Vero the new social network that says it’s not going to use ads and that it will be free for the first 1 million people who sign up – has gone a bit viral – and many people are asking How to use Vero.
There has been a lot of noise about Vero on the Internet this week with lots of the top newspapers and websites posting articles and blog post about Vero – This is causing Vero to struggle a bit with demand so bare with it. If you see a message saying server-side service timeout – please try again later – either just leave it and wait – as what you were doing usually pops up – or try later.
Also, many people have downloaded Vero in a panic to not feel left out FOMO not knowing anything about it at all – and so then they don’t know how to use it, I’m seeing tweets on Twitter, saying right now I’ve to Vero and I don’t know how to use it. What does Vero do, what is Vero, I can’t use Vero, I can’t send a picture on Vero, I can’t find my friends of Vero.
So, What is Vero ?
Vero (which means true in Italian) was founded by Ayman Hariri who was frustrated with existing social networks regarding privacy options and data protection. Hariri wanted a social network with no ads, and for it to be funded by a very small subscription. He was fed up with Algorithms which Vero has none and it won’t be mining your data. Vero shares stuff in a similar way, easier for you to share stuff in a safer way and puts stuff back in control of the user.
Hariri who is the son of former assassinated Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri said.
You can post pictures of your family and say where you are and what experiences you are doing without having to worry about being exposed too publicly. But then [when] you do need to give your fans or followers something as part of your job, you can do that and it’s all in the same app.
Interestingly Hariri’s target market isn’t the kids like most social networks – Hariri is aiming for the older user and superhero fans. Zack Snyder director of Justice League, for instance, is a big fan of Vero.
How to use Vero
So most importantly people want to know how to use Vero – well its pretty simple to use, even though there are some differences to other networks it’s pretty intuitive so far.
How do I invite friends on Vero
Once we have an account the first thing we want to do is to invite our friends, now if your friends already have an account you can try to search for them. This is how you can find people and companies to friend and follow depending on their settings. I would suggest you get yourself an original name to start with as mine was given just as Michelle to begin with – but now I’ve put it as MichelleDH which is my Twitter and my Instagram. Hopefully, Michelledh will be easier to find. I do not know if we are going to be able to have our own vanity urls I have asked Vero but no news yet, I guess they are busy right now, but I really hope we can have those.
Otherwise, you can add friends like this:-
- Go to your dashboard
- Tap on the ‘Invite’ icon in the top right hand corner of your screen.
- Your contacts from your phone will appear*. Choose to send an invite by SMS, email, or to your Facebook friends.
- By SMS you can send friend requests individually and by email, you have the option to send multiple requests at a time.
* If you haven’t allowed Vero access to your contacts, you can still send invitations by SMS, Email, Facebook and other options that are available to you. Vero will not access your contacts when sending invitations.
How to accept friends requests on Vero
2. Requests will appear at the top in the Notifications tab (it looks like a bell)
3. Tap accept
4. Tap on the Acquaintances icon to change your new friend’s loop to Friends or Close Friends.
How you categorise your friend is called a Loop – they won’t know what loop you have put them in but it’s all to do with how you share your posts. Similar to facebook – public/friends only/acquaintances
On Vero, you have Close Friends – Friends – Acquaintances.
Close Friends for sharing personal moments, Friends for more social moments, and Acquaintances for big, public moments you want to broadcast.

How to leave / delete Vero
People are panicking that it’s a bit difficult to leave Vero – well it’s not really. You could just delete the app, especially if you haven’t even used it or put any information on it, don’t be a drama queen.
- Go to your dashboard
- Tap on the ? at the top left
- In the drop down – find – delete my account
- Provide feedback (if you wish)
- Tap Submit
People say that after this stage to delete your Vero account you send an email and have to wait for them to accept, I’ve not gone that far but well big deal – it might take a while at the moment as they just have 500,000 people sign up in one go – you were probably one of them so cut them some slack.

The great variety of mobiles and their endless combinations and possibilities can make the process of choosing a mobile phone tedious and complicated, especially when you need to decide how to choose a mobile phone for a preteen. In order to help you make the right choice, here in this article today, we have compiled a list of characteristics that a mobile phone for kids should have.
How to choose a mobile phone for a preteen
Characteristics of a mobile phone for the preteen
1. Quick dial menu for frequent numbers and an SOS button connected with emergency assistance services. There are already available on many phones in the market, these have the option of consecutively calling five predetermined telephone numbers until one of them responds.
2. Direct access button to messages and frequent contacts menu.
3. High call volume and conversation, or compatibility with hearing aids.
4. An adjustable screen so that it is possible to enlarge it until it adapts to the needs of the user.
5. Precision pencil or pointer for easy writing for smartphones with touchscreens that have no buttons.
6. The casing should be fall proof and the screen protected and resistant, or you can buy a protective cover.
Smartphone security for preteens
Add a layer of security to device:
Along with these characteristics, make sure that you put parental controls on their smartphones before handling it to the preteens. There are many options available in the market for parental control apps, but an upto date and most preferred by the majority of parents is FamilyTime parental control. Having this app in hand, parents can stay in the know of their kids’ digital conduct as well as their movements in the real world. With this app parents can view contact, SMS threads, call logs, applications, app preferences, the frequency of using a particular app, web history and much more.
Along with these monitoring features, the app offers parental controls for example, with the app, parents can watchlist contacts, block unwanted or inappropriate apps, schedule auto screen locks and remotely lock devices, etc. In case of phone loss, parents can also track the location and disable the device to protect the data in it. Aren’t all these great features? These certainly are, and I think essential if your kids are going to have mobile phones. So, what are you waiting for? Get the app now and before giving your preteen their first device, install your parental controls on it. You can get the trial version of the FamilyTime app with premium features from the Google Play store and iTunes. So, visit the app store to download the FamilyTime app.
In general, we usually suggest to buy phones direct from operating companies, but this is not the only option. If you want a specific device that is not available in the stores, you can search for it online to buy or use specialised mobile or telephone shops. In both cases, you can acquire the device and then get the tariff that best suits you with the mobile network operator of your choice, although previously you will have to make sure that the mobile is free, that is, that it works with any network. We hope that helps you decide how to choose a mobile phone for a preteen.
I just wanted to tell you about StartUp Dash – the free mobile game that teaches kids how to be an entrepreneur as it is such a brilliant idea. The game which is an Action Adventure Runner was created by Julian Hall from Ultra Gaming Ltd who has the vision to help 10 Million kids age 7-18 by 2020 amplify the idea of “Entrepreneurship”. I just realised that haven’t written about a mobile game for some time, in fact, Stubies might have been the last one!
This game is a bit different however, it’s not just a game, it a game that is set to inspire and teach business to the next generation of entrepreneurs and leaders through gaming fun. It is really just for kids but us adults are having great fun with it too.
Mobile gaming a fantastic way to reach people, with over 2.1 billion mobile gamers in the world and kids spending over 2 hours per day playing games on their phones, I can see this being very popular, learn and play at the same time, there should really be more games like this. They don’t even know they are learning. 🙂
StartUp Dash – How to be an entrepreneur
Entrepreneur Eddie is a guy with an idea, in fact Eddie has a tonne of ideas, but can he turn his ideas into a business and start-up his company?
Help Entrepreneur Eddie and Pandora Profit dash along a perilous road filled with obstacles and hidden pitfalls. They have to collect as many good ideas as possible to make their start-up business successful.
Start-Up Dash is a fast paced action adventure runner which will make you use all your speed and reflexes to decide when accelerate your startup, shoot sales targets and exit when you decide to sell your company.
So, let’s take a look at StartUp Dash – The game is free but it does offer In-App Purchases, so make sure your kid doesn’t have access to buying powerups without your knowledge.
You need to make sure you have the Game centre on iOS as I didn’t and I couldn’t see the leader-board.
When you first click on the icon, the game starts up and it says “Looking for good ideas” on the load bar, love that touch!
When it’s done loading you are presented with Entrepreneur Eddie to play with
In the top left of this screen, you can see that there are other characters to unlock with in-game cash called Dash Money which you earn there is Pandora Profits and coming soon The Ultra Kid – which I think these kids were modelled on Julian’s own kids, who love the game.
The next icon you can see is Stats – which show you your own stats in the game and then a button at the bottom shows the high scores.
Then the Dictionary – which is a great touch too – which has all of the meaning of business words that might come up that the kids might be unsure about.
The last button at the top is Power-ups – you can buy power-ups with in-game cash, to help with your marketing, ideas, products, and speed boosts.
The bottom buttons are…
Sounds – Turn on and Off
Shop – Where you can buy Dash Money
Music – Turn on and Off
Right now you know all the buttons you can get going with your Start-Up and learning how to be an entrepreneur by racing!
To get started racing you simply touch the screen – as you are running down the screen you will come across obstacles that you need to jump, dodge or run through, and you will get messages come up on the screen as you do so.
You will see targets that you need to hit with your arrow by tapping the screen – if you hit it – that’s your sales target hit!
You will see red lights – which are bad ideas – if you don’t dodge these by swiping left or right or up to jump over them, your business will fail but don’t worry, try again.
You will see yellow lights which are good ideas run through as many as these as possible for extra points.
and you will see big FAIL signs to dodge and competitors too, which at this early stage in your business you do not want to come head to head with so you need to dodge those too.
If you fail or crash you can keep your profits, sell your startup, continue with coins or try again – the message is DON’T GIVE UP< TRY AGAIN – love it.
Take a look at the youtube video for in-game action.
I think that’s enough without giving out spoilers to tell you about StartUp Dash – the free mobile game that teaches how to be an entrepreneur.
Its free so go and download it to find out the rest, there is so much more in it as you grow your start up.
Each and every download and share will help me to achieve our goal of helping 10M young people by 2020!

Instagram has made some changes to their API and today Instagram introduces scheduling posts. You can now officially schedule and publish on Instagram, but whats the catch? The catch is we can only use Facebook Marketing Partners or Instagram Partners to schedule and post. And you do have to have an Instagram business account, plus you have to log in with Facebook so several catches actually.
Businesses will also now be required to use Facebook Login when giving permission to third-party tools to utilize these features. For those who wish to continue using their existing API tools, they will still be able to do so but will be unable to access any of the new features as a result.
Schedule and publish on Instagram now
HootSuite is one of the biggest social media management platforms and they are partners at Instagram. HootSuite announced today before anyone else that they are able to schedule and publish on Instagram through their Hootsuite dashboard.
“Scheduling and publishing of Instagram content has been the number one request for our 16 million customers,” said Ryan Holmes, CEO of HootSuite “Now, they can manage large volumes of content, multiple team members, and multiple Instagram accounts with ease and security. Hootsuite is excited to launch our new integration with Instagram to help our customers achieve their business goals and succeed with social.”
Quote from a news release about the update on Hootsuite on GlobeNewswire
However, it’s still very exciting, for us social media marketers who were jumping for joy that we can schedule and publish on Instagram, we are easily pleased. We have been waiting for this for a long time, but there are some hurdles to overcome.
What is the catch
As we know Instagram is becoming more and more popular so more businesses are clambering to get on the visual social network. (If you are still asking Why do I need to be on Instagram read that post.) I was wondering what the cost is going to end up being, are you going to have to pay for a business account soon? And can we only use approved apps to do this? Then I realised that you probably have to pay for HootSuite to use this feature, so I popped over to find out. No, it seems you can include your Instagram in the 3 networks limit, but for more, you have to pay. Whether or not you can have 3 free Instagram accounts, I will have to find out. That might be a bit more tricky, being as you have to sign up with Facebook, so it might not be all roses for marketers.
We still have lots of questions that need answers.
What about Buffer
I personally love Buffer, for scheduling – I’ve asked them if they will be adding the ability to schedule and publish on Instagram, and I’ve not seen any comments from them. I assume they are not an Instagram Partner and still might not be able to schedule and post. You can schedule with them right now, and you get an alert to publish it from your phone. Which at first was a pain but it actually works pretty well.
UPDATE – Good News Buffer have said they are beta testing this feature before it rolls out to everyone, so watch this space. Buffer also said that they are exploring the Partner aspect right now. I was using my @techieminx account rather than my @michelledh account – just in case you were wondering.
However, on Hootsuite they said that the new features will roll out today for all Hootsuite customers who have an Instagram businesses profile.
How to an Instagram account to HootSuite
Through the HootSuite web dashboard:
Click on your Profile Icon in the launch menu
Click Add a Social Network.
Select Instagram and press Connect with Instagram.
Enter your password and authorize Hootsuite to access your account.
Pick the Tab you want to work with and select Add Stream. Choose Instagram from your list of connected social networks and select your Instagram profile.
Create Instagram streams for your own posts, scheduled posts, hashtags, users, locations, and more.
All that said, I couldn’t actually get it to work on HootSuite it said timestamp wrong…
I checked everywhere and it still came up with the error – I will revisit this tomorrow and update my findings.

What does it mean this Rollup
Once a day you get a Rollup email which is easy to view scroll down in a list of all your subbed websites in categories. At the moment you can’t change the categories but I believe this is something they are working on. You can also look at your Rollup folder anytime you like, its all stored there for when you need it. When you sign up to new websites you will get an email saying you have some more subscriptions to sort out, and again you get a list which asks you if you want to keep, unsubscribe or rollup the email, you just tick the one you want and instantly it’s done. You see, its never been easier to Clean up your Inbox with UnRoll Me.

This really has to be the best update on Instagram yet, you can now follow hashtags Yesterday on the 12th of December Instagram introduced the ability to follow hashtags. I thought you might like to know How to Follow Hashtags on Instagram as people always say that I explain it better.
I’m very excited about this update, now we won’t have to go searching for the hashtags you want to see, and to remember the certain ones, you can just follow them and they will appear in your feed. This is going to make it so much simpler way to grow a community. And for your own smaller hashtags to be on top of who is tweeting them the whole time.
When you first click on a hashtag you will see this message…
How to Follow Hashtags on Instagram
Yes, following hashtags will make them appear in your feed, its just like you would follow a friend on Instagram.
Its simple, all you have to do is click on a hashtag that you want to follow, and it will take you to the hashtag page, where you can then click follow.
You’ll then start to see the top posts from that hashtag appear in your feed. You will also start to see those hashtag related stories first too.
If it all gets too much, you can always just simply unfollow again. Just click unfollow and it will ask you if you are sure.
Another feature that has become available through following hashtags is that you can now see what hashtags your friends follow.
Its pretty simple but I hope that helps you learn How to Follow Hashtags on Instagram
We love Instagram – please do follow me there @michelledh I do not post promotional posts there it’s just for fun, I post generally about my hobbies, #mandalas #food #art, although sometimes I do mention my Etsy site MichelleHarrisStudio , where I have started to sell my art after everyone suggested that I do, give me a thumbs up over there if you take a visit!
Happy Instagramming 🙂
Facebook has just introduced Messenger Kids, a new app for kids … and families to connect. I was a bit dubious about this at first but parents do have a lot of control and it doesn’t give your kid a facebook account, you still have to be over 13 for that. I thought it might be helpful to bypass all the fluff about it and just show you How do Parents set up Facebooks New Messenger Kids.
Just quickly though…
What is Facebooks New Messenger Kids
Firstly its a new Facebook messenger app just for kids which controlled via a parents Facebook account, so unlikely to be hacked. Unless the kids know your password, which I’m sure some kids do know their parents passwords. Maybe this will help. I’m sure every safety feature you can think of has been added after Youtube has been forced to toughen up its rules to protect families.
Today, parents are increasingly allowing their children to use tablets and smartphones, but often have questions and concerns about how their kids use them and which apps are appropriate. So when we heard about the need for better apps directly from parents during research and conversations with parents, we knew we needed to develop it alongside the people who were going to use it, as well as experts who could help guide our thinking.
So, once its set up your kids can video chat with parent-approved contacts – using emojis, sound effects and playful masks. Your kids can always send photos, videos and text messages to approved friends and relatives. Who will receive these messages via the normal messenger.
How do Parents set up Facebooks New Messenger Kids
Every child account on Messenger Kids must be set up by a parent. For parents, setting your child up with a Messenger Kids account is done in four steps:
- Download: First, download the Messenger Kids app on your child’s iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone from the App Store. Or here > Messenger Kids
- Authenticate: Then, authenticate your child’s device using your own Facebook username and password. This will not create a Facebook account for your child or give them access to your Facebook account.
- Create an account: Finish the setup process by creating an account for your child, where all you’ll need to do is provide their name. Then the device can be handed over to the child so they can start chatting with the family and friends you approve.
- Add contacts: To add people to your child’s approved contact list, go to the Messenger Kids parental controls panel in your main Facebook app. To get there, click on “More” on the bottom right corner in your main Facebook app, and click “Messenger Kids” in the Explore section.
You’ll be pleased to know that Messenger Kids has no ads and no in-app purchases. Oh and its only out in the US right now….
What do you think about this new app, will you be letting your kids on it…
Video on our Facebook profile picture has been with us for a while but since I added a goofy video to my Facebook profile, people have been amazed this was available so I thought I’d quickly tell you How to add a 7 second looping video as your profile picture on Facebook.
In 2015 Facebook started rolling out video Facebook pictures, it was actually at the same time that we were able to pin featured photos at the top of our profiles and have temporary profile pics. This was surprisingly also around the time that Snapchat added profile GIFs not that Facebook every copies anyone.
I think video profile pictures are really funky idea, its fun and it gets people to see the real you – its harder to fake a video, well I know you can but it takes a little more effort.
So lets get right to it, its so simple you will have wondered why you never did it before.
How to add a 7 second looping video as your profile picture on Facebook
First of all, you need to create a video selfie, well I guess it could be of anything, but its better for any social media network if your profile picture is of your and not some famous person or dog. People connect with real people, but that’s another blog post.
You don’t need to worry about looping it, Facebook does that for you.
To add your video from iPhone
- Go to your profile and tap your profile picture or video – EDIT
- Tap Take a New Profile Video
- Select Profile Video to choose your video on your phone
- You can actually record now or select a video already on your phone
- Tap Use
- Go to your profile and tap your profile picture or video
- Tap Take a New Profile Video
- Select Profile Video to choose a video on your phone
- Tap Next, then tap the bar at the bottom of the screen to choose a thumbnail for your video
- Tap Use
And its done, the video will now appear as your profile picture – it will also appear in your news feed and on your profile page, I always like to remove these by clicking the 3 dots in the top left – hide from timeline.
Be warned though that Video profile pictures are ALWAYS public – they cannot be friends only or restricted in any way.
If you liked our post – How to add a 7 second looping video as your profile picture on Facebook – give us a like or a share please, and post your links below so that we can see your videos.
And add me on Facebook too 🙂

To watch age-restricted videos on YouTube, you must be signed in and have indicated on your profile that you are of legal age to view mature content. So if you are not logged this means that ideally, you cannot view videos that are age-restricted. The problem is that first, very young children and families often watch on a logged in trusting parents account or that some videos which are supposed to be family friendly are actually not and these are slipping through the net. (Pun intended) These videos are free for all to see and they are not suitable for kids, some are horrific with millions of views. So, it’s about time that YouTube toughens rules to protect families and kids.
All this comes after many attacks aimed Google who own YouTube that the site isn’t safe for kids and in fact exploiting them. BuzzFeed even provided Youtube with dozens of examples of videos.
Google has started the cleanup and boy do they need one – how many sites are there like the YouTube Channel Toy Freaks which was terminated by Youtube last week – which had a lot of dodgy content aimed at kids, which most parents called creepy and abusive but still had 8.5 Million subscribers.
Age Restrictions on Accounts
Like every social network, YouTube has age restrictions for you have an account. You have to be 18 to open an account but with parents consent, you can sign up for an account as young as 13, but this just isn’t enough, you can skirt around these restrictions easily. When you had to sign up with Google+ to youtube there was an outcry because people didn’t want to have to use their own names…
Its always been the case that videos may be randomly reviewed and then have an age restriction slapped on them, or the content might be taken down completely or just muted, but these videos might not have even violated YouTube rules. But it must be pretty hard to spot, to be fair, unless someone complains about the video, even with all the bots and staff they have looking out for this stuff.
With these YouTube Stats, you can understand the problem is HUGE
- The total number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000.
- 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!
- Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day.
Users often try to pass content off as family friendly when it’s clearly not – I guess this is to get more views, without a care if a 3-year-old might stumble upon it.
Content is not classed as family friendly if it has
- Vulgar language
- Violence and disturbing imagery
- Nudity and sexually suggestive content
- Portrayal of harmful or dangerous activities
YouTube toughens rules to protect families and kids
However, these new guidelines are tougher than before > Youtube say in the GoogleBlog
In the last couple of weeks we expanded our enforcement guidelines around removing content featuring minors that may be endangering a child, even if that was not the uploader’s intent. In the last week we terminated over 50 channels and have removed thousands of videos under these guidelines, and we will continue to work quickly to remove more every day.
Some content will now be labelled at only over 18 and you will have to be logged in to watch.
They will be removing any ads that are used which are inappropriate and are targetting families. They will also be blocking inappropriate comments on videos featuring minors.
On the other side of the coin, they also need to remove some content which, younger or more immature users are posting.
There will also be more guidance available for those to do want to help make youtube a more family-friendly environment.
Johanna Wright, Vice President of Product Management at YouTube said
Across the board we have scaled up resources to ensure that thousands of people are working around the clock to monitor, review and make the right decisions across our ads and content policies. These latest enforcement changes will take shape over the weeks and months ahead as we work to tackle this evolving challenge. We’re wholly committed to addressing these issues and will continue to invest the engineering and human resources needed to get it right. As a parent and as a leader in this organization, I’m determined that we do.
