Can Social Media Help Spread Awareness about Bone Marrow Transplants

bone marrow transplantsBone Marrow Transplants are not exactly my usual blog subject – its not really about anything technical or a mobile app or even a social media platform, although I have blogged about cancer before as it is a big part of my life and as a big supporter for the teenage cancer trust  I believe social media can help raise awareness and support.

This time a friend who is trying to raise awareness and to spread the news about the Fireflies tour and Bone Marrow Transplants and asked me if I can help out.

My friend John started this Facebook Page, which if you can *like*  to show your support, that would be fantastic – Help Someone be Lucky   the page explains why I want to and need to help out.

The reason for this FB page is that John is planning to cycle 1000+ Km across the Alps  From Lake Geneva to Cannes in aid of #BeatBloodCANCER in the June 9-18 2014

Why is he doing this crazy thing?
John is doing this because he had a blood cancer, leukaemia, and had a Bone Marrow Transplant 5 years ago.

The best chance of a cure from leukaemia is a bone marrow transplant.

Now, I admit I didn’t know much about this subject, blood cancer is a little different and I thought that you probably don’t know much either – so here’s what I found out.

The facts

Your blood is the most amazing system in your body. Every second MILLIONS of blood cells are being made by your body inside your bones and every second MILLIONS of worn out cells exit themselves naturally after only a matter of days or weeks traveling round doing all kinds of essential work inside you, keeping you alive and protecting you from getting sick – it’s a vital part of our immune system.

There are several different types of blood cell. Too many or too few of any of them will cause a problem. The body has a system constantly ensuring you make just the right amount of the blood cells of the right type at just the right time. This goes on, day in day out every day without you being aware of any of it. Blood cancer is what happens when the programming of the blood production system inside your bones gets damaged and begins to go wrong.

Modern medicines are able to control blood cancers for many affected people. But in some cases the medicines aren’t effective.Blood cancer can be life threatening  – people affected by blood cancer could die from infections that are not normally life threatening or if the cancer can’t be controlled by medicine. Blood Cancer can be life threatening  – it affects the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic systems and the immune system is affected this means that they could die from infections, that are not normally life threatening

30.000 people in the UK are told they have Blood Cancer per year, this can start at any age!

The most common types of blood cancers are

  • Leukaemia
  • Childhood Leukaemia
  • Lymphoma

People with leukaemia produce abnormal while blood cells that accumulate in the bone marrow, which prevents other important blood cells growing.

Bone Marrow is found in the hollow centres of some bones. Its a spongy tissue that contains these stem cells.

Bone marrow transplants

Bone Marrow Transplants

For people with blood cancer that medicines can’t control, Bone Marrow Transplants are required to replace completely the production system inside the bones completely – with a donor’s cancer-free system – so that normal blood cells can be made again.

For a person to receive someone else’s blood production cells, called stem cells, he or she must be so closely matched at a cellular level to the donor that their body is tricked into accepting the donor’s blood stem cells and allows them to replace their damaged, cancer-carrying cells. When a donor is needed, they are often needed quickly. Waiting for someone who matches to turn up is not the best option.

John was lucky – he received bone marrow cells from a complete stranger – who was 1 volunteer donor out of 11 million in the world who happened to perfectly match.

Half of the people waiting for a donor in the UK today will find a person who matches them. The person that saves the life of someone you know who develops blood cancer is most likely to be someone who has been on the volunteer register for some time, they could even be in another country. It’s a pure numbers game, like cracking a code – the problem is it’s so difficult to find a match. But, the more people volunteer to be donors, the more the chances of survival for everyone with blood cancer improve.

Volunteers needed.

So, we need more volunteers and that is the crux of it.  I say we, because who knows if any of us or someone we know is going to be affected and need a donor.  There are 3000 people already waiting for donors in the UK.

Taken from Johns soluckyjohn website, he says

  • HOW DONATIONS ARE MADE HAS BECOME A LOT EASIER
Bone marrow cells are normally harvested after an injection that makes the donor’s body temporarily produce more blood stem cells than normal so they float around in the blood. These cells can be filtered out of the blood NOT BY A NEEDLE IN THE BONE

They are really interested in finding young men, they are the most lacking here.

There is a fund raising page with more information, with a target of just £5000 can we help that go over the top?

So, the game has been around for sometime and I’m very late in writing this but apart from the addictive game itself, I wanted to say just how excellent playdots tweets are. Their twitter account is called @playdots they have 11k followers and and they post really cool, cute, colourful pictures of the dots, using the dots as a part of the image – and that is what attracted me to the game, seriously… I know, but I love cute and colourful – and games that are wonderful to look at.  However to me these images are a brilliant strategy to get noticed.  Although by now, as you can tell, they have been noticed big time, and you now see Dots before your eyes, they are everywhere, talked about on lots of websites and shows and videos.

I’m sure they won’t mind if I just post a few of the images here. (if they do maybe they can tell me and I’ll remove them) They also post these pictures on the PlayDots Facebook page which has 161k followers

mute users on twitter

You Can Now Mute Users on Twitter

Are you fed up with the noise on Twitter but you don’t want to be nasty and unfollow your friends, well your prayers have been answered as you can now mute users on Twitter   This new feature which is being rolled out over the next few weeks will be available to anyone that uses the iPhone and Andriod apps or Twitter.com.  This button was inevitable as people are moving away from the noise on to less busy platforms and groups, or are just unfollowing loads of people. People want to stop the noise on Twitter it seems (Whats wrong with list?)   This is a great move by Twitter but it makes me concerned at how many people will mute me. This also means that the follower number now means even less than it did before as you might have 100k followers that all have you muted

Twitter introduces the ability to mute users on Twitter

When you mute someone you won’t see any of their tweets or re-tweets in your timeline so of course you will no longer get notifications from that user either, because you have muted their tweets.  The muted user can still reply, see your tweets and retweet you. However you won’t see that in your timeline because you have them muted.  And the bit that you are all worried about – No, the user will not know that you have muted them on twitter, I can see some of you are very happy to be able to mute people on Twitter!

Muting Facebook Users

This is very similar to the option you used to have to mute people on Facebook – which was very handy but they took this one way – you used to be able to  to your friends profile, hover over where it says Friends and remove the tick on Show in Newsfeed – which enabled you to stay friends but not see all of their posts in your news feed. All you can do now is – you have to go the actual post and click I don’t like this post or hide this post, or don’t show this post – and at the bottom of a NewFeed post you will see Make NewsFeed better where you will answer some questions for Facebook to decide what you see, hmmm.   Of course both of these maybe negative features do have the opposite options, you can favorite someone on Twitter so it comes up in your alerts, and on Twitter you can get notifications of a persons tweets.

How To Mute Users On Twitter

mute users on twitter

From a tweet – click more – and mute @user

mute users on twitter

From their profile page – click the gear – and mute @user

So if you decide, its now all too quiet since you muted users on Twitter you can just unmute then, and no-one will ever know.

Which now I see a use for this, certain times when everyone is tweeting the same thing about a TV program or an event – Mute!!

How to add the new header photo on Twitter 2014

newyouChanges have been made recently on our favourite social network, we now have a new header photo on Twitter plus there is a whole new web profile experience.  This new experience is rolling out to all users, however most are not editing their profiles because they have no idea how to add the new header photo on Twitter.

About the New Profile and New Header Photo on Twitter

People have complained that Twitter is just trying to be like Facebook because Facebook is more popular – but Twitter say they are just making your profile more dynamic and visual.

The new web profile has these options….

  • Best Tweets – Tweets that get more engagement will appear larger now so these will be seen easily
  • Filtered Tweets –  You can choose which timeline to view when looked at other profiles. Just select – Tweets, Tweets with photos/videos, or Tweets and replies.
  • Pin your favorite tweet – you can now pin your favourite tweet to the top of your profile

pin

New Header Photo on Twitter

And of course the biggest change –  is the new photos or images, your profile picture is now bigger and your headers are huge, enormous in fact – and you now have the added bonus of not having the profile picture slap bang in the middle of your header – so you can create much better images – although the profile picture is still in the same place on a smartphone or iPad so its good to remember that when creating your image.

When you see this image – click take a look

Twitter3

The sizes required are

The new header photo on Twitter 1500 x 500 px

The new profile picture on Twitter is 400 x 400 px

Also just while we are here – the best size for your twitter feed images – so that you see the whole image in your feed is – 1024 x 512 pixels

twitter4
Click Edit Profile and you will see where to click and upload your images.
Although Twitter says that the size is 1500 x 500 the area that you need to concentrate on for the header photo is in the centre and needs to be approx 1256 x 337 px

See my header photo example – which you can use as a template for the new cover picture (or header) – The blue area you cannot see at all on Twitter.com… so remember to have a border around your image or it will be stretched and/or you won’t be able to see the outside edge.

new header photo on Twitter

This is how it now looks on Twitter.com

new header photo on Twitter
So, I hope that helps you to add your new header photo on Twitter, it did take a bit of messing around with sizes for me, as although Twitter says that the size is 1500 x 500 px its not just that – so I thought this could help someone.

Just Sayin App – Twitter on Steroids

logoIf you ever feel confined by social networking restrictions, what you need is the Just Sayin App – Twitter on Steroids, as we like to call it.    I’ve been testing out the live Beta of this voice application (which embeds your voice messages on your social networks) for a few months now, and I am totally addicted, well we do know I get addicted easily to brilliant apps or software but this just blows your mind, seriously

Cloudtalk has now announced the release of Just Sayin’ App which is FREE voice application on iOS and Android, and now there is also a web based version.

What the story about the Just Sayin App ?

Just Sayin was a voice application which was founded by Cloudtalk  a  few years ago.  Sadly though the previous versions were ahead of their time, and certain things just didn’t go according to plan. CloudTalk built the first cloud-based platform for hosting any social communication with voice as a central part of the user experience.  However it was back again to the drawing board the Just Sayin voice based application and not giving up, Sami Yousif  Director of Social Media & Creative has been working hard over the last year with his team to get it right.

We spoke to Sami Yousif to find out exactly what had to happen.

“I Re-Architected the workflow, redesigned the UI and UIX. Changed the focus of the app so that it is more of a Utility to Twitter and Facebook. Implemented several features that were not part of the Original app, including: Private Messaging, Embedding the audio into Twitter, Photo posts on Facebook now have larger images and adding video. As well as making it easier for people to find new users with the Latest Tab, Hot, and Trending.”

Now, Just Sayin is the first voice conversation application for social media which allows cross posting to Twitter and Facebook.

With this application you can not only talk to your followers on Twitter using their @name you can also include either a image or video and text along with your voice, so you get a lot more power to your message.

How to use Just Sayin App

First you download the Application from iTunes or Google Play  and you sign in with Twitter or Facebook – Twitter always seems best, I’m not sure why – I think maybe because it just is! 🙂

On the messages you can see an Arrow which is for you to reply the number is how many replies it has had already

(The arrow will be changing in an update this week)

A ReSay button in the middle  – Which is the same as Re-tweet or Share

And the star is the Like button.

just sayin app (5)

And the best thing is that users don’t need to leave Twitter or to even have the Just Sayin App to listen to/view/or watch the message – they just click the link and a box opens like this

justsayingapp (2)

So, thats Just Saying App – Twitter on Steroids – of course you also post to Facebook and maybe even Google+ later, but I think its just so perfect for Twitter.   Its been hard for Sami to get the bugs ironed out and there is another update for the iOS app coming this week which should be the final one.

And also shiny and brand new is the Just Sayin App website, where you will be able to put full length pod-casts and videos, and do everything you can from the application, which is what we all love in an application. You also get your own vanity URL so snap up your account soon before your name goes.

Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.1 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
