Emotely - the new social network with feelings

Emotely – the new social network with feelings

EmoteEmotely - the new social network with feelings ly – the new social network with feelings, an app where your feelings count.  Emotely is a platform that enables users to express how they feel by sharing their emotions to the world.

Emotely has just released a new beta version on iOS which I saw on Betalist.com and  I knew I had to test it out.

I’ve just had a few mins with this app, it’s very easy to use but I thought I’d give a quick run down to how it works and let you  know about this new emotional application.

Emotely - the new social network with feelings

Emotely – the new social network with feelings

We know how people love to share how they are feeling with emotes, now they have their own social network to do just that.

Emotely - the new social network with feelings

How to sign up to Emotely

With Emotely you can just use your phone to sign up, sort of like you do with Whatsapp – or you can sign in with Twitter, Facebook or your email and a password.  I chose the email sign up route for testing, firstly because I don’t think Twitter is working as yet, and I didn’t want to use the others for testing, email and password is safe to begin with.

Once you have done that, you are are in!

Create your username and complete your profile.   And send your first #Memote I think that’s what the status update is called, although that seems like a widely used word, maybe it should change.

To create an update of your feelings you click the Emotely logo in the middle of your screen.   I love that logo by the way –  its a bit…  “Google” but it’s cool.

When you click the logo you are presented with two options

Emote or Ping

Ping seems to be a little bit like YO, there is even a Yo option!  I gather this is a private message,  I pinged someone but I had no idea who it was, and they followed me so that’s good.  My first follower!

You choose one of three preset messages to send to your friend

  • How you doing
  • Checking in
  • Yo

Or you can create your own message to let everyone know how you feel.

Emotes to choose from are

  • Happy
  • Sad
  • Excited
  • Angry
  • Surprised
  • Afraid

but what I love about these is there is a slider so you can change your level of happiness, brilliant.

So, for instance – Happy goes from I’m feeling good all the way up to I’m feeling awesome. Then you can add hashtags.

On the next screen, you can add a description, location – and decide if you want to send to public or your followers

This is how it shares

THEN – you can share to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

If you update your profile with your profile picture the emotes appear with your picture on, if not they are emotion pictures like the one below.

When the emotes are posted, other people can click on

  • Love
  • Me too
  • Hug

and or comment on it.

I like the summary page, it’s  like analytics – it shows the percentage of people’s emotions

And they are going to be adding Maps and Trends.  I like that idea!

Okay, there is much more to come by the looks of it, and I do like Emotely – the new social network with feelings, I wasn’t sure I would from the description as I’m not a big fan of emotes or emoji but it’s much more than just posting emotes, it very interesting, I really like the interface and its working very smooth for  a beta.   I’ll bring you another update when its been updated a bit more.

You can sign  up to Emotely for free here

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Whatsapp recently added Two-step verification as an optional feature to add more security to your account. Two-Step verification sometimes called 2-Factor Authentication is a great thing to have on your mobile apps.  So we thought we just explain what it is and How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification.

What is Two-Step Verification

Two Step verification is a security feature that is designed to prevent anyone else from accessing your accounts or apps. even if they find out your password they still have to know a second layer of security.  Sometimes it’s a code sent to your phone, or to your email. With Whatsapp they have added a 6 digit code that has to be entered. When you enable this feature you can also optionally enter your email address. Which is handy to do because if you ever forget your 6 digit passcode you can use the email to disable it.

Whatsapp do not send an email to verify this information so if you receive one – do not click any links within the email. Infact never do that unless  you have requested something, there are too many phishing scams going around at the moment, always check first.

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Its quite simple to turn on Whatapps new two-step verification

In your Whatsapp app on Mobile (This is using an iPhone but I think the others will be pretty much the same)

Tap Settings – Bottom Right – The Cog.

Tap Account

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Then Tap Two-Step Verification

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

Next Tap on Enable

(This image shows it as Enabled as you can see you only have the option to disable)

How to turn on Whatsapps new two-step verification

When you click enable you will go to the next screen which will all you to add a six-digit passcode

Enter that and then you have the option to add your email.

Which I would do, I realise that means that WhatsApp then have your phone and your email, but Facebook have it anyway.

Hope this helps

Whatsapp no longer supporting these phones

Whatsapp is now seven years old and mobile or smart phones have changed so much since then, that some old phones don’t offer the capabilities that Whatsapp needs to keep updating and adding new features. Its been announced that Whatsapp no longer supporting these phones, the older ones, and you will need to upgrade if you want to continue using Whatsapp. Eeek!

I’m a big fan of Whatsapp, and I know many people are. Even my clients like to use chat apps, especially Whatsapp as its quick and easy and you can see if the message has been read (usually).  I also blog about Whatsapp often, usually to try to stop people sharing Whatsapp scams.

These changes are going to affect a lot of people, its almost a year since Whatsapp announced they had 1 BILLION users.  I use it daily now for various groups or personal conversations and I know not everyone, can update their phones all the time.  I even still have a 3GS as a backup phone which I do use now and then so I won’t be able to use Whatsapp on that anymore.

This is probably going to affect kids who are using their parent’s old phones (or is it only me that does that to my kid). Or our older generation who don’t like to upgrade their phones as they won’t know how to use them.    When you think about it, it could be pretty horrendous to some who just cannot upgrade their mobiles for one reason or another, but I do totally understand the need to be able to upgrade, and not much point supporting platforms or phones that won’t be able to keep up.

Whatsapp no longer supporting these phones

Whatsapp no longer supporting these phones

So who is getting the axe…..is Whats app no longer supporting your phone?

The platforms which are affected from January are

The platforms which are affected from January are

  • Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
  • Windows Phone 7
  • iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

And from June, support will stop on

  • BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10
  • Nokia S40
  • Nokia Symbian S60

From Whatsapp Blog

These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android running OS 2.3+, a Windows Phone 8+, or an iPhone running iOS 7+ before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.

Whatsapp say that you can’t even transfer your chat history between platforms but they are providing he option to send your chat history to your email –

Find out how to do that ….

Good luck if you do have to do this.

Does this affect you that Whatsapp no longer supporting these phones that are a bit older?

I’d be interested to know. Or does everyone have newer phones than the ones listed?  Please leave a comment and let me know.

Amazon Go - Shopping Technology with No Queues

Amazon Go – Shopping Technology with No Queues

This what we’ve all been waiting for Amazon Go – Shopping Technology with No Queues. They call it Just walk out technology!  Queues are going to be a thing of the past, I hope.   No lines, no queues, no check out, brilliant.  Queues are one of the reasons I do all of my shopping online. Standing in a queue is such a waste of time. What a dream it would be if at lunch time or when you are in a rush, you could just run in get what you need and out again.

Amazon Go - Shopping Technology with No Queues

Amazon Go – Shopping Technology with No Queues

The team at Amazon are coming up with lots of ideas lately and this has to be their best idea ever. Amazon Go – Shopping Technology with No Queues, No Queues I tell you. I’m very excited by this new tech.   Amazon have created an advanced shopping technology where you turn on your Amazon Go app, go into the shop pick up what you want and walk out.  Check out the video below, these shoppers look like shoplifters, how that will be policed?

How does Amazon Go work ?

The Amazon Go app utilizes computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning which is the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars.

Our Just Walk Out technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt.

Its as simple as that – All you need is an Amazon account, a supported smartphone, and the free Amazon Go app.

They have a 1800 square foot store in Seattle right now which is going through a beta stage but will be open to the public in early 2017.

What do you think about Amazon Go – Shopping Technology with No Queues?  Some people think its technology gone too far and other people might be concerned that it will mean less jobs?

 Networking app for Business Professionals

Innovative Networking app for Business Professionals – a must have!

TAn Innovative Networking app for Business Professionalshe newly launched Causr app is an innovative Networking app for Business Professionals because it uses location to find business people to network with, it doesn’t matter where you are and what you are doing, you can always find someone.

Causr, was created by James Eder Founder of Causr.co and Co-founder of The Bean Group. James thought that technology could help tempt fate to connect people who might usually not get the chance to meet otherwise.  Anything is possible with the technology available to us now, and he’s proved that with this app.

Networking on the go

Creating a network of like-minded business professionals is one of the best things to do for your business.  You can share information, ask for help, help others and develop a meaningful list of professional or business contacts.

Most of us will already have one or more networks of people who we connect with on various platforms, Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, or maybe even Whatsapp groups or another networking app for business professionals.

However, the difference with the app Causr is that it enables users to make meaningful connections anywhere at all with its location-based networking.  You might be staying at a hotel, be on the train, or at a meeting in a strange town, and need help or be able to offer help to someone nearby or just meet someone for a coffe.  The location isn’t exact, it just shows the locality – say for instance 1.6km away.

Causr – Networking app for Business Professionals

Causr, works pretty much like Hometouch the find a carer in your area app or just like Tinder the dating app, although its not a dating app, it really is a networking app for business professionals.  However, John says it could unintentionally happen that way!

When users create their profile they can type in what they are looking for or how they can help people.  This way when people are searching for users in their area they can instantly see what you want or need.

After you have downloaded the app you will be required to log in. When you first log into the app it will ask you if its okay to use your location, of course, you will say yes here, otherwise, there is no point.  You also get the option to only share your location while you are using the app or all the time.

Next, you sign in with LinkedIn, there isn’t another way to sign in, it only uses LinkedIn. It says that it uses LinkedIn to securely sign you in and to easily load in your profile.  First this means that users don’t have to fill in loads of details but secondly, it would stop people signing in for a laugh to mess people around.  They would have to go through creating a LinkedIn account purely for that gag, I guess that would put some people off.

How to use Causr

Once you have signed up you will see some icons at the bottom of the page.

The first one is the location icon – which finds business professionals near you with whom you can network with.   you will see on this page from the top who are people closest to you, getting further way as you go down the page.  I was surprised at this early stage to find people all around me.

If you tap on a users name – you go to the profile – where you can read more about them can add them as a connection – once they have added you as a connection you can start talking to them.

The Innovative Networking app for Business Professionals

The next icon – is 2 heads, which shows you who you have connected with – like your address books (Nothing to see here yet)

Then you have the speech-bubble which is your messenger – where you can chat to your contacts

The Innovative Networking app for Business Professionals

The next one is 3 people – which is groups, here you can join groups and connect with people that share the same interests. You just click discover groups and you are presented with a list of groups to join.  Here you can also suggest new groups or visit groups you have signed up for.

The Innovative Networking app for Business Professionals

Next is the cog – the settings button, to edit your profile etc.
So, now you know why I call it the Innovative Networking app for Business Professionals; because its such a great idea.  I’m going to try it out a bit more.  Please do let me know in the comments if you’ve tried the Causr app and what you thought of it.

You can download Causr from the app store.

Compatibility: Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Not ads on WhatsApp, but sharing data to Facebook – How to opt out.

whatsapp adsIt was announced today from WhatsApp, that Whatsapp will be sharing your personal information with Facebook including your phone number to allow businesses to communicate with users. There are lots of headlines floating around saying that we are going to get ads on Whatsapp. This does not appear to be the case.

In today’s Whatsapp blog, they stated that they haven’t made any changes to their privacy policy in four years.  But now they want to “test ways for people to communicate with businesses” Does this mean adverts – that doesn’t sound like it, not on WhatsApp anyway. They say there will be no spam and no banner ads but stuff that we get via text message all the time, like about deliveries being late or flight being delays. So no WhatsApp ads

We still do not allow third-party banner ads on WhatsApp.

In the future, we will explore ways for you and businesses to communicate with each other using WhatsApp, such as through order, transaction, and appointment information, delivery and shipping notifications, product and service updates, and marketing. For example, you may receive flight status information for upcoming travel, a receipt for something you purchased, or a notification when a delivery will be made. Messages you may receive containing marketing could include an offer for something that might interest you.

We do not want you to have a spammy experience; as with all of your messages, you can manage these communications, and we will honor the choices you make.

They are going to be sharing our information and data with Facebook so that we will get more accurate ads on Facebook.  But again you can opts out of this before signing the agreement or within 30 days after.

They confirm in today’s Whatsapp blog that they now use end to end encryption and that messages are private.  And that they won’t ever share your Whatsapp number with others, such as advertisers. Never ever….. they say.

Nothing you share on WhatsApp, including your messages, photos, and account information, will be shared onto Facebook or any of the Facebook family of apps for others to see. This means, for example, although some information will be shared with Facebook (such as your phone number), that information will not be seen by other people on Facebook.

How to opt out of sharing my Whatsapp data with Facebook

If Facebook doesn’t actually already have all of your info, you might be concerned and want to opt out. Here is how you do that.

Before you agree to the new terms of service and privacy policy

Click read – and then uncheck share my account information at the bottom that says share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook

information and image from https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/general/26000016

Or if you have already signed it, you can go to  Settings > Account > Share my account info in the app. and uncheck the box there, you only have 30 days in which to do this.

There, no panic : )

At last ! Create great designs from Canva on your iPhone

At last ! Create great designs from Canva on your iPhone

canva for iphoneCanva was founded in 2012, they launched in Beta in 2013  after getting some funding and quickly became very popular, which is not a surprise because Canva is a very easy to use FREE design tool.  I wrote about Canva on my business blog in 2014 – telling everyone about the Free Design Tool.     So now we have Canva on the web, Canva on the iPad and Canva on the iPhone, I’m so excitred to have Canva on the iPhone – it does need iOS 8.1 as you would expect.

Canva on your iPhone

I’ve been using Canva for over 2 years now and have always wanted to be able to create designs on my phone.  Everytime I put in suggestions to the team they would always say, yes this is in the works, and it always came through so we just had to be patient.   Yes there are a number of different design apps but with Canva you are able to keep all of your designs and uploads of images that you use for your designs on your account, so its quick and simple to make something using your own logo or a template that you have, I don’t find that so easy with other apps.

So what’s different about Canva on your iPhone ?

I thought there might be less on the app that on the web version but so far, there appears to be more!

  • Designed Layouts  – 1oo more created just for the iPhone
  • Add Text
  • Add your own photos
  • Enhance photos like you would on Instagram, that’s new
  • Share directly to another network – Brilliant!
  • Switch seemlessly between devices.

The last one for me, is a big bonus, any app, program, game, chat,  anything that you can switch between devices without anything changing is a bonus, like when Whatsapp Finally went to the PC  – it made me use it again properly.

I am finding it a little fiddly, if I am totally honest, I have the iPhone 5 and it has a small screen but wow – I just created something great in seconds and shared it diInstagram instagram.

The photo wasn’t the greatest, but literally I just took what I saw in my photos and stuck some text on – Strawberry Fields Forever

I am so happy to get this application, thanks Canva and the team!

How can Canva do all this for free?

How do Canva make money you might wonder – well one of the ways if that you can buy stock photo’s, images, frames, and other creations for your design, for very little money.

On the iphone app you can buy Canva credit as in-app purchases from $1.99 to $99.00

And you can now upgrade to Canva for work – well actually for sometime now.

On Canva for work you can have

  • Team branding kits – so that you can save your colours, logos and fonts
  • Layout Creators – so you can customise your own templates
  • Magically resize – so that you can resize your design to fit all networks or do what you want with them.
  • Design and photo folders – so that you can keep all your stuff in folders for your team to find.

All of the above have been things that I’ve suggested and wanted over the years and Canva have cleverly put them into the Work package, which is actually very cheap @ around £10.oo per month per member – Which if you create a lot of designs, is nothing.

Love it try it out Canva iPhone

How to stop Whatsapp Automatically Saving Photos

whatsapp-892926_640People are often finding themselves with no storage space on their iPhones because Whatsapp automatically saves all media sent to you (or to a group) in your iPhone, so one of the first questions Whatsapp users ask is…

How to stop Whatsapp automatically saving photos to their phones

Whatsapp is a very popular messaging app with over one billion users, so you might have heard of it.  They recently upped their security by adding End to End Encryption, so that has made it even more popular.  If you aren’t using it already, you possibly might do at some point in time, if so you might need this information.  So many people on Whatsapp are always asking how to stop Whatsapp from saving photos to the iPhone camera roll automatically.

When people first get on to Whatsapp they always scream about all the photos, videos and other media that is now on their iPhone or any phone,to be honest, (it’s not just an iPhone problem, it’s actually a default setting on Whatsapp) especially if they are in a lively group, who share lots of images, which is probably the most annoying as most of these photos or videos you don’t want at all.

How to stop Whatsapp saving photos to the iPhone

Not only is it a default setting on Whatsapp to save photos to your phone, they seem to make it pretty difficult to find how to turn off this setting.  Although once you know how – it is easy to do.

It’s as simple as this

  • Go to settings (The cog in the bottom right-hand corner)
  • Tap Chats

How to stop Whatsapp Automatically Saving Photos

  • Slide off – Save Incoming Media

You see underneath that it is the correct setting as it says – Automatically save images and video that you receive into the camera roll.

How to Stop Photos Automatically downloading On Android

  • Tap on the 3 DOTS
  • Tap on Settings
  • Go to Chat Settings
  • You then have some options on how you want to download content, I would suggest No Media for all.
  • Untick all Boxes

There you go, own your camera roll once more  !

So, what is Musical.ly app

what is Musical.lyThis word Musical.ly is popping up all over the place lately – you might be thinking, what is musical.ly?  If you have teenagers you probably already know what musical.ly is.  Musical.ly has had exponential growth in the past 12 months, probably mostly amongst teenagers  and is one of the top 20 apps in the free iPhone app chart with already more than 60 million users.

Musical.ly is a mobile social network that centers around music and videos – it’s basically a lipsync video creator with a social network.  From what we can find out – Musically was founded around 2 years ago by Alex Zhu and Luyau Yang as an engagement and promotion platform for entertainers.

Even though Musical.ly does have the added social network the closest app we could liken musical.ly to would be the hit app Dubsmash which has been used by many performers and artists, which looks on last count to have 75 million users – so musical.ly is catching up fast!

We know the power of video and imagery on social media,  especially with the younger generation, who love a selfie 😉 – with Vine having over 200 million users and Instagram having over 400 million, you wouldn’t really think there was room for more but Luyau and Alex seem to have found a gap, they have made making videos more fun, with more options, with an easy way to share, promote and engage.

What is Musical.ly app

Musical.ly describe themselves as a space to show off your creativity and express yourself through videos.  Users are called Musers who use the app for creative expression.

  • Post musicals you love- Express yourself and show off your personality by creating great musicals, you may even get featured.
  • Like, follow and comment- Show support to other musers and tell them that you like their musicals.
  • Flag inappropriate content- To flag a musical press on the button with three dots and then click “report abuse

Some musers that have been featured have risen to stardom on musical.ly – and are now celebs in their own right – such as Muser Ariel Martin @babyariel – who at 15 years old has gained 7 million followers on musical.ly in under a year and has now made a career out of it, being interviewed on TV shows, magazines, websites, and by Social Media stars such as Gary Vaynerchuk who also had Ariana Renee @theylovearri on the show. The best part of this show for me is that the girls say that Twitter is the most popular social network among their friends, come on Twitter! 🙂

Watch the show here, its a great insight to what is musical.ly.

It’s pretty cool that misical.ly is available for free still – you can get it in the iOS App Store, Google Play Store, and the Amazon App Store.

musical.ly isn’t available on all Android phones as yet, but they are working on it.

End-to-end encryption makes communication on WhatsApp finally private

whatsapp-892926_1280End-to-end encryption makes communication on WhatsApp finally private – Whatsapp today have stepped up their privacy game by adding end-to-end encryption – it was one factor that was leaving them behind in the communication race with many other apps such as Telegram and Skype already using this method of secure communication.

What is end to end encryption (E2EE)

Whatspp end-to-end encryption was developed in collaboration with Open Whisper Systems.

What it actually means is that no one – apart from who you allow – can read your chat or listen to your phone calls via WhatsApp – not hackers, cyber criminals, an internet service provider, government or indeed any other third party.  What they call cryptographic keys are used to encrypt and decrypt the messages. Basically all messages, documents, photos, videos, voice messages  are secured with a lock and key, and no one else can get your secret number unless you allow it.

End-to-end encryption makes communication on WhatsApp finally private

The absence of end to end encryption hasn’t prevented the hoards of people using Whatsapp and signing up – with something like 1 billion users worldwide its quite surprising that Whatsapp has only just added end to end encryption but now they are saying that they are one of the few platforms to have full end-to-end encryption by default. You may need to update your app to get this addition to your security but it will be automatic.

You will get this message to confirm.

Messages you send to this chat and calls are now secured with end-to-end encryption, which means WhatsApp and third parties can’t read or listen to them.

where you can verify, or learn more on the popup.

So, people that weren’t worried about the security on WhatsApp before probably won’t be excited about this update. However, I’m sure that we will now see a lot more people using WhatsApp who were using other communication systems previously, purely because they were concerned about the security on WhatsApp.
