Google has a new Social Network Called Shoelace

When I heard the news that Google has a new Social Network Called Shoelace, I was very excited!  Obviously as working as a Social media manager and Community manager, I love community building and I love social networks, so I looked into it a bit more.  So, Google has something called Area 120, its a workshop working on Google’s experimental products.  And currently there is a small team there working on a new social networking app called Shoelace. You’d think they might have realised by now that they just don’t do well at social networks, well actually to be fair,  I think they do but they just give up on them.  Platforms cannot run themselves, new users need lots of help, lots of guidance and lots of real support (not bots)

Google has a new Social Network Called Shoelace

Firstly what amuses me is that the website is Shoelace.NYC  (because I guess they are testing it in New York City to begin with) but there is a which at first glance could be mistaken for a social network.  haha – I bet they are getting lots of views and enquiries.

What is Googles Shoelace?

Shoelace connects people through shared interests and local activities. Great for users who have recently moved cities or who are looking to meet others who live nearby.  As I mentioned before its only in NYC right now but they want to take it worldwide

Shoelace are very serious about privacy though they realise that people don’t want to share their actual locality very easily.  So when you ask to join a community you will often need to give verification to make sure that the right people are allowed in.  There are strict rules about standards, profiles and loops.

What are Loops

Loops are the activies you can join on Shoelace … named this because it helps to tie people together based on interests.

22 Whatsapp Expert Tips and Sneaky Tricks

Whatsapp tips and tricks for group chats mainly but some of these will be applicable for normal chats too.

Following the success of our last post about Whatsapp tips and tricks and everyone saying they wanted more I thought it was time to write another post.  There are so many tricks and so many versions but iOS and Android are mostly the same – just sometimes worded differently so I’ve tried to include some of the Android stuff.  On Whatsapp web just replace Tap for Click and of course, there is no holding down but there is an arrow there instead on PC.

You can’t do everything that you can on the mobile app to Whatsapp web but many things are similar.  Any questions please just ask. Here or find me on Twitter @michelledh

I’m not a fan of this one, as I think you have to be careful not to end up being a spammer.  However, sometimes you might want to invite people to an event.   The good thing is the recipient has to have you in their own address book (contacts) to receive the message.

When you want to help but don’t know how

When you want to help but don’t know how – Kindness in a box

Cancer, the dreaded C word – the other one.  When it happens to us, of course, it’s a huge shock.  Why me!  Cancer is something that happens to someone else!  No one wants to take that journey in life.  But once we find out about it there is no going back, we have to tackle it head-on.  The only save here is that we did find out, so now we have a chance to Kick Cancer from our lives.  It’s also difficult for family and friends who feel helpless and who want to help but they don’t know how – Cancer, its such a big shock for all.

Since an early age, my life has been affected in some way by cancer. From the age of 15, I dealt with it day in and day out from when mum was diagnosed. It came and went and came and went – for 15 years.  I remember then, how friends and relatives felt.  People wanted to help, to offer some assistance, to say that they are there if they are needed, to show some support but they really didn’t know how.

Cancer Gift Parcel

Now as I am older, I have friends with Cancer as sadly most of us do, and so when Dr. Shara Cohen reached out to me on Linkedin to ask if she could send me a Cancer Gift Parcel in return for a Blog Review about their new business Cancer Care Parcels to help people, help others.  I thought wow!  What a great idea. Of course, I would love to assist in getting the word out, especially when I have friends who would really benefit from these Parcels.

I’ve always supported Cancer charities because without us they wouldn’t be able to do all they do. They do amazing things. Like the Teenage Cancer Trust, how wonderful at they.  The Teenage cancer trust  make sure teens get the specialist care and support that they need, at this time – and they are struggling to keep up.  Although this isn’t a charity, I really feel it can make someone with Cancer feel loved, special and cared for which is really important.   I’m just so impressed at the kindness involved in every package.

Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life.” – Jackie Chan

When you want to help but don’t know how

When you want to help but don’t know how

Having a look at the site I was taken aback at huge range and specificity all the lovely gift parcels you can get for people.  The parcels contain specific items for specific reasons, for instance, the Chemo Patient comfort gift pack which I was sent, has all things to help with the sickness and keeping you hydrated and comfortable and entertained.

For start, there are gifts for

    • Adult Cancer
    • Teenage Cancer
    • Childhood Cancer

And then within those ranges are different scenarios – you can even shop by stage or treatment and even by common cancers.

  •  Chemo Care
  • Chemo Survivor
  • Radiotherapy
  • Comfort packages
  • Hospital packages
  • Pink packages
  • Duleux
  • Luxurious
  • Breast Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • For Men/Boys
  • For Women/girls

and it goes on.. so easy to find what you want or what your friend/relative/neighbour might need or just to feel good about.

When you want to help but don’t know how

Cancercareparcels say

All our gifts are thoughtfully put together.  We liaise with our advisory board, which consists of past cancer patients and those receiving our parcels for their feedback and suggestions.  We carefully construct each box so that you can feel secure that your gift will be welcome.

So Where did the idea for Cancer Care Parcel come from

After Dr Shara Cohen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 she found there was very little time to just relax, take it all in and give herself ‘me’ time. With all the appointments, liaising with work, telling the people who needed to be told…… there was little time to digest what was happening, research the practicalities or to just relax.. So she set up Cancer Care Parcel, to enable children and adults with cancer to take some of the worries away and bring some calm back into their lives.

Dr Shara told me, “I sold my company Euroscicon after my cancer diagnosis as I couldn’t keep up with the work.  I then set up Cancer Care Parcel.  Its still in its very early stages, (they aren’t making any money yet).  We gift alot to charities too.”

A Cancer Care Parcel is an ideal gift, to let people with cancer know that you are thinking of them.

Some of the packages can seem expensive, especially the smaller packages. Which you’d be looking at if you don’t have much spare cash around.  However, it depends on how you look at it. If you DID know what you needed to buy and you knew where to get it from you could probably make up a package from various shops.  And then put it all together and it might be cheaper than these Cancer Care Packages. However, the thing is, we don’t know the best things to buy or where to get them and these come in a lovely box, delivered to the door, causing less worry and stress.

When you want to help but don’t know how

There’s so much in it!

That all said, I do still think it’s a superb idea, who wouldn’t want to have one of these delivered, it feels like kindness in a box at a time you most need it.

When you want to help but don’t know how – Cancer Sucks and now you know how to help, with a little kindness in a box.

The top five hacked passwords and how not to get hacked

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of GCHQ, and Department for Digital, Media and Sport (DCMS) carried out their first UK Cyber Survey – in which the findings were shocking.
Its total proof that we have no idea about cybersecurity and how to protect ourselves online.  You just won’t believe the top five hacked passwords in the last year, it’s truly embarrassing.

It seems that people really do need help with protecting themselves online.

The results are from the top 100k hacked password list and survey taken of 1,350 UK residents aged 16+ was undertaken from 12
November 2018 to 9 January 2019. The data have been weighted to be statistically representative of the UK adult population.

The top five hacked passwords

Wait for it…….

Next used by 7.7m is – 123456789

3.8million people use – qwerty

3.1million people use – 1111111

No one would ever use those, would they?  Did you?

Other most commonly hacked passwords contain names, football teams and other random words or numbers.

  • qwerty
  • password
  • abc123
  • password1
  • 000000
  • iloveyou
  • 1234
  • 7777777
  • fuckyou
  • 112233
  • asdfghjkl
  • 123123123
  • computer
  • princess

These are the craziest passwords you could ever choose. If you have anything like these you should change it now – no not tomorrow, right now.

The NCSC suggest now that you should use a password with 3 memorable words and it wouldn’t hurt to put some numbers and other characters in there too.

The top five hacked passwords and how not to get hacked

Change passwords often

Considering how many platforms get hacked and all of the data breaches that we have these days, it’s also advisable to change your passwords often.  AND never use the same password twice.

Thanks to the NCSC and Troy Hunt – they have made available the top 100,000 passwords from Troys Have I been Pwned Password list

You can check if your password is on here, but I think you now get the gist.

Are people protecting themselves from getting hacked or scammed?

Only 15% of people said they knew how to protect themselves online.
Around half of the people researched said that they were confused about how to be secure online.
Less than half do not always use a strong, separate password for their main email account.

So we have some work to do here to help people be safe online.

Here are a few bits of advice that you might need to be aware of when online.

1 – Avoid ratting – A rat is a remote access trojan, that can be used to obtain private information or spy on you.

a) Download updates when prompted these often include security fixes.

b) Take care what links you click on in emails, never change your password via a link in an email. In other words, make sure you go directly to the site.

c) Cover your webcam when not in use.

d) Only download programs or apps from trusted sources.

2 – Be aware of Smishing – SMS phishing – is when you get a text message from someone you trust but it’s a criminal impersonating them.  In addition, the number can even be the same number.

a) They will usually tell you there is a problem of some kind and they need you to validate your account.

b ) It could be the bank, your service provider, Apple, Google, Paypal, a delivery service delivering a parcel or even the HMRC.

c) Don’t click links in the message unless you are 100% certain – Do not respond – Do check the authenticity of the sender.

3 – Be aware of Webcam Blackmails – This can either be where you are lured into taking off some clothes and it’s recorded, or they pretend they have some content on you that they are going to share with all of your contacts.

a) Do not respond but report them. Therefore if you follow this advice and you keep your cam covered up already, you won’t even be concerned that this could be a scam.

4 – Always use Two-Step Verification when offered

An introduction to Biohacking for Entrepreneurs

We all want to be healthier, fitter and stronger?  It’s obsessive, it’s our new dopamine!   Many Entrepreneurs and small business owners I know are jumping on the bandwagon of getting up at 5 am to meditate or to go jogging with their smartwatches to check heart rates and calories consumed.  I love working with small businesses and entrepreneurs achieve their goals and if looking after themselves is going to be a part of that maybe these tips in my An introduction to Biohacking for Entrepreneurs will help us all.

It’s no surprise that Biohacking has become more popular, especially with Entrepreneurs.  Entrepreneurs are Risk-takers, they are disciplined they are persistent and resourceful Biohacking was made for them.

Yes, Biohacking has been around for years but it has gained recognition over the last year because more and more people are wanting a quick fix to enhance their physical and mental health.

So for Entrepreneurs this system is a dream comes true, they motivated and have a constant desire to improve themselves, they want to win and be the best.  With Biohacks they can double their output and improve their efficiency, and still come home to play games with their children.

What is Biohacking?

You might be thinking, hacking? Like computer hacking, hackers who steal money and ruin businesses, this doesn’t sound like a good thing.   Well, think more life hacks, the hacks that show us how to peel a potato in an unthinkable effortless way – saving us lots of time.    Biohacking is more like that but using art and science to hack into your biology to achieve ultimate results with minimal effort! That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy you still have to put your mind to it and be consistent with it.  But there are some simple and smart hacks.

Biohacking used to be more about using gadgets to hack the bodies systems but the popular form is simpler and natural.

What are the different types of Biohacking?

The most popular types are

This one is all about the food you put in your body and how it interacts with your genes.  Nutrigenomics is the study of how different nutrients affect us.

We have been learning for some time that we need to put more healthy foods into our body, that fast foods and fatty foods are not good for us.  Just by making small changes about what we eat can make us feel more energized, and be more productive.

DIY biology (do it yourself)

These scientists are studying biology and life science usually has labs and equipment to do testing.

You can even do DIT biology at home without any equipment like extracting your own DNA using your saliva a toothpick.

This type that uses gadgets, implants injections to improve the body.  It’s like the hardware they create or use to upgrade their body to 2.01 using body modification.

It might sound crazy and farfetched and it’s true some people do want to turn themselves into Borgs or the next Superman.

But some of this stuff is happening already – You have probably heard businesses chipping their employees so they can access their buildings or the people who have inserted microchips inside their bodies so they can be used as contactless credit cards or railcards.

An introduction to Biohacking for Entrepreneurs

We aren’t going to show you any of the more extreme technical biohacks, or the modifications you can make to your body but we are going to show you 9 Ways to Biohack your body the simpler way

An introduction to Biohacking for Entrepreneurs

Let’s start with what you put in your body – or what you don’t…

Intermittent Fasting

This hack is becoming increasingly popular for the last few years.  People are using it as a way of biohacking the body to lose weight, prevent disease and to live longer.

Intermittent fasting is controlling when you are eating and when you are not.

The most popular way involves 16 or 24-hour fasts, two times a week.

The 16-hour method – means that you only east between 1-9pm.    This is the most popular method because it’s the easiest to stick to and you are really only missing out on breakfast and maybe some snacks!

The 24-hour method – is just that – you do not eat for 24hours.

If you want to be a little easier on yourself, just eat dinner early and have breakfast late.

During fasting times you can drink water, coffee and other non-caloric drinks and when you do eat, make sure you have something really healthy.

Fasting like this has been proven to when you fast, human growth hormone levels go up and insulin levels go down. Your body’s cells also change the expression of genes and initiate important cellular repair processes.

The Elimination Diet

If you are not keen on the fasting – and you have some allergies or other problems with digestion you should try the elevation diet.

It’s just that eliminating various foods from your diet for a period of time, usually two weeks.  Don’t remove more than one or two foods from your diet so that you can keep track of it.

Then after the two weeks when you bring the food back check for any allergic symptoms that start to appear.

These might be

  • Tingling or itching in the mouth.
  • Hives, itching or eczema.
  • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body.
  • Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing.
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting.
  • Dizziness, light-headedness or fainting.

Plant-Based Diet

Biohacking nutrition

Think about what you eat, how much of what you put in your body is processed or high in carbs, sugar and fat and we wonder why we are sluggish?

A whole food, a plant-based diet is a super Biohack for great health!

Not only will you feel fitter, younger, but you’ll also have a lower risk of obesity and many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, inflammation and cancer.

Replace the meat, eggs, dairy, fats and processed foods in your diet with organic, nutrient dense foods – fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Eating these types of food will

  • Boost the immune system
  • Fight obesity
  • Improve good bacteria in the gut
  • Improve mental focus
  • Increase Energy

Check this beginner’s guide to starting a plant-based diet.

And you’ll also be saving the planet!

Biohacking  your Sleep

We all need about 7-9 hours’ sleep per night – and if you aren’t getting that this can affect your weight loss, your mood and your health.

Getting enough sleep is about one of the best things we can do for our health and optimal performance.

Getting a good night sleep has a number of benefits:

  • Improves brain function
  • Helps you live longer
  • Balances your hormones
  • Is good for your heart.
  • Helps you lose weightThere are lots of disagreements about when is the best to sleep but its seems bedtime needs to be between 8 pm and 12 am

Biohacking your sleep might sound easy to the good sleeper but for some of us, it’s hard to get to sleep or to stay asleep and then there is that time we wake up – when it’s too early to get up but too late to go back to sleep.  It just needs practice, commitment and some …

  1. Don’t drink too much of anything before bedtime
  2. Limit or avoid alcohol
  3. Don’t take your phone to bed
  4. Avoid Blue lights from Devices before bed
  5. Get some exercise during the day
  6. Use a journal to write down your problems if they are stopping you sleep.
  7. Track a snack before bed (if you aren’t fasting!)
  8. Sleep on your side – new research shows that toxins are flushed from the brain through lymphatic vessels in the brain, called glymphatics more so when you sleep on your side.

Practising mindful breathing

Hack your nervous system by controlled breathing.

When we breathe normally we absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide with the movement of the lungs, we do this magic trick without even thinking about it.  Which is very useful  of course but sometimes we do it wrong.

Yes, when we are stressed or under pressure, we do not breathe properly and our shallow over-breathing can just make things worse.

When we are mindful about our breathing we relax, we breathe in slowly through the nose and out through the mouth and we are calm.

Controlled breathing  technique differs a bit from expert to expert  but they usually include

  • Inhaling deeply through the nose for a count of five or so,
  • Holding the breath for a moment
  • Exhaling completely through the mouth for a count longer than the inhalation.

There is also a breathing hack for falling asleep.

The  4 -7 -8  method

Exhale completely through your mouth

  • Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
  • Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  • Exhale completely through your mouth to a count of eight.
  • Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths

Controlled breathing has many benefits apart from managing stress and anxiety

Such as

  • Lowering Blood Pressure and Heart Rate
  • Encouraging Brain Growth
  • Helps with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
  • Improves core muscle stability

Get some sunlight each day

It’s a fact that none of us get enough sunlight during winter months especially without sunlight our serotonin levels can dip causing depression.

Our bodies’ produce vitamin D when we are exposed to the sun, which has some very important functions for the body.   Even though some of us take vitamin D supplements otherwise called the Sunshine vitamin its still important to make sure we get outside into the sunlight, and also get some fresh air

Sunlight is good for

  • Strong bones
  • Cancer prevention
  • Better skin
  • A good night sleep
  • Mood
  • Lowers Blood pressure
  • Strengthens teeth
  • Supports the immune system
  • Lowers Cholesterol
  • Increase oxygen content in our blood

Of course, we are not saying that you need to go out and sunbathe in the hot sun, there is still the need to be protected from the harmful hot rays of the sun.

Exposure to the sun should be done slowly and carefully.

Healthline says that we should aim to get 10-30 mins of naturally midday sunlight several times a week.

Midday is the best time to get vitamin D, as the sun is at its highest point and your body may manufacture it most efficiently around that time of day. This means you may need less time in the sunlight at midday.

Because of the way your brain works, the pursuit of gratitude and compassion will make you happier than the pursuit of happiness itself.” – Dr Amit Sood, from the Mayo Clinic

We should all be showing gratitude and forgiveness throughout our lives, not only does it make people around us feel amazing it has a huge effect on how we feel too.

People who practice gratitude also

  • Sleep well
  • Are more compassionate and kind
  • Have strong immune systems

When we are grateful we positively change our perspective on the way we live our lives.  It can literally rewire your brain and make you feel more positive.

Gratitude should be a daily practice you could choose one of these things or more to do.

  • First thing in the morning take five mins to feel grateful and positive about your day ahead
  • Throughout the day, be present and feel gratitude for everything you do and see, say thank you and mean it, try to feel that gratitude in your heart.
  • Write a letter or email of gratitude to someone important to you.
  • AT the end of the day list in a journal the things you are grateful for

Journaling is also used for managing stress or helping you to meet your goals, writing things down can really help you clear your head. It can help you see things clearer and can even combat mental health

Being able to forgive is also very powerful force –people who can learn to forgive often say that they have less physical problems such as backache, muscle tension, dizziness, headaches, stomach problems and less.  They have a general feeling of well being because you are now allowing yourself to heal.

And yet we do find it hard to allow ourselves to forgive because wit this that we are pardoning or excusing the other person, or that we actually have to go and say we forgive them or that we are sorry.  ( although sometimes that might help)  Forgiveness also doesn’t mean that you have to forget it ever happened and have a person back in your life – no forgiveness means setting yourself free, releasing yourself from pain or a problem you have been holding on to.

By forgiving you are just accepting what happened and finding a way to live with it.  It’s not about the other person its about healing yourself, and we still find it hard.

How to let go

  • First, make a conscious decision to forgive
  • Accept you feel pain and the responsibility
  • Don’t feel the victim any more and blame other
  • Focus on the present and not the past
  • Forgive them
  • Forgive yourself

 Taking supplements and smart drugs

Some people do not like supplements because they think we should be able to get eveyrthing we need from our diet, that taking supplements isn’t natural.  But with our fast-paced lives, we soon find our from our doctor that we are deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral.

When you take suppliements it doesn’t mean that you can skimp on fruit and veggies or make this an excuse to have a poor diet no, it should be complimenting your diet.

Smart drugs

Smart drugs sound a bit scary what are these you wonder. These drugs are neuroprotective so they don’t damage your brain in anyway – or that’s the claim.

Its said that Smart drugs or Nootropics improve your brain’s performance, increase your memory, help you concentate and even increase your intelligence.

Some say however that it could be just the placebo effect, you know where you think something is working so you believe it is. The brain is an powerful tool

I’m not sure we know enough about Smart Drugs yet, they really do sound like the wonderdrugs which could be the answer to everything but maybe for the beginner biohacker it might be best to stick with the simple hacks at first. As we have listed  here. Good sleep, good food, and exercise!

Ryans Stack

Interestingly though someone who is a professional bionacker Ryan Goodwin, shared with us his “stack” that takes to have the brain energy and cogintive function that he says he needs to “kick ass”

  • Protandim Nrf2 Synergizer
  • PhysIQ® Probio
  • Magnesium L-Threonate
  • Bulletproof Coffee with Collagen Peptides
  • Omega+
  • Protandim NRF1 Synergizer

Can’t you tell he’s a prosfessional! It all sounds a bit much to me – so check them out before you start taking them.

He even takes more than that –  he says that these aren’t for everyone and that you need to experiement with yourself to build awareess of what is working and not working for you.

Many articles do recommend the Bulletproof Coffee saying that they put a spoonful of MCT oil in their coffee.  And yes he does sound crazy but aparently its delicous and  will even fit in with your intermittent fasting plan.  See how to make Bulletproof Coffee

There are natural ways you can boost your brain power too , like memory games or meditation. Plus dark chocolate and black tea can help.

Drink more water

That’s not the first time you have heard that one – drinking more water makes you think better, focus better and be more altert

Many people say that you should drink 8,9 10 glasses of water per day but The Medical news today – say that there is actually no universally agreed quanity of water that must be consumed daily.

Most of our bodily functions need water to work properly  – the digestive system,  the kidney, the brain, spinal cord and even the airways need it.

Some of of water comes from foods we eat with high water content

  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon
  • Garlic
  • Cantaloupe
  • Pineapple
  • Oranges
  • Raspberries
  • Iceberg Lettuce
  • Celery
  • Green Peppers
  • Spinach
  • Cucumbers

How to drink more water

We loved these hacks from showing  how to drink more water every day

  1. Add flavor to your pitcher.
  2. Drink a glass after every bathroom break.
  3. Sip before every meal.
  4. Use an app to track your cups.
  5. Or take it a step further and get a high-tech water bottle.
  6. Dilute sugary drinks with water and ice.
  7. Keep a gallon jug nearby.
  8. Invest in a filter.
  9. Choose sparkling or mineral water over soda.
  10. Eat water-rich foods.
  11. Stick to a one-to-one rule when drinking alcohol.
  12. Use a marked water bottle.
  13. Anytime you drain your glass or bottle, fill it back up.
  14. Snack on salty stuff.
  15. Get into herbal tea.
  16. Keep water bottles filled up around the house and in your car and all your bags.
  17. Set a deadline for every eight ounces.
  18. Make a rule that every time you work out, you’ll bring a water bottle and finish the whole thing.
  19. Get some cool reusable straws.
  20. Drink a glass of water every time you’re waiting for coffee to brew.
  21. Make transitions in your day opportunities to chug water.
  22. Reward yourself for hitting your goals.

As you can see drinking more water is much more than just going to the tap and filling up your glass 10 times a day – try It and see how much better you feel.

You didn’t think you were going to get away without out doing exercise did you ?

The benefits of regular exercise are

  • You’ll feel happier
  • Weight loss
  • Boost energy levels
  • Skin will glow
  • Boost brain and memory
  • And help sleep

When we exercise our body releases chemicals called endorphins, which reduce our perception of pain and improve our mood.

You’ll notice that just 10 mins a few days a week will make a big difference to how you feel.

If you want a biohack to kick you into renewed  focus just get yourself a 40min intense workout session and you will be ready to go again.

HIIT – The Exercise Hack

However the best biohack for exercise is the HIIT plan, this is two to three days a week of solid HIIT, with 24hours of rest inbetween sessions.

Its all about elevating your heart rate to burn some fat and how to know when to rest.

There are so many Work outs online – search HIIT for beginners to get started.

How to Download Your Flickr Photos Before Deletion in 3 days – Extension March 12th

Well, that went quick, it seems only yesterday we learned that Flickr had been sold – when it was actually almost a year ago.    Now we need to know How to Download Your Flickr Photos Before Deletion in 3 days!

June 2010 was when I signed up for Flickr, it was the year I started my Social Media Management Journey.  I didn’t actually use Flickr that much. I didn’t abuse the fact that we could store so many images there, I forget what storage it started with but its now 2tbs but over time I have accrued over 3000 images.

How to Download Your Flickr Photos Before Deletion in 3 days

So, the story is SmugMug acquired Flickr last year from Yahoo (sigh) – and immediately said – well that’s enough of your free ride – you can only have 1000 images free now – not 2TBs!!!  Thanks very much, SmugMug  –  so unless you are going to get a pro account which isn’t that much but why bother when you can store them on Google photos for free which is awesome, better than Flickr TBH – of course, there is always the chance that Google will get rid of Google Photos but we can cross that bridge when we come to it. Or of course, there is Amazon Photos but that is always reliant of you having Amazon Prime.

We really don’t like it when we have had something free for so long, having to pay for it. Which happens, of course, businesses are here to make money and  I realise £5.99 isn’t a lot – but it all adds up – and why pay when you don’t need to.

But it is what it is… I’m not getting a pro account – as I said I didn’t use it much only to store some images to share either privately or with friends. And I did use to like and share peoples images at one point too.

UPDATE Flickr has given an extension you now have until the 12th of March to meet the new limits – it might have something to do with the fact that everyone said the site was down when they were trying to get their photos

How to download your images from Flickr

So there are many ways to do this – the first way is to go Settings and about

Request my Flickr data.

and it says that you can download all of your data that’s photos, metadata, comments, and GPS data that accompany the photos in a zip file – and they would email it to you – well I did that and I didn’t see anything for hours, I guess they are busy but I didn’t want to chance it.

So I thought I’d download them manually too…

How to Download Your Flickr Photos Before Deletion in 3 days

Click –  YOU
and then  – Camera Roll

How to Download Your Flickr Photos Before Deletion in 3 days

Click Select all and Download

I read that you could only download 5000 at a time, I’m not sure if that is still relevant. But if so then do each album at a time.

FYI the site is really slow right now. I assume everyone has left it until the last minute to do this.

Another way to download is to click albums and delete each album depending on how many albums you have. I did mine this way because I am hoping then I can keep them in each album.

So on any of these ways once you click download you will get a notification that you will be able to save a zip file to your computer.

Creative Commons on Flickr

Flickr did say that they won’t remove any Creative Commons images. However now it seems you can’t just change your permissions to creative commons in an attempt to not have your photos taken down.

Flickr said…….

Are Commons Photos Being Deleted?

No. And once more for good measure: no, Commons photos are not being deleted.

Photos that were Creative Commons licensed before our announcement are also safe. We won’t be deleting anything that was uploaded with a CC license before November 1, 2018. Even if you had more than 1,000 photos or videos with a CC license. However, if you do have more than 1,000 photos or videos uploaded, you’ll be unable to upload additional photos after January 8, 2019, unless you upgrade to a Pro account.

So thats a shame, I would have had mine as CC but I didn’t change all of them until after November if you’d like to just in case

Here is how to change the license on your images – Click here – Flickr/privacy

And click the right license for you – I changed mine to Non-commercial ShareAlike

3 Days Left to Download your Photos before Flickr Deletes them

I hope you know now How to Download Your Flickr Photos Before Deletion in 3 days

Well, I wonder how many will be signing up for a pro account – are you?

YouTube are Banning Prank and Challenge Videos

At Last YouTube are Banning Prank and Challenge Videos. I can’t believe its taken them so long,  YouTube‘s recent announcement seems to be in the wake of the Bird Box challenge.  The tide pod challenge wasn’t enough.

YouTube said it had updated its policies to clearly state that challenges that have the potential to cause death or physical injury and have no place on YouTube.  So don’t panic everyone you will still be able to see the standard pranks and jokes but not if they are seriously dangerous.

At Last YouTube are Banning Prank and Challenge Videos

These challenges the kids are doing can be very dangerous, and us older more sensible people (haha) are dreading the news that someone has been hurt, poisoned or worse died doing these silly pranks.

What is the bird box challenge?

The Bird Box challenge is when people are doing their normal activities while blindfolded. The challenge was inspired by the Netflix film, which features characters blindfolded because they can’t look at the beast.  Many people started to film their own challenges and post it on Youtube.  And people have participated in dangerous activities while blindfolded, like driving…

What is the Pod Challenge

As offensive and dangerous as the Bird Box Challenge this one is called the Tide Pod Challenge. This ridiculous trend saw teens filming themselves while they attempt to eat Tide laundry detergent pods. Which can be deadly if ingested. , before challenging others to do the same.  Although I do think many were just pretending for the camera, and some wouldn’t go through with it. There is always the change that someone would go through with it and take it too far.  Which we did see with the Cinnamon challenge.

Where Does it State That YouTube are Banning Prank and Challenge Videos

The new guidelines from YouTube state that

Content that encourages violence or dangerous activities that may result in serious physical harm, distress or death violates our harmful and dangerous policy, so we’re clarifying what this means for dangerous challenges and pranks. YouTube is home to many beloved viral challenges and pranks, but we need to make sure what’s funny doesn’t cross the line into also being harmful or dangerous. We’ve updated our external guidelines to make it clear that we prohibit challenges presenting a risk of serious danger or death, and pranks that make victims believe they’re in serious physical danger, or cause children to experience severe emotional distress.

I don’t think it will stop the challenger however. I’m sure the kids will just post their videos on Snapchat.Instagram, Facebook Live, Periscope or where ever else they can.

Whatsapp Gold Martinelli Hoax Again

Whatsapp Gold Martinelli Hoax Again

I think we first saw the Whatsapp Gold Marinelli Hoax back in 2016 – its a chain letter, its spam, it’s just annoying.  Like the one previous to this one, it came back time and time again, the last time I saw it was 2014. David D Suretech – told us we had to forward his message in order to stay on Whatsapp.

If you know anyone using WhatsApp you might pass on this. An IT colleague has advised that a video comes out tomorrow from WhatsApp called martinelli do not open it , it hacks your phone and nothing will fix it. Spread the word. If you receive a message to update the Whatsapp to Whatsapp Gold, do not click !!!!!
Now said on the news this virus is difficult and severe

Pass it on to all

It wasn’t on the radio and it wasn’t just announced…..

Don’t send it to everyone – just tell everyone to not forward or download stuff from Whatsapp. Then we can all keep safe.

They appear to have mixed up two previous hoaxes’ which over the years have slightly changed the wording and only once was there anything with it – and we weren’t warned about it either – it was just there. Since then we just get these warnings.

It was back in 2016 that that said Whatsapp Gold was a premium service that you could get, and you’d get super things if you download it now for free – of course, it wasn’t – it was fake and if you downloaded whatever that was you might get some nasty stuff – but the video regarding Martinelli never existed at all.

The best way to stay safe is to never download anything you don’t exactly know what it is.. This is why forwards are so frowned upon because of they usually fake news or spam and why India has tried to stamp out people sending forwards

To keep safe make sure that you…

  • Always update security updates
  • Only get apps from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Get security software for your phone Sophos Mobile Security for iOS or Android.

Whatsapp Gold Martinelli Hoax Again

Here are some tips from Whatsapp help about forwards

Tips to help prevent the spread of rumors and fake news

  1. Understand when a message is forwardedMessages with the “Forwarded” label help you determine if your friend or relative wrote the message or if it originally came from someone else. Double check the facts when you’re not sure who wrote the original message. To learn more about forwarding messages, please read these articles.
  2. Check photos and media carefullyPhotos, audios, and videos can be edited to mislead you. Look at trusted news sources to see if the story is being reported elsewhere. When a story is reported in multiple places, it’s more likely to be true.
  3. Look out for messages that look differentMany messages or website links you receive containing hoaxes or fake news have spelling mistakes. Look for these signs so you can check if the information is accurate. To learn more about suspicious links, please read these articles.

If its too good to be true it usually isn’t

  1. Check your biasesWatch out for information that confirms your preexisting beliefs and review the facts before sharing information. Stories that seem hard to believe are often untrue.
  2. Fake news often goes viralEven if a message is shared many times, this does not make it true. Don’t forward a message because the sender is urging you to do so.
  3. Verify with other sourcesIf you’re still not sure if a message is true, search online for facts and check trusted news sites to see where the story came from. If you still have doubts, ask fact-checkers or people you trust for more information.
  4. Help stop the spreadIf you see something that’s fake, tell the person that sent it to you and ask them to verify information before they share it. Don’t share a message because someone tells you to do so. If a group or a contact is constantly sending fake news, report them. To learn how to report a contact or a group, please read this
Save Lives with Elliot for Water the Social Good Search Engine

Save Lives with Elliot for Water the Social Good Search Engine

Why am I talking about Elliot for Water the Social Good Search Engine?  What’s so special about this search engine?  Well, as you may know, I’m always looking out for ways that we can use social media for good – we have these platforms at our fingertipsand we have lots of followers. So we even a voice which we can use  to really make a difference.  I recently created a Whatsapp Group for businesses and startups who are using the internet, blockchain or social…for good, or to “Save the World” which is the name of our Whatsapp group, together we can move mountains!

What is Social Good

Social good is about getting people to be involved in actions that Benefit Human Society and the Earth by harnessing the power of technology and social media in particular.  And with Elliot for Water, we can actually save lives by just surfing the web – which we basically do every day – it literally costs us nothing to save lives.

There are around 5 Billion Google Searches every day

Imagine how many lives you could save if you used Elliot for water – it’s mind-blowing.

Elliot for Water the Social Good Search Engine

By engaging and sharing and bringing people together we CAN change the world for the better.

Elliot for water – the facts

Elliot for water is a search engine which runs on Bing that allows all us to help others!  Social Good – now we can do our bit to help without any effort at all by just using the search engine.  We can help those people who are one-fifth of people who have no access to clean drinking water.

We can help to prevent the SIX THOUSAND people who die PER DAY due to water-related diseases by using this search platform

Elliot For Water’s mission is to help bring drinkable water to as many people as possible and to improve the quality of life while respecting the needs of the local culture and environment.

Elliot For Water donates 60% of its profits to buy Solwa Technologies, solar energy based products that purify dirty or polluted water through desalination, the irrigation of arid grounds, and the dehydration of food. has been created to make something good, concrete and sustainable for the world and for who lives it. This company is an example that together we can make a change through something as simple as surfing the net.

800 million people, 1 out of 9, still live without access to safe drinking water, according to WHO. Elliot for Water aims to change this.

So so cool!

I wanted to find more out about how this works and more of the background story so I interviewed the founder and CEO Andrea Demichelis who is part of our “Save the World” group on Whatsapp.

Andrea is a remarkable young man, 25 years old – an Italian living in Paris, trying to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Elliot for Water the Social Good Search Engine

First, who are you and what do you do…

My name is Andrea Demichelis and I’m a 25-year-old Italian man working to leave a positive impact in the world. After my business studies in Paris, I understood that I was not supposed to follow the conventional Wall Street path, but rather creating something of my own. Soon enough, this “something of my own” became “something that could really impact the world” and I ended up founding Elliot For Water. Elliot For Water is just like Google, the difference is, it creates water every time you use it.

How did you come up with the idea for Elliot for water

The idea came out of nowhere, I was not really looking for it, to be honest. The moment I decided that I wanted to do something more than just making money a documentary about water was passing on tv.  I remembered all my studies about the topic, and how 60% of the deaths in developing countries are directly linked to water. I ended up asking myself: why not creating a Google for water? It could help millions of people without asking for one single penny of donation. It made a lot of sense in my head, and I went all in with this idea.

Who works with you on Elliot for water

Because of funding, an aspect that all startups face, I’ve been working alone until now, with temporary collaborators from now and then. The good news is, I’m in the process on assembling my own team of Avengers right now. If all go well, by February we’ll be able to start working altogether.
Elliot for Water the Social Good Search Engine

Kids, in developing countries, have to walk up to 6 hours a day to collect water for their families.

How do people get water from people using a search engine

The principle is very simple and it works just like any other search engine: you go on Elliot For Water and make your search, for example, hotel in Paris. The search engine will then give you all the results, which for us are coming directly from Bing, and, among these results, you will find some sponsored links, advertising.
Every time one of these links is clicked, Elliot For Water automatically raise money. 60% of the profit, then, goes to financing clean water projects. In this way, you end up donating 1 liter of safe drinking water every time you make a search.

Who gets the water, there are many people in need.

Our mission is to give water to 1 million people by 2025 so, hopefully, a lot of people will be helped. To begin, we are working in Guinea-Bissau, thanks to a collaboration with our charity partner WellFound.

Why did you choose Guinea-Bissau to help first and how do you prioritize.

We chose Guinea-Bissau, as our first country to work with, because of the trust that I have in WellFound. This charity from London has been working on the ground, and with the poorest villages of the country, for more than 10 years now, terrifically helping the local communities.
As far as the prioritizing is concerned, I feel that the best thing I could do, especially now that we are at the very beginning of our path, is to put my trust in expert hands in the field, who can advise me on how to move in a very critical and difficult field.

What do you need help with?

I would say in getting the search engine out in the world and, probably even more important, improve it. All feedbacks, at this stage of the project, are more than welcome. In the end, I want to build a search engine based on the people who use it.

How can we help you?

The best thing you can do is setting Elliot for Water as your default search engine, and share it with your friends on all your social media channels.

What’s next?

The next two things will be the realization of our first clean water project in Guinea-Bissau and the creation of the team of superheroes who will bring water to 1 million people in a matter of few years.

Thank you, Andrea, this is such a great project, and I wish you all the best, I’m sure we all do.

All you have to do, to help, is change your search engine. Use Elliot For Water: It’s just like Google, but it creates water every time you search!
