of bands and or tracks, which proves even more difficult.

This is where Shazam music recognition comes in, you hear a track you want – open the application, press tag now, and Shazam immediately brings up an album cover with the Artist and Track names, how clever is that? Brilliant, I love it.

When it comes up with the track, you then have a number of options:

·        iTunes – to buy the track instantly
·        Twitter
·        Facebook
·        send postcard (email)
·        Send Tags as a Tweet to followers; to your Facebook mini-feed or even as a postcard to friends so they can add the Tag to their own collection in Shazam.

·        Location Map

·        Track review

·        Biography

·        Discography

·        YouTube – see a video of the track instantly

And all this is on the free version!!

With the premium version you are not limited the amount of tracks you can tag in a month, so I had to move over to the premium (I didn’t get the free version early when you guys had unlimited).

Shazam Encore exclusive features include:

·        Improved speed performance

·        Music recommendations

·        Find what’s hot and popular

·        Search music

·        Drive and Tag

·        Track the music journey

·        Learn more about the music

·        Personalise Tags

·        Store pending Tags: even when you don’t have a data connection, you can still capture the music moment. The pending Tag can be sent later when you’re back in Wi-Fi or data coverage.

For more info see http://www.shazam.com/iphone

The only thing missing is Lyrics, I’d love that, I’m always looking up lyrics but we cannot get this on Shazam in the UK and yet are apparently are available in the US!

Come on Shazam! Make it even more perfect for me, with Lyrics.

What do you use Shazam on and in what way?

Tagging is a joke

Tagging is a joke

Rant!
Totally of topic here but I feel like a bit of a belated rant.   This has been on my mind for a long time now.

What is all this community service, supervision, and tagging they are handing out in the courts instead of proper sentences?  It doesn’t work! Can’t they see that, are they totally blind!

I’d like to quote a few but maybe that’s not a great thing to do, but you’ve all seen these ridiculous sentences in the news.

Tagging is a joke

I know a lot of it has to with age, but even as a mother I have no sympathy for this, the old saying should stick, “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime”. If they are old enough to go out committing crimes then I am sorry, they are old enough to get the full sentence.

Tagging is a joke

The police work hard to get evidence to get these criminals to court and what does the court do? Slap them on the wrist. Don’t do it again naughty boy/girl.  What a waste of time for the police, and it’s no wonder police cannot find any witnesses, because people know that the offender will be back on the streets the next day and probably come after them next?

These pathetic sentences that are given out now, when certain types of crime are being committed by our teenagers are useless.  Guess what, they do it again and again and again, whilst on bail, probation, tagged, whatever. Then what, oh no! They get more community service. I bet they are so upset. Ha! They have won again!

Community Service

While I imagine that’s pretty annoying for the criminal  (a bit like an itch you can’t reach) if they get community service,  (or have to report to a probation officer).

I’m sure they probably do as little work as possible if they even turn up at all. What do they care, if they don’t turn up they will possibly get fined some piddly amount and not have to do it any more.

I wonder why they think they can get away with committing so many crimes, maybe it’s because they are getting away with it!

Courts/Government need to wake up to the real world. And make a stand against these criminals now, before this gets any worse.   I’m sure they would if they had to live with them.

Twitter and the Big Bang

If you use Twitter at all then I’m sure that you will have noticed all of the outages this week, 3 days of various “site availability issues” they say.  http://status.twitter.com/
We are unsure what that exactly means, apart from the various messages staring at us on the screen, which are mostly over capacity and/or the fail whale, which means…. Google time, or for some… Facebook.

What concerns me is that with Big Brother 11 #BB11 just starting on the box (the final one evidently) and also the World Cup, #WC2010 #worldcup  (with predicted extra tweeters)  that Twitter will not cope.
Talking about coping… will I survive the tweets? haha! Many of the people I follow are BB fans and possibly half of them, football fans!  Hey ho,  they put up with my music weekly so I can’t complain can I?   Just kidding, free will, free tweets. I’m sure I’ll get involved in the chats, if Twitter still works that is.
Its inevitable that people will have more to say about both of these very popular items and that tweets will definitely increase during this time. With Tweets for and against both.   If Twitter can’t cope now with capacity how is it going to manage as from tomorrow?
Or, just maybe is that that Twitter are sorting a fix before it blows up, like the big bang.

Tagging is useless

Find the difference – iphone/itouch app.

Game Review
I just have to tell you about this new iphone application by @Zaam –http://i.zaamit.com/ its called
Find The Difference.
You know the sort of thing, you have two almost identical pictures in which you touch the screen where the difference is.  As soon as I started playing I was addicted, as you have to keep trying until you complete the level or round and some of them are quite challenging.

Levels

Easy – which isn’t timed, so its good to start with this to get used to it.
Medium – which you have 60 seconds to find 4 differences.
Hard – you have to be quick here, and find 5 differences in 30 seconds.
The faster you find the differences, the better score you get, x2 x3 x4 or x5 the score.
There is only one thing that might make it better, penaltys –  if you guess incorrectly as you could just cheat and keep hitting the screen, but what would be the point in that, the fun is in the playing and it is fantastic fun.

Achievements
There are also achievements to be unlocked, which is an excellent touch to the game, as I don’t think similar games have this feature. Here are mine so far, I intend on getting the rest!

All in all its a great game with beautiful photos and what’s more its free!
Today I downloaded an upgrade Level Pack with 30 new pictures, and that was only 59p well worth it!  There is a second Level Pack being put together right now!
Get it for free ….here  and let me know what you think.

The internet is for porn?

Two very bizarre sites have appeared on the internet in the last year. which are both very unsettling; two new ways to get lucky on the internet. They are poorly labelled as Social networking sites or chat forums, which gives Social networking a whole new meaning.

Someone once said that “The internet is for porn”   I feel that these sites are worse than your standard porn sites, they degrade the internet and disgraces us as users. We are worth more than this.

Our own personal privacy obviously isn’t worth anything if this leading networking site is anything to go by – See here.

Is this the future of the internet?  We moan about censorship but so much is unaccounted for.
(check this out by the way you can use it to sort out your privacy settings on facebook)  http://www.reclaimprivacy.org/

Chatroulette

First up is Chatroulette.

You log on with your webcam and you see visions of strangers on your screen and of course they see you.  Then you hit next until you find someone you want to share this experience with. (this is called nexting) As long as you don’t mind nexting through the dirty old men fondling themselves, then this site might be for you. I’d go in with a very open mind if you were to try it.   It doesn’t sound like fun to me.  Yet it seems that millions of people use it. Maybe people do want the internet to be porn?

I can see how this site could appear to be fun.  There are some clips on YouTube that people find hilarious. Yet, however much I love to meet new people online and to learn about different worlds and cultures I wouldn’t choose to sign up for it for even for research purposes, and I am far from prudish.  My friend tried it and described her experience as “lots of old men’s penises flapping about on the screen” which was enough to put me off!

Chatroulette is crude and rude, I don’t believe it was intended this way but it sure has got a lot of interest because of how it has turned out.  Purely because people have just got out of control, they feel they don’t have to be accountable for their actions because they are behind a screen!

Ah..The statistics – Chatroulette  users 71% men, 15% women and 14% perverts, while 83% were fairly young and 17% older people per a trial done by New York film-maker Casey Neistat http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/pda/2010/mar/08/chatroulette  – Its not rocket science.

The Chatroulette site actually states that it, “does not tolerate broadcasting obscene, offending, pornographic material” – oh really? Have they been on their own website at all?  What exactly are they saying constitutes pornographic material, I wonder?

There is a report button, but seriously, if you are visiting the site you should know what to expect.

Gamecrush

And what about Game crush? Virtual prostitution, isn’t it?  Isn’t prostitution illegal in most places in real life?  I know this isn’t real-life but you are selling yourself right?  It’s something else that is demeaning.

Girls paid $30 dollars an hour to “play” with guys; guys that have to “pay” for girls, as they don’t have any real girls to play with. What sort of guys are they?   This is going to attract the kids and the perverts the same as Chatroulette does. You are supposed to be over 18 to play this but kids will get around that, exactly how they got around the over 13 limit on Facebook.

Gamecrush say this about monitoring games which makes you feel safe, NOT.  GameCrush does not monitor, moderate or otherwise control the interaction between its users. GameCrush encourages Players and PlayDates to respect one another while having fun. Encourages!

And if you think you’ll get a playdate that looks like this

Think again – I’d say more like this……..

These so called social networking sites, these games, are perhaps acceptable, if you are over 18, know what to expect and also want a little harmless fun. Although like chicken pox spots these things will start popping up all over the place, for people to scratch, its just the beginning.

Just as we speak, I see a new one has popped up on Facebook!!

Chatville – they say its “Chatroulette without cock” not my words, but we’ll see……. the only difference is people know who you are as your profile comes up. I wonder how many new anonymous accounts  this will encourage, good numbers for Facebook huh?

Do you think I am overeacting? Am I being a kill joy?

How would you feel if  your daughter was on these sites, nexting people or getting paid to “play” with guys?  I suppose in all of this, that is what worries me, that these places are dangerous for our children. In my opinion they are creepy and gross and even though I’m not a psychic I can see the future headlines now.

Love on the Net

We all know the film “You’ve Got Mail”  its one of my favourites – about how two people who fell in love on the internet, although fraught with problems, they lived happily ever after.
What do I know?
That’s what we all want isn’t it – our own happy-ever-after? Well it does seem that you can find it on the internet. I admit that I’m no love guru but I do know a bit about it 🙂  and I also know people who met on the internet and years later are still together, and I have been social networking online for at least 15 years, yes I am that old.
Internet dating
Internet dating sites are more popular now than ever before –  and there is not the taboo about them as their used to be. They seem to be working ok, and are pretty safe. However you don’t really need dating sites, you can meet someone on any of the social networking sites/forums/chat rooms (And I don’t mean Chatroulette that’s another blog).

When you least expect it….

Finding love or friendship for that matter online is the same a finding it in real life, you have to be honest and hope that the person you are talking to is being the same, be yourself, not be someone who you think they want. Its true what they say that  love always comes along when you are not looking for it, and sometimes don’t even want it – I don’t know why – but its true, its happened to me all of my life.
Chill out, don’t be desperate about it, no one likes desperation, forcing yourself on another person will scare them away.  If someone finds you interesting and wants to talk to you they will, if they don’t – its their loss.
Relax, just have fun meeting new people, you won’t find prince charming overnight.

Silly Games, same as in real life, don’t play them, – unless its an Xbox game 🙂

A prod now and then won’t hurt, if maybe they are shy, unsure or even busy, but full blown hassling doesn’t go down well, unless of course you are online friends all ready and they can take a joke, that’s different.
Offline you can experience “love at first sight” – although this is more difficult to find online, “love at first byte” does happen.  Those first words shared as you both open up and find out a bit more about each other, when you feel that fluttery feeling in your stomach and think, yes, I really like him/her – and you can’t wait for that next email, or that next bleep that tells you they are online. What a great feeling, when they message you first.  In fact “love at first byte” is better in my opinion, as its not about appearance, but what is inside.
Fishing?
So its dreamtime, you’ve met someone –  nevertheless, we still have to be clever, remember that if you have a blog or websites on line, he/she may have already done some research and might have lots of information already, for instance they might say “I love fishing, what do you like to do?” You’ll say, “Wow, I love fishing too, its fate!” ha-ha! Great example I felt.
I don’t want to put a downer on internet dating because it can work.  And lets be honest, everything in life is potentially dangerous, so sometimes we just have to take a chance, throw caution to the wind – you do only get one life and you have to live it.

Not really paranoid
On the other hand,  its easy to be deceived and there are a lot of strange people on the internet, you can trust your gut feeling but that can be wrong or you just aren’t sure.
As you get to know them…
  • know where they work
  • know who their friends are
  • maybe even get introduced online with their friends
  • don’t give out your full address
  • talk openly with them on open channels not just privately in an email or chat
  • what do other friends say about them?
  • Be a detective, check them out on Google, yes you heard me. Its not stalking (well it is a bit).
We have to be safe, just to make sure of their identity. You don’t have to mistrust everyone or anyone in fact but get the facts straight. Finally when you are positive about the person,  you might talk on the telephone or Skype.  (I wouldn’t advise giving out your phone number, unless you were certain.) Don’t meet them right away, wait until you are confident, if they are the one they will wait, if they don’t wait then maybe they are a scammer/con-person/rapist/married or they are just not that into you.

Do I sound totally mistrustful? There is a reason why:  One person I know had a bad experience, she met a guy on My Space who said she was the most beautiful woman he had met, best thing since sliced bread, etc etc, he loved her, wanted to come over from America and take  her back with him to live, he was of course a millionaire.  They were talking for ages, exchanging photos, emails, the lot. Anyway he came over to get her (evidently) – and it all turned out to be fake.  Bogus. A big fat liar.  I can’t say anymore but she was safe in the end.
Forgive me, I’m a Pisces (that’s my excuse) – I always see both sides of the story –  The good and the bad  however absolutely wonderful it can be to find love on the internet, and I can get totally carried away with the idea but I do see the other suspicious side too – nevertheless it can and does happen, just be careful out there.
What is your experience, did it work for you, were you conned, or is it just  not happening? It would be great for us to find out more, so please let us know.

Dropbox – A good use of cloud computing.

When @Lucasblack mentioned on Twitter what he was doing with Dropbox I was immediately excited (it doesn’t take much I know) and I downloaded it instantly.

What is Dropbox

In case you don’t know yet, (Its been around since 2007 and I admit that I missed it) Dropbox is a file hosting service which uses cloud computing so that you can store and share files on the internet.
In simple terms, you never have to remember your memory key/stick USB drive again, you just save your files here and have instant access to them where ever you have a Dropbox or access to the internet,  BRILLIANT!

Share and Save files

I have my little blue box on my iphone, my personal PC and a computer at work, and anything I save there I can access and work on right away, also you can share any files you want, you can share them publicly and you can control who can access the shared folders.
Now I have it, I’m not sure how I managed without it.

Keep your files safe

Just say, you’ve put your important files on your USB drive and argh, its lost or broke, and or your PC went down, (it was a bad day!) Log on to another computer and access all of your files still safe and sound in a fluffy white cloud.  Also if you go to a computer where Dropbox isn’t installed you can access your files easily from the web www.dropbox.com.
You are able to sync any type or size of file on Windows, Mac or Linux computers – and it automatically syncs when new files or changes are deleted. I love that when you next go to whatever pc you are using a message comes up telling you that you have new files or changed files.
2gbs of storage is free – you can gain more by inviting friends and other methods or you can pay for up to 100gb’s
What’s more if you or someone else deletes a file by mistake, you can retrieve it for 30 days and Dropbox does a back-up automatically without you doing a thing, magical!
Dropbox now not only have Apple apps (a must for the ipad btw) but apps for Android and Blackberry is coming very soon !
More simply
Okay – after reading this my cousin Lisa still didn’t get it, so I explained it like this, when she wants to work on something at home from work, she emails it to herself and then has to log into her email and downloads it. But with Dropbox all you need to do is save it in the Dropbox and when you get home and turn on your computer it says new file in Dropbox click that and voilà, there it is ready and waiting for you, now Lisa understands, and I hope that you do.

Wikipedia adds this

Power users have devised a number of innovative uses for and mash-ups of the technology that expand Dropbox’ functionality. These include: sending files to a Dropbox viaGmail; using Dropbox to syncIMchat logs; andBitTorrentmanagement.

Dropbox is also a useful tool for password syncing and maintenance, since most people have multiple passwords. The name of the Dropbox folder can be changed using PyDopboxPath, apythonscript.
Dropbox does so much I can’t fit it all here but see this..

Where can I download Dropbox

To download Dropbox go to www.dropbox.com – and click download – and they even give you illustrated instructions on how to install it.
Fantastic, I just love it!

Top Geek Films

Top Geek Films

Due to the rubbish that they drone out of the TV day after day I tend not to bother much with TV and prefer to watch a few DVD’s a week, its a pleasant way to chill away from the PC.

I like to watch comedies or what I have found out to be Geek type films. And even though I mentioned before that I believe myself to be a bit of a Geek, http://bit.ly/cQDM9k I do not like the particular style sci-fi films such as Star Wars and Star Trek, I like sci-fi to contain either, imaginary elements that are largely plausible or clearly not possible, like Monsters Inc  – not somewhere in-between,  I am not too keen on monsters on other planets. (I feel your eyes burning into me already! Sorry, I just don’t like them, oh – or James Bond!)

Anyway,  this all started as a conversation on Twitter recently (like it does) about Geek films and we were sharing our favourites and other tweeters mentioned movies that I’d never seen, forgotten to watch or not realised I’d enjoy, which I will be catching up on shortly.

Here are a few of my best films – I understand that there are probably loads I’ve missed but these spring to mind first – By the way, they are not in any particular order but of course Keanu Reeves has to be up the top there with

Others of my favourites are…

Several people may not categorise some of these as so called “Geek films” but I think you’ll find most Geeks have seen them, even the ones targeted for kids, which are usually great!

It also stands out that most of the films I’ve listed are ancient –  so folks its clear,  I need some new films to watch.

Following our discussion on twitter I realised there are almost certainly masses of great movies that I haven’t seen like, these ones that were mentioned….

Therefore I am left wondering what else have I missed? Do you have any suggestions for me?  Or what are your favourites?
