22 Whatsapp Expert Tips and Sneaky Tricks

Whatsapp tips and tricks for group chats mainly but some of these will be applicable for normal chats too.

Following the success of our last post about Whatsapp tips and tricks and everyone saying they wanted more I thought it was time to write another post.  There are so many tricks and so many versions but iOS and Android are mostly the same – just sometimes worded differently so I’ve tried to include some of the Android stuff.  On Whatsapp web just replace Tap for Click and of course, there is no holding down but there is an arrow there instead on PC.

You can’t do everything that you can on the mobile app to Whatsapp web but many things are similar.  Any questions please just ask. Here or find me on Twitter @michelledh

  1. Tap on the message

  3. Next, tap reply privately

This will take you directly into a private message with the person – and bring over the message so that they know what you are referring to – like it does when you reply to a message in a group.

Sent a message to multiple on Whatsapp

I’m not a fan of this one, as I think you have to be careful not to end up being a spammer.  However, sometimes you might want to invite people to an event.   The good thing is the recipient has to have you in their own address book (contacts) to receive the message.

Go to Whatsapp

At the top left it says Broadcast Lists.

  • Tap Broadcast Lists
  • Tap create new list at the bottom
  • Add who you want in the list from your contact list
  • Tap create

Now you can type the one message to all of the people on that list.

Looks like a group really.

Creating a Custom LinkedIn URL

#Branding – Creating a Custom LinkedIn URL

Today I wanted to help with a very important part of branding – Creating a Custom LinkedIn URL. [URL – Universal Resource Locator meaning – The address of a World Wide Web page] such as https://www.michelleharris.social

I didn’t realise until today that people still aren’t taking the advantage of creating a customer LinkedIn URL. And its so much easier to get than other networks to get.

I noticed that one of my clients had the URL that LinkedIn assign you with and so I checked a few more, and I found many people not using the Custom LinkedIn URLs.

When you first sign up to LinkedIn and create your account LinkedIn will assign a URL to your account, this URL will be comprised of letters and numbers.  Usually your name with a dash separating it and some numbers.

Which looks something like this linkedin.com/in/your-name-b439-4321

This URL isn’t good for branding, SEO or getting found on a search. It doesn’t look savvy at all – It needs to go right away, and its very simple to do.

Creating a Custom LinkedIn URL

First, you need to think about how you want to be found on Linkedin.  Most people would just choose their name, but in a lot of cases, this name will have been taken. You could use what you want to be known as in business, such as your business name or you could use your business name and then your own name.

Your custom URL can have from 5 to 30 letters or numbers. You cannot use spaces, symbols or any special characters, which is rather annoying but that’s what we have to work with.   It is case sensitive so if you want something like LVlovesPR that would be fine.

I always had my name as michelledh as that’s how I am known online, but I’ve recently changed it to MichelleHarrisSocial after my rebranding.

If you don’t like what you have created for your custom LinkedIn URL you can change it up to five times within six months. After that, all is not lost but you will have to wait six months to change it again.

How to Create a Custom Linkedin URL

  • Click your profile picture icon at the top right of your LinkedIn homepage.
  • Click View profile.
  • On your profile page, click Edit your public profile on the right.

  • Now you will see – Edit your public profile on the right with your URL underneath

www.linkedin.com/in/MichelleHarrisSocial – beside this is a pencil icon – click that to edit the URL

  • Type the last part of your new custom URL in the text box.
  • Click Save.

And that’s it, now you can share this link, add it to your email signature, website, business card, anywhere and it won’t look silly.

Hope this helps you to get started Creating a Custom LinkedIn URL

How to Streamline your Twitter Notifications

I’m sure everyone by now should have the new controls which can streamline your Twitter notifications. These settings on mobile and web (Twitter.com) enable us to have better control of our what we see on Twitter in our notifications.

Do you click notifications when you go to Twitter and wonder why the heck you need to see all of those messages in your feed when they mean nothing to you?  Sometimes I do – you get tagged in things what you really don’t want to see. This can stop you from having to see them in your feed.

The settings that you now have available to you mean that you can mute any notifications in your Twitter feed from people you really do not want to hear about, like people who haven’t bothered to put up a profile picture or people who haven’t confirmed their email.  This makes Twitter much more streamline and prevents us from having to see spammy tweets.  It also stops us from seeing the bullying type tweets from accounts just set up for that purpose.  Remember though also you can set up lists in Twitter.  You can add people to Twitter lists if you follow them or not.

How to Streamline your Twitter Notifications

It’s very simple to find these settings

1 – Click your profile picture

2 – Click Settings and Privacy

On the left-hand side where you see “Account” at the top – go down to Notifications

How to Streamline your Twitter Notifications

3 – Click Notifications

Here you will see all of the options

  • To Mute notification from people who
  • You don’t follow
  • Users who have a default profile photo – the egg
  • Those who haven’t confirmed their email
  • Who haven’t confirmed their phone

How to Streamline your Twitter Notifications

For iOS -Click the Gear Icon – to find the Notifications timeline settings.

Quality Filter

You also have the quality filter to help streamline your Twitter notifications which when turned on, filters lower quality content from your notifications – like tweets that appear to be automated or duplicate tweets.

Mute Specific Words

Here you can see that you can also mute specific words or phrases from your tweets, which is great if you are fed up with seeing tweets about a particular television show or event on which you might be mentioned in.

It can be quite tricky to get the correct words or phrases to be muted so here is the guide from Twitter support.

Muting words, phrases, usernames, emojis, and hashtags overview:

  1. Muting is case-insensitive. For example:
If you add “CATS” to your mute list, any mention of “cats” will be muted from your notifications.
  2. You can include punctuation within a word or phrase when muting. Punctuation at the end of a word or phrase is not necessary.
  3. Muting a word will mute both the word itself and its hashtag. For example:
If you mute “unicorn”, both “unicorn” and “#unicorn” will be muted from your notifications.
  4. To mute Tweet notifications that mention a particular account, you must include the @ sign before the name. Doing this will mute Tweet notifications that mention that account, but won’t mute notifications from the account itself.
  5. Words, phrases, usernames, emojis, and hashtags up to 140 characters can be muted.
  6. Muting is possible across all Twitter-supported languages.
  7. Muting cannot be set for a particular time period. Words and phrases will remain muted until manually deleted from your settings.
  8. You can view a list of your muted words (and unmute them) in your settings.
  9. Recommendations delivered to you via email or through Twitter will not suggest content that includes your muted words and hashtags.

Now you know how to streamline your twitter notifications. You can try one or all of these things just to see how it works, and don’t worry you can always change it back again.

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Whatsapp recently added Two-step verification as an optional feature to add more security to your account. Two-Step verification sometimes called 2-Factor Authentication is a great thing to have on your mobile apps.  So we thought we just explain what it is and How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification.

What is Two-Step Verification

Two Step verification is a security feature that is designed to prevent anyone else from accessing your accounts or apps. even if they find out your password they still have to know a second layer of security.  Sometimes it’s a code sent to your phone, or to your email. With Whatsapp they have added a 6 digit code that has to be entered. When you enable this feature you can also optionally enter your email address. Which is handy to do because if you ever forget your 6 digit passcode you can use the email to disable it.

Whatsapp do not send an email to verify this information so if you receive one – do not click any links within the email. Infact never do that unless  you have requested something, there are too many phishing scams going around at the moment, always check first.

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Its quite simple to turn on Whatapps new two-step verification

In your Whatsapp app on Mobile (This is using an iPhone but I think the others will be pretty much the same)

Tap Settings – Bottom Right – The Cog.

Tap Account

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Then Tap Two-Step Verification

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Next Tap on Enable

(This image shows it as Enabled as you can see you only have the option to disable)

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

When you click enable you will go to the next screen which will all you to add a six-digit passcode

Enter that and then you have the option to add your email.

Which I would do, I realise that means that WhatsApp then have your phone and your email, but Facebook have it anyway.

Hope this helps

How find more customers on Twitter

How to find more Customers on Twitter

If you are using social media for your business, you need to have a targeted following, which is easier than you think on Twitter.  How to find more customers on Twitter, is a question that everyone asks. Twitter is a powerhouse of information which businesses sometimes overlook.  Twitter makes it easier than any other network to find and target new customers.

We all want new customers, followers, clients to get more visits to our websites and to essentially get more sales.  There is really no point in having 100k followers on Twitter who aren’t interested in what we do.  What we want are people who are interested in us and what we do.  We can search for these people or business in Twitter without even using adverts.

Twitter Bio

First of all, you need to make sure that your bio is set up correctly so that people who look at your profile know exactly what you do, and where you are. Add keywords and include a link, the link is very important, this can be your website, your LinkedIn, or an about.me type link which shows all of your networks.  The reason for this is that most people who will take the time to check out your profile will almost always click the link in your Bio.

Now you are reading to start searching for new customers.

How to find more customers on Twitter

Twitter makes it easy for us to find our target audience or new customers on their social network with the use of Twitter Advance Search.

With Twitter Advance Search you can search Twitter for specific phrases, find Tweets to or from a user or narrow down Tweets by location. You can even search for only the Tweets that have a happy sentiment. 🙂

First, enter a search in the “search twitter” box.

How to find more customers on Twitter

Let’s say for instance you repair washing machines in London and you search for “washing machine broken”.

You are then taken to a page with lots of tweets with those words in but these words will be in any order and might contain other words. Twitter automatically shows you the Top tweets.

How to find more customers on Twitter

At this stage, this search isn’t very helpful. These people could be anywhere in the world and it might even be something else that is broken.

At the top of this results page, you will see sections for Top Tweets, Latest Tweets, Accounts, Photos, Videos and More Options.  You can click through those if you like to see what they do. However, the option we want is More Options and now clicking Advanced Search. <<  Or you could always just use that link.  You will then see the Advance search page.

Advanced Twitter Search

With Advanced Twitter Search you can now refine your search as follows

Tweets containing:-

  • All words in any position (“Broken and Machine and Washing”)
  • Exact phrases (“Broken Washing Machine”)
  • Any of the words (“Broken” or Machine or Washing”)
  • Tweets excluding specific words (“Washing Machine” but not Broken”)
  • A specific hashtag (#Hotpoint)
  • Tweets in a specific language (written in English)

  • From a specific account (Tweeted by “@Hotpoint”)
  • Tweets sent as replies to a specific account (in reply to “@Hotpoint”)
  • Tweets that mention a specific account (Tweet includes “@Hotpoint”)

  • Tweets sent from a location of your choice or choice near to my own location

  • Choose a date range you want to see Tweets from

  • Choose a sentiment – Positive – Negative – Quotes or include retweets.

You will then be shown a new list of tweets that are much more targeted, and you still have the options above (Top Tweets, Latest Tweets, Accounts, Photos, Videos and More Options) so you can easy refine it even more.

You can then choose to Follow these accounts, put them in a list to watch them and nurture them, create conversations with them.

On this example search it was more direct so you might want to take action.  I’d still be careful about storming in saying Hey we can fix your washing machine as people don’t usually like that. What you could do is use your personal account to tweet the person “hey, it’s awful when your washing machine stops working @werepairhotpoint are in your area maybe they can fix it for you”.  Crafty, maybe but it gets your tweet across in a more helpful way.

And that is How to find more customers on Twitter.

Remember this was a really simple example of a search which shows that that by combining fields in advanced search, you have a really cool PowerSearch, without having to move from Twitter.com.  No need to even use a third-party platform.

You can even use IFTTT to save a search and send results to you via email – check out their website – maybe that’ll be another blog post.

Happy Searching – Please comment or find me on twitter @michelledh if you have any questions.

website errors costing your business hits

Are these website errors costing your business HITS!!

We are often asked to review websites for customers, to find out exactly why the website isn’t getting any hits.  This usually means the website is not being found on Google search or other search engines because of website errors.  It’s easy to find out if you have website errors costing your business hits.

With the holiday season coming up fast for e-commerce businesses it’s even more important that these websites are fully optimized. Not being found on Google or being on page 10 and having pages that load slow, is not going to help business.  First people have to be able to find you and secondly they need to want to stay on your site. Slow load pages, prevent customers sticking around.   Also, bear in mind that increased traffic can cause your website to crash if you aren’t prepared.

All websites that want to be seen need to check the health of their website.

Your website needs to:

  • Look professional
  • Load quickly
  • Be mobile friendly
  • Have optimisation
  • Be error free

So, there is a lot to think about! It’s not just having a website that is going to bring you customers or views, its how well the website has been made.

The trouble is just looking at a website that has been made for you isn’t enough. Yes, it looks great but doesn’t let you know what’s going on inside.  So we look deep inside to find out exactly what errors are lurking there and then we fix them.

How do you find out what errors are costing you business you ask…

Well, you could be an excellent coder or developer who knows about SEO or web development or you could use a tool like the one we sometimes use:-  the Ellipsis Site Checker  This site does a complete health check on your website.  Then it gives you your report which you can look at online or you can download it, to show to someone else or to refer back to later.  You can also compare your own website to a competitors website which is fun.

The good thing about this website is that it, not only explains to you why the error is bad for your website, or costing your business hits but it also show you how to correct them, and most of them you can do yourself. You’d be surprised how many website errors costing your business hits there are.

This nifty in-depth health check will tell you things like- if the page title is too long, if the meta description is there and how do create it, if its not, it will also tell you if your website is mobile friendly.  It tells you about your keyword usage, your links, and your Google page speed.  There is actually so much information this site check tool give you its crazy – and would take me an age to list them all.

All you do it put in your website URL and it does the rest for you, in few seconds.  So find out if you have website errors costing your business hits.

Its a very exciting time and businesses are rushing like crazy to get their promotions and ads out there.

So we thought now would be a good time to let you know…….

Black Friday and Cyber Monday

For those are still confused at the terms, Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving in the United States and it was created to persuade people to shop for fashion online. Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving and signifies the start of Christmas shopping season, in Philadelphia, which would bring lots of traffic, queues and mobbed stores.  Black Friday is now associated with sales in technology, games, small appliances, kitchen gadgets and the like.  These are the biggest sales days of the year and not just in the US. Since 2009 retailers all over the world have been getting in on the sales campaigns saying that this time is the busiest.

However, as we have seen time and time again business are so busy with preparing their promotions such as.

• Social media marketing
• Blog Posts
• Landing Pages
• Facebook ads
• Website ads
• Retargeting

That they do not think of the strain the increased traffic could have on their website. According to Cityam and we saw it ourselves, last year we saw 1 in 5 retail websites crashing as they were unable to cope with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s really no wonder that websites were struggling to cope as traffic volume went up by 660 percent.

We expect more traffic online this year as people want to avoid the crushes and the fights that occurred in stores last year. Some online stores had queues of over 30mins with people trying to get online to purchase bargains. So we are urging retailers to ensure that their websites are ready to cope with the influx of Traffic.

So, how to prepare your website for Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

The big companies still fail and they have the money and the staff to prevent these crashes.

Small businesses don’t need to panic however, there are some simple steps that you can take to ensure that your website doesn’t go down at a crucial time and so you don’t lose out on potential business. You still have time to prepare your website for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

First, you need to speak with your hosts or your friendly web dev people and find out if you can increase your hosting package to give your more CPU/ ram and bandwidth allowance – we are busy tracking our customer’s websites and predicting traffic surges during this time to prepare their e-commerce sites for this.

Other Options are…

Data caching
Data caching improves capability by distribution data from a backend server to multiple front-end systems.
Multisite Cloud Hosting
A multi-cloud strategy uses two or more cloud services to minimize the risk of crashing by steering traffic through the fastest routes available
Sharding your database involves breaking up your big database into many, much smaller databases which can be spread across multiple servers

A Content Delivery Network Such as

• Incapsula
• Torbit
• Amazon CloudFront
• Yottaa
• Akamai

A content delivery network will separate your data (traffic) so that it is distributed to many servers so again preventing downtime.

You can also use Pingdom to monitor your own websites and servers.

So if you are busy sending out promotional emails, fliers, posting ads and press releases about new products think first about how your website, online store, e-commerce site, shopping think about how you can prepare your website for Black Friday and Cyber Monday quickly.

We do offer websites and hosting if we can help  just drop us a line, or find me on twitter @Michelledh.

How to turn off Facebook live notifications

Now that Facebook’s live streaming feature is available to everyone, some people aren’t very happy about getting so many notifications.  Well, I have good news for you – you can simply turn off Facebook live notifications.

But first…

How to livestream on Facebook

Or maybe you didn’t even realise that you can livestream using Facebook’s app.  You cannot do it from the desktop yet unless you download OBS and make a few changes to your set up but you can stream directly from your phone.

Tap your status and you will see a list of options there, one is Live Video.  Remember you can change the settings the same as on your normal status updates to public or friends only etc.

As I said before I noticed on Twitter that people are getting rather frustrated and fed up with being told that some is “live now” on Facebook.

Turn Off Facebook Live Notifications

Go to your homepage on Facebook – Over on the far right, you see the down arrow.  It looks like an upside down triangle.  Click that and it will show you a drop-down menu.

From here, click Settings.

On the left you will see a list of options – Click Notifications

Now you are in the settings page for all notifications.  At the top, you will see On Facebook – Click Edit

Here you options for all posts on Facebook. You will usually have notifications for everything unless you turn them off.

Look down the list for Live Videos

It says – “Choose if you want to receive notifications when interesting live videos happen”

Click – On – and from the drop down menu, choose All Off

No more annoying Facebook live notifications!

How to opt out of Facebook’s ad tracking

How to opt out of Facebooks ad tracking

At the end of last month, Facebook told us they were making ads better so that we can see more of what we like.   Do we like ads?  Facebook actually said that they were told that people find ads annoying distracting and misleading – so they are now tracking us to help businesses create more high-quality ads that we want to see by expanding Audience Network.

Audience Network

Audience Network – a way for advertising to extend their campaigns beyond Facebook and into other mobile apps.  So you don’t even have to be on Facebook to see these ads coming from Facebook. This makes reach much better for advertisers who rely on ads for their business, but it seems intrusive to us the user.

Facebook are watching you, well okay everyone is watching you, but there is something you can do about this for Facebook.

They said they were putting Facebook users more in control – but reports say that they may have changed our ad settings so that we have to Opt out again.  You might want to check your Facebook ad settings and turn off Facebooks ad tracking.

I’m not sure if they have changed our settings or not, mine for sure needed to be changed to opt out but I can’t be sure.

The FTC did rule years ago that they could not change our privacy settings without approval so does this count?

Facebook now have to sort out privacy say FTC

The FTC have ruled that Facebook will now be required to obtain approval from users before making any changes to privacy settings or how data is shared and also stop anyone accessing a deleted account within 30 days of its deletion.

In this recent post from Facebook it said.

Your ad preferences also help us show you better ads on and off Facebook. If you have an account, you can edit your ad preferences to tell us if you want to see ads based on specific interests, like travel or television. Starting today, you can opt out of seeing ads on apps and websites not offered by Facebook based on your ad preferences. You can do this by visiting your Facebook settings or tapping the AdChoices icon next to an Audience Network ad.

How to opt out of Facebooks ad tracking

It’s very simple to Opt out, what I don’t like is being Opted in by default.

Go to settings

Click Adverts on the left and change all to no – or off

And that’s it.

If you are not familiar with all of the settings I would take this time, to check over your privacy settings and to even sort out what you see in your Facebook news feed there is a lot you can do to make Facebook better and more personal to your needs.

I hope that you found out How to opt out of Facebook’s ad tracking
