YouTube toughens rules to protect families and kids

YouTube toughens rules to protect families and kids

To watch age-restricted videos on YouTube, you must be signed in and have indicated on your profile that you are of legal age to view mature content.   So if you are not logged this means that ideally, you cannot view videos that are age-restricted.  The problem is that first, very young children and families often watch on a logged in trusting parents account or that some videos which are supposed to be family friendly are actually not and these are slipping through the net. (Pun intended) These videos are free for all to see and they are not suitable for kids, some are horrific with millions of views. So, it’s about time that YouTube toughens rules to protect families and kids.

All this comes after many attacks aimed Google who own YouTube that the site isn’t safe for kids and in fact exploiting them.  BuzzFeed even provided Youtube with dozens of examples of videos.

Google has started the cleanup and boy do they need one – how many sites are there like the YouTube Channel Toy Freaks which was terminated by Youtube last week – which had a lot of dodgy content aimed at kids, which most parents called creepy and abusive but still had 8.5 Million subscribers.

Age Restrictions on Accounts

Like every social network, YouTube has age restrictions for you have an account.  You have to be 18 to open an account but with parents consent, you can sign up for an account as young as 13, but this just isn’t enough, you can skirt around these restrictions easily.    When you had to sign up with Google+ to youtube there was an outcry because people didn’t want to have to use their own names…

Its always been the case that videos may be randomly reviewed and then have an age restriction slapped on them, or the content might be taken down completely or just muted, but these videos might not have even violated YouTube rules.  But it must be pretty hard to spot, to be fair, unless someone complains about the video, even with all the bots and staff they have looking out for this stuff.

With these YouTube Stats, you can understand the problem is HUGE

  • The total number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000.
  • 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!
  • Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day.

Users often try to pass content off as family friendly when it’s clearly not – I guess this is to get more views, without a care if a 3-year-old might stumble upon it.

Content is not classed as family friendly if it has

However, these new guidelines are tougher than before  > Youtube say in the GoogleBlog

In the last couple of weeks we expanded our enforcement guidelines around removing content featuring minors that may be endangering a child, even if that was not the uploader’s intent. In the last week we terminated over 50 channels and have removed thousands of videos under these guidelines, and we will continue to work quickly to remove more every day.

Some content will now be labelled at only over 18 and you will have to be logged in to watch.

They will be removing any ads that are used which are inappropriate and are targetting families. They will also be blocking inappropriate comments on videos featuring minors.

On the other side of the coin, they also need to remove some content which, younger or more immature users are posting.

There will also be more guidance available for those to do want to help make youtube a more family-friendly environment.

Johanna Wright, Vice President of Product Management at YouTube said

Across the board we have scaled up resources to ensure that thousands of people are working around the clock to monitor, review and make the right decisions across our ads and content policies. These latest enforcement changes will take shape over the weeks and months ahead as we work to tackle this evolving challenge. We’re wholly committed to addressing these issues and will continue to invest the engineering and human resources needed to get it right. As a parent and as a leader in this organization, I’m determined that we do.

If your Facebook page is really busy and getting lots of comments and messages, you might benefit a chatbot.  Facebook has a free one and this is How to set up response assistant on your Facebook page.    Response assistant will reply to any messages you get, with a message right away telling people you have got the message and you will get back to them right away.  Or in fact, you can put any message that you wish as a response.

This will really help if you do get lots of enquires and are struggling to reply to people right away.  Its important to reply as soon as possible, not only does your client expect it but Facebook shows the response time and response rate of pages for all to see.   And this can affect the algorithms make your page seen even less.

There are more sophisticated bots on the market you can use, which do a lot more than Facebooks response assistant, but really this is all you need for a simple – Hey thanks for the message we will get back to you soon.  We will let you know about these other apps another blog post.

Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter

Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter #280characters

People are asking –  Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter ?  I for one liked that Twitter had a restriction to 140 characters.  It has always meant you can click to see more if you want to but you could scroll through quickly to see if there was anything you wanted to read.

So, finally, Twitters #280characters is here

It seems everyone is either very angry or very hyper and silly – there are tweets just full of emojis or lots of one word or just nonsense.

Yesterday at 9pm Twitter tweeted

We’re expanding the character limit! We want it to be easier and faster for everyone to express themselves.

Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter

And all of a sudden it seemed that everyone was given 280 characters, which we thought was strange as usually this sort of thing is rolled out – although I did here one ONE person who said they didn’t have the new longer tweets.

Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter

Back in September Twitter had a test, where they expanded the 140 limit because they wanted to give us more ways to express ourselves.  During these tests after the first novelty of having more characters that people only really used them where necessary.  We are really hoping that this happens this time too, as of right now there are so many long tweets, its beginning to be a pain to scroll through them all.   They were really concerned about this happening but it turned out that only 5% of tweets were longer, so they are telling us now that our Twitter experience shouldn’t change.    I know Twitter are trying to compete in the competition but really the things that we love about Twitter are the things that set it apart from the others, right?

Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter

Immediately after 280 characters were introduced on Twitter – #280characters started to trend and hasn’t stopped.

What are people saying about the new longer tweets.

So far its not good ….

What do you think of the 280 character limit now on Twitter or are you shaking your head and still wondering Why do we have 280 Characters on Twitter

Why can't I get my Facebook Username or Custom URL

Why can’t I get my Facebook Username or Custom URL

There appears to be a bug on some Facebook pages during creation of the page – and you might be thinking, Why can’t I get my Facebook Username or Custom URL

You try to enter your prefered username and Facebook sends up a message saying

Username isn’t available – This Page isn’t eligible to have a username.

It used to be that you had to have 25 likes to get your username or Custom URL. but for some time now that hasn’t been necessary.

Why can’t I get my Facebook Username or Custom URL

So, you’ve created a new page or maybe you are finally getting around to creating your page username, not sure why you waited so long to do that, that should be done right away but still.  Know you know that having a page username will make your page found easier.

This is what happens is as you begin to type in your username, a red message pops up – This page isn’t eligible to have a username  – and as you keep typing this message disappears and you get a green tick saying that this name is acceptable.

Click enter and a box with the title Username isn’t Available then pops up, which is odd as it gave the green tick but then underneath it says:

This page isn’t eligible to have a username

Why can't I get my Facebook Username or Custom URL

It seems to be something to do with the admin privileges, and it’s just a bug.

If you go to Facebook’s help pages for How do I create a username for my Page? You just see this.

You’ll need to be an admin to create a username for your Page. Your Page’s username will appear below your Page’s name and in your Page’s URL to help people find and remember your Page. An example of a username could be @JaspersMarket if the Page name is Jasper’s Market.

To create a username for your Page:
  1. Click Create Page @Username on the left side of your Page
  2. Enter a username
  3. If the username is available, click Create Username
If the username you want is already taken or not approved, you’ll need to choose a different one. Make sure the username you’re trying to create follows the guidelines for custom usernames.
Keep in mind that new Pages may not immediately be able to create a username, and that your Page’s username may be removed because of inactivity.
So it does say that new pages may not immediately be able to create a username.. however, if that were the case you would not see the same sentences together like that
Username isn’t available – This Page isn’t eligible to have a username.
Something is wrong there, however, we do have a fix if you are asking – Why can’t I get my Facebook Username or Custom URL

What you need to do is add another admin. (Your friend or your own if you have another account)

  1. Click Settings at the top of your Page.
  2. Click Page Roles in the left column.
  3. Type a name or email in the box and select the person from the list that appears.
  4. Click Editor to select a role from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click Add and enter your password to confirm.

Once they have accepted the job as admin, they can then go ahead and add the Facebook username.  I think if you downgrade the new admin to editor you should be able to create the Custom URL with the original admin but I’m not sure.

This time you won’t have to go to settings but you will see the option to create your Facebook username under your name on the left its says Create Page @Username.

This option wasn’t there before when and we tried to add the username from settings.

You should then be able to create your page username without this error.

And there is the Fix for

Username isn’t available

This Page isn’t eligible to have a username.

Please share if this helped, thanks.

Twitter finally stamping down on Auto DMs

Twitter finally stamping down on Auto DMs

Are Twitter finally stamping down on Auto DMs or Direct Messages? Its seems so as a letter that the Crowdfire has received has warned them that they are going against Twitter policies. the app that helps you grow your social media accounts has been told by Twitter that the Auto DM feature that they and other apps

Crowdfire App

Crowdfire is an app that helps you grow your social media accounts. With the app, you can follow and unfollow and you can also set it to send auto DMs when someone follows you.   Twitter does not like automation and if you get caught this can mean your account being suspended.

I used to use Crowdfire a lot because it was one of the only apps around that used to tell you who had unfollowed you on twitter and they used to also tell you who unfollowed you on Instagram but I believe that was a paid feature or maybe this was also banned from Instagram.

Twitter finally stamping down on auto dms

Twitter finally stamping down on Auto DMs

These automation features have been around for a while on Crowdfire,  but it looks like Twitter is just getting around to informing app directly. Because it looks like in April the Twitter rules were updated and include details which mean that they cannot let people use their auto dm feature. Yesterday Crowdfire informed its customers of the app changes that Twitter has enforced on them.

1. The Auto DM feature is no longer allowed by Twitter for any apps. As a result, Crowdfire can no longer provide Auto DM as a feature for Twitter.

This is why you’re not able to see it in the app anymore.

This pleases me no end, I don’t know about you but I so am saturated by Auto DM’s so much that I don’t read them anymore (if I ever did) and I often miss messages from my friends that are important, if I am not careful – and besides that, people have started to Auto Dm you and tweet you at the same time, this is just such a waste of my time and anyone’s timeline.

This has been a long time coming as the Automation rules on Twitter state, it’s not allowed.

Spamming: You may not send automated Tweets or Direct Messages that are spam, or otherwise engage in spamming activity. Some examples of spammy behavior to avoid with automation include:

  • Trending topics: You may not automatically post about trending topics on Twitter.
  • Multiple posts/accounts: You may not post duplicate Tweets on one account or over multiple accounts.

Misleading links: You may not send automated Tweets or Direct Messages containing links that are misleading, including links that maliciously or deceptively redirect through landing pages or ad pages before displaying the final content.

Sensitive media: Automated Tweets and Direct Messages must comply with the Twitter Media Policy, and you should mark your account as potentially sensitive if you intend to post graphic, pornographic, or potentially sensitive media.

Aggressive following and unfollowing

Twitter has also warned Crowdfire about aggressive following and unfollowing on Twitter, which has never been allowed and can result in a ban if they catch you doing this. I thought that Crowdfire prevented you by blocking you following too many a day – but it looks like they went a little further and have allowed people to follow and unfollow more if they pay … oh dear.

We should probably just report everyone that sends a spammy auto direct message on Twitter, but they in itself would be a full-time job.

Crowdfire say that they are working with Twitter to make the app fully compliant to Twitter’s terms and conditions and to expect some changes, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Yesterday Instagram announced that you can now Watch Instagram Stories on your Desktop via the mobile web.  This is great news. I for one would like to have all options available on Instagrams Mobile web.

I like to use my PC for apps, I feel everything should be cross platform.  It’s going to be great to be able to look at these images and videos on the big screen,  For many social media managers, businesses that are on Instagram and photographers it would be amazing to be able to upload via the desktop.  Instagram say that this will be available for Stories at least!

How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat

How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat

So, you may have heard by now that last week Snapchat brought us all a new update and people are going crazy about it. Snap Map!  I’m going to tell you How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat.

However, before you freak out – Snap Map location finder isn’t on until you turn it on.   People seem to think that they need to rush to turn it off because their locations are being shown to everyone.

You first have to allow to share your location by turning on the location settings and ALLOWING your location to be found.   To just turn off Snap Maps on your phone and bypass all the drivel scroll to the end.

Before all that you have to find it – if you go to your camera screen like you are going to send Snap – pinch on the screen (like you are zooming out from a photo) and you will see this.

How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat

This is what Snapchat support say.

If you and a friend follow one another, you can share your locations with each other on the Snap Map! Only the friends you choose to share your location with will be able to see where you’re at 🗺️

Your location on the Snap Map is only updated when you’re using Snapchat — so you don’t have to worry about your location being updated in the background or anything 📵 Your location on the Map will expire after several hours, or as soon as you go into Ghost Mode.

Location Sharing Options
When you open the Snap Map for the first time, you’ll get a prompt to choose who to share your location with. Whatever you choose, you’ll be able to update this setting later at any time!

How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat

Snapchat say the purpose of this new feature is so that you can view Snaps of sporting events, celebrations, breaking news, and more from all across the world.

If you and a friend follow one another, you can share your locations with each other so you can see where they are. And only the people you choose can see your location. However be warned too that Snaps you submit to Our Story can still show up on the Map.

How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat

For me to tell you how to turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat – you will have first had to have turned on the map and allowed your location to be found, if you haven’t, you won’t even see these settings.

If you have turned it on you can change these settings by clicking the cog in the top right-hand corner of the map and you can change the setting as follows

How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat

  • Only Me (Ghost Mode): Your location won’t be visible to anyone else on the Map. When you’re in Ghost Mode, your Bitmoji will hold up a blue sign with a spooky specter 👻
  • My Friends: Your location will be visible to all of your friends on the Map as long as you are mutual friends. This includes any new friends you make too! If you want to choose this option later, go to ‘Select Friends…,’ scroll down to ‘All Friends,’ and tap ‘✓ Select All.’
  • Select Friends…: Choose specific friends to share your location with. Friends you select won’t be notified that you chose them, but they’ll be able to see your location as long as you are mutual friends!

What happens with this new feature is that you can see where exactly everyone is, to the door number – and also see what they are doing, driving, sitting, eating sleeping, not sure how that works but that’s what I’m told.

Ghost mode to me is even more creepy than the maps itself because it means that you can see where everyone else is but they can’t see where you are. So this is something that you, and especially our kids should be aware of.

How to turn off Snap Map on your iPhone

To completely turn off off Location finder on Snap Map – or make sure that it’s not turned on – go to phone settings – scroll down until you find Snapchat, and make sure that location settings are set to never. and that’s sorted.

Hopefully, now you know How to Turn off Snap Map or set Ghost Mode on Snapchat – if you are having any problems with this, please do let me know in the comments or contact me
