Ello the new social network – if you’ve not heard about it by now, I wonder where you’ve been. I’ll give you some background incase you haven’t read about it yet.
Ello was started as a private network between a few artists and programmers @budnitz @bergerfohr @todd @lucian @gv @mk @jayzes @cacheflowe which grew and grew and they eventually decided to build a public version, which is now being rolled out mostly via invites from other users.
The hook with Ello is that this social network is totally ad-free and Ello doesn’t sell your data to third parties and they say that unlike all of the other social networks that started ad-free and changed their policies about protecting our data – Ello won’t do that.
Ello really created a stir, I don’t think this was actually just their manifesto that did this but the way they are making people wait for invites – probably so the servers don’t crash with everyone trying to get on at once but this making us wait has had us itching to see what we are missing. (Well it did me)
Ello IS in Beta
Yes, what you see now on Ello isn’t the finished version it is in beta and 2 months ago they created this list of things to come, which I assume they are adding to. So before you dismiss it without even trying it because you don’t like what it looks like. I’d cut them some slack – and see how it unfolds.

My thoughts about Ello the new social network
Well right now, it looks very plain – and at first I thought ewww I don’t like this – but actually its grown on me. I do like it.
Usage – It feels very clunky and awkward to use at first. – but you do get used to it and there are some tips and tricks to learn which is fun – such as if you press CTRL/CMD and enter you don’t have to search around for the post button. I also didn’t realise that there is actually a edit button. At first it wasn’t clear at first how to add a picture, there is an upload button or you can drag and drop which I love – this is very fast actually. Much simpler than other networks.
Other cheats are
You can use one asterisks * either side of your *word* to create italics –
Two asterisks **bold** to create bold words
If you put an asterisk and then a space you can bullet points with lists.
You can use standard emoji – :ello: puts the ello logo – 😉 🙂 :sleepy: those sorts of emojis work.
Friends – Its hard to find friends – you can either click on DISCOVER and type the names you are looking for in search or the simplest way is to stalk friends that you have with lots of friends on Ello and you will find people there. There is also a website that shows the most active, the most followed and featured users, which is most helpful – you can add your self to it too. Check out – https://shello.co its a great help!
Notifications – The only notifications you actually get is by email so you have to scroll through your wall to see what you have missed. I don’t mind that at this stage as I’ve only got 66 friends. So hopefully notifications are coming soon, they are on the list. You can add people to your noise list if they are too much for you – so you can keep friends and noise separate, at the moment I’m not finding too much noise so my friends are all on my friends list.
All in all I like it now, it took a few days to grow on me but I like how users are using it – people that don’t engage on Twitter or Facebook are actually using Ello and chatting to people …as yet there is no automation available so if you are going to sign up and use it, thats exactly what you have to do – use it. And I really really like this, after all its not the platform that makes the network is the users and how they use it … I think so. I’ve already connected with some new people and thats what I love! I’m not sure how long they can keep automation out as this would probably bring more users, but I hope they can, as its giving such a nice feel to the network. Also another great thing is since I’ve signed up I’ve had lots of people coming to look at my blog to check me out. So thats another bonus. I don’t think its going to be a Facebook killer as its been suggested but I’m happy to add it to my list of networks that I use right now, and will watch for updates.
I wanted to set up my account this @michelledh but there was a problem with that account I couldn’t log back in- so Ello sent me another code – and I am now @techieminx connect with me there.
