Google updates privacy policies – worried much?

Google announced a few days ago that they are updating their privacy policies.

They are now also sending out emails to everyone with a Google account, how much more upfront can they be and still people think they are hiding something.

The changes come into effect as from the 1st of March but already people are voicing their concerns on Facebook and Twitter.

One person said they will feel like they are being watched all the time, they said this publically on a twitter account with many followers 🙂

Google amalgamated all policies into just one privacy policy, to make it easier for everyone.

They say that they are creating one experience  – You log into Google Account and all of your accounts become one –  your Gmail – Search – You Tube and Calender.  In short, all of the information from these Google products will be shared with each other, to enable Google to understand us better and to help our searches be more accurate and target us with better ads.

I love Google – Google+, Youtube, Gmail, and everything that goes with it.

Its seems that some of us are worried that this just means that Google are keeping and storing more information about us, creating a big brother! This does not make sense to me, they already have all of this information anyway.

Google already knows all about you

You can still edit your own personal information to share whatever you wish on Google’s Dashboard – btw have you looked there recently?  You will see all of the information that Google already has about you.

If you are paranoid that Google are the bad guys, there are still ways that you can stop Google combining information from your Google account.  Such as you do not need to log in to you tube when watching videos – or you can use an incognito page when using chrome. You can even hide by deleting cookies and history.

Google say another reason for this update is because they want to make it easier to read and understand – Read Google’s terms of service and google’s privacy policy for yourself, I’m sure it will put your mind at rest.

No change could be for the worse!

Google do stress that they do not sell our personal information or even share it without our permission, unless you are a criminal or such like.

They say that these changes will bring us better ads – which means more money for them in the long run – you can change or remove your ad preferences – and by deleting your cookies this also resets any information that they have regarding ads.

Will the information even be accurate?

I laughed actually when I went to look at the ads preferences –  they say that they infer our age and gender based on the websites that you’ve visited – mine say Age 18-24 Male – haha!  You can also remove or edit this information at any time, I’m leaving mine.

I don’t think that I have anything to hide (not much anyway) so I think it will be exciting to see if the changes have any effect on our searches.

However, if you are scared that Google is going to do nasty things with all of this information, you can hide it from them if you want, with these many settings or hide outs.

As we have to do with Facebook, adjust your settings accordingly.

Are you concerned, why?  Have I missed the point?  Let us know..

Hope this helps

It wasn’t me! Twitter admits to unfollowing for us

Twitter has confirmed that there is a known issue which seems as if it is unfollowing our followers.

Well, what they actually say is that it just appears that your friends have been unfollowed but really they haven’t.  However this doesn’t explain why you cannot dm users that you know that you were following previously.

The first comments on this page from this Twitter support blog are 6 months old, of which there are 345 comments – so I assume thats how old the post is but still we have this problem.

People say a fix is to reload the page, it doesn’t show those users as unfollowed anymore. I haven’t tried this yet.

However, its good news to know that Twitter to acknowledge the fact, as its pretty embarrassing to say – I didn’t unfollow you, it must have been twitter – yeah sure!

Mind you, now its a good excuse to use, if say you unfollowed someone by mistake or in the heat of the moment! ha!  No, of course I wouldn’t do that!

This unfollowing is not a new issue, it has been going on for years.

I myself have noticed an increase over the past few months, I very rarely unfollow people so I know its not something I’ve done.

I have some questions for you…

  1. Have you noticed that you had unfollowed people, that you know you would never have unfollowed.
  2. Did the user tell you that they had been unfollowed or did you notice?
  3. Did you notice if your follower count changed?

I’d be interested to find out these things, if you wouldn’t mind taking the time, to just answer them here. Thanks.

Hope this helps.

How to find an RSS feed on a Blogger Blogspot blog.

The reason for this post is that I wanted to add someones RSS feed to my new reader and for some reason they don’t have it displayed on their blog and this is how I found it

What is an RSS feed – This is a very detailed blog about what is RSS on Problogger, everything you need to know is there about RSS feeds.

How to find an RSS feed on a blogspot blog.

Blogspot, thought they would make this difficult to find for some reason as,  most blogs or websites you would just type /feed or /rss something like that at the end of the URL but blogger in its wisdom decided to use this….

So all you have to do is just add that to the end of the blogspot url like this…

This is my cousins awesome blog btw, about love, laughter, movies, books, reviews, and beauty, things she loves basically 🙂

You can check that is it correct by typing that into your search bar, if its correct you will see something like this

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?><rss xmlns:atom='' xmlns:openSearch='' xmlns:georss='' xmlns:gd='' xmlns:thr='' version='2.0'><channel><atom:id>,1999:blog-821247123802100396</atom:id><lastBuildDate>Fri, 20 Jan 2012 04:09:42 +0000</lastBuildDate><category>Charlotte</category><category>Club Tropicana</category><category>Swoon</category><category>Natalie Portman</category><category>Wuthering Heights</category><category>Edward Cullen</category><category>ITV2</category><category>Eddie Redmayne</category><category>Photo</category><category>90's</category><category>Movie</category><category>The Hills</category><category>Posh Spice</category><category>Take That Reunion.</category><category>Tom Cruise</category><category>Robbie Williams</category><category>Mick Hucknall</category><category>Nanny Pat</category><category>Royal Albert Hall</category><category>Destiny</category><category>dating</category><category>Handsome</category><category>Spice Girls</category><category>Kelly and Jack Osbourne</category><category>Phil Collins</category><category>Celestine Prophecy</category><category>Brother</category><category>New York</category><category>Isabel Losada</category><category>alanis morrisette</category><category>Tulisa</category><category>Wedding</category><category>Christmas</category><category>saggittarian</category><category>Madonna</category><category>josie gibson</category><category>Stephanie Meyer</category><category>Christina Aguilera</category><category>The best thing I never had</category><category>Atomic Kitten</category><category>journalist</category><category>Last Christmas</category><category>Snow</category><category>Love</category><category>Meg Ryan</category><category>George Michael</category><category>Cheryl Cole</category><category>Prince</category><category>girlie</category><category>heels</category><category>Kate Bush</category><category>Victoria Beckham</category><category>Simply Red</category><category>Someone like you</category><category>Kate Winslet</category><category>bloggers</category><category>George Clooney</category><category>Prince William</category><category>Golden Globes</category><category>Fairytale</category><category>NYC</category><category>quote</category><category>John James and Josie</category><category>Audrina</category><category>All the lovers</category><category>The Battersea Park Road to Paradise</category><category>Bridget Jones</category><category>Josh Holloway</category><category>Gym</category><category>Greek</category><category>Blackberry</category><category>Princess Diana</category><category>Princess and the Frog</category><category>DJ</category><category>new year</category><category>Obama</category><category>Grey's Anatomy</category><category>Love.</category><category>N-Dubz</category><category>Reunion</category><category>Marilyn Monroe</category><category>Smug marrieds</category><category>School</category><category>shoes</category><category>blonde</category><category>Kevin Truong</category><category>Rpyal Wedding</category><category>Single</category><category>jennifer grey</category><category>recycling</category><category>Britney Spears</category><category>Sex and the City</category><category>kisses</category><category>paradise</category><category>Top Gun</category><category>Jessica Biel</category><category>Yoga</category><category>McSteamy</catego

SOPA and why popular websites are joining the blackout

SOPA – Stop Online Piracy Act – A proposed Bill to stop or restrict access to sites that host pirated content.

Sopa is basically looking for a way to finally completely shutdown all torrent sites such at Pirate Bay.

Good you say……

So then why are so many social media or websites and search engines supporting or joining the black out protest against SOPA and PIPA  which is the Protect IP Act the companion bill.

Sopa Blackout

Sites such at Google, Reddit, Wikipedia, Minecraft, Twitpic, Flickr, Tumblr, Umgur, Boing boing, and many other sites are opposing the acts saying that American companies being asked to censor the internet. Its Big Brother. They say, the internet will be fully censored, people won’t share anything and if they do, search engines, websites, ad networks and providers are to withhold their services.  Pirates would include anyone that is infringing copyrights. Thus will be the end of the internet as we know it.  So the sites are protesting this now to raise awareness while SOPA is on hold.

List of websites supporting the SOPA blackout

The RedTape Contronicles say this

SOPA’s supporters say the bill would give intellectual property rights holders — such as TV studios — a powerful new tool to protect their creative works. But opponents say it would allow federal authorities to shut down entire portions of the Internet without due process, and fundamentally alter the Internet’s ability to provide a platform for free speech.

I’m not sure what would happen to sites such as YouTube, read on… explains it here

If SOPA passes, copyright holders would be able to complain to law enforcement officials and get websites shut down. Search engines and other providers would have to block rogue sites when ordered to do so by a judge. Sites could be punished for hosting pirated content in the first place — and Internet companies are worried that they could be held liable for users’ actions.

And The Telegraph said

The most controversial provisions of SOPA would force websites that carry user-generated material, such as Wikipedia, to impose new restrictions on posting or constantly monitor activity, it’s claimed. Under current laws if websites remove pirated content when they are notified by the copyright holder they are not liable for damages.

Strangely Twitter is not going to participate in the blackout over the bills, even though they were great supporters of the opposition.

I’ve tried to explain this in the simplest of ways as many people have asked why is the bill being opposed? or What is the problem the pirates are criminals, it’s illegal, they should be stopped.  Maybe this will show you.

I’m not sure how widespread this blackout will actually be on the 18th January 2012 but I do hope there is some sort of an impact this seems to have gone a little to far.

You can show your support on wordpress self hosted websites by going to new plugins and search for stop SOPA ribbon, like I have.

Hope this helps

How to enable the new Blogger or Blogspot new threaded comments

Bloggers on Google’s Blogger blog sites have been asking the question for a long time, when will we get threaded comments like you can have on websites such as wordpress.

Now they can, today Blogger announced they have made another improvement to Blogger and that is that they new support threaded commenting.

Threaded commenting makes it much easier to see whether someone is actually just commenting on the blog or in fact replying to another comment.

This makes it much more likely for people to leave feedback on a blog as they can submit there on view on someone else’s response to your blog post.

For instance – on my blog problems with twitter on the iphone 4s

Bob might comment – This solution didn’t fix it for me, its still not working.

Janice can now reply to Bobs comment  – You must be doing something wrong, as it worked for me and hopefully Bob has clicked notify by mail of any updates to comments on this post – then Bob will see it and he could even reply back.

Where as before Janice would have written Bob you must be doing something wrong.  And now that comment could be far away from Bob’s comment and make no sense to anyone and now we have a discussion going on right on our blogs.

This should be enabled without you doing anything but you can check by going to

SettingsOther and click Full from the Allow Blog Feed drop down.

And then go to SettingsPosts and Comments and select Embedded from the Comment Location dropdown.

There are some problems however, bloggers are complaining that if you get a few blog comments it does take a long time to load the page.  Also some gadgets aren’t working, it is suggested that if this is happening that you reset the gadget to default.

If the new threaded comments are there but not working  – Helen, beauty blogger from Sparlz and Shine read that someone took off all of their gadgets and readded one by one to find the offending gadget, and it was the twitter gadget. Helen removed this and all its fine.

One more thing if you have  a custom template, not just a premade blogger template it seems you might not have the feature at all yet, some do and some don’t.

Enjoy the new feature bloggers 🙂

Hope this helps

Thanks to @tsunimee for her tweets 🙂

Don’t give up! New Year’s Resolutions [Infographic]

It seems that New years resolutions are made to break, a little bit like rules!

We seem to set ourselves impossible tasks or too many at once.

We are 10 days into 2012 now… How are you doing with your 2012 resolutions?

If you said you were going to Eat Healthy Food and went out for a huge steak and chips this weekend, does that mean you’ve failed as this infographic suggests?  No, of course not – it just means you tripped up along the way. Besides you can have a treat now and then, ok it was a little early into the year, but don’t give up!

If you have chosen more than one resolution such as…

  1. Get Fit
  2. Loose weight
  3. Give up Smoking
  4. Get a better job
  5. Leave Facebook
  6. Join Google+

…just decide which one is the most important and stick to that for 6 months or so, then maybe tackle the next one.  You will just go crazy trying to do them all at once and probably give up completely.  Choose the easiest first like joining Google+ 🙂

Keep trying

You can make the resolutoins at any point in the year by the way, it doesn’t have to be new year, maybe decide that in March you will start going to the gym after you have not smoked for 3 months, your body will love you for it.

I like to see these targets as Goals – rather than New Years Resolutions. Set yourself Goals throughout the year, and if you don’t achieve it at first, carry on, don’t give up, you know what you need to do, so just keep trying. Ask for help, no one will think any less of you – get support from friends, family, doctors or other professionals that are there to help.

Don’t set yourself impossible tasks – perhaps just take little steps towards it.

How are you doing with your resolutions?  Are you winning?  What resolutions did you make?

How to get Facebook’s new Timeline and What the heck is it?

introducing timeline

Can’t wait to get Facebook’s New Timeline ?

You will have it very soon, don’t worry! However if you have been chomping at the bit since the launch of Timeline in December for your Facebook Profile to change and can’t wait any longer you can get it right now.

Before we go into that, some are still asking – What is Facebook timeline?  Facebook timeline is a new profile layout that will show your Facebook activity from the time you joined Facebook. In a Time… Line!  Clever?  So, now your Facebook friends can look through your whole Facebook networking history not just what you posted today or last week.  Fun or Scary?  You may want to change some settings, I will show you how. I’m surprised actually that some of my most safety conscious friends are loving the new timeline.

This is Mick Say’s Timeline…He’s from the Online Marketing Academy – I’m sure he won’t mind me showing you what it looks like.

I do like the fact that you can have a cover picture (the large picture at the top) it makes the page look much more professional and interesting.

Ok I will stop going on and tell you how to get the new Facebook timeline now.

All you have to do is go to Facebook’s page Introducing timeline and click the green button at the bottom of the page get timeline

Thankfully you have a full Seven days to play around with how it looks and the privacy settings, which you will want to change, before it actually goes live on your own Facebook page. However if you are finished editing or don’t want to you can publish it whenever you like.  Even if you don’t activate the New timeline now, when it eventually does come to you, you still get those seven days to adjust the settings or remove posts that you don’t want to be seen.

I can see this being a problem for those people that only go on to Facebook once a week – I’m sure there are such people – they won’t even know that the new timeline is on their page.  So getting it now might be an option for them.

You can remove certain stories – posts or comments for which I wrote a blog about in  September on Adding and Removing Stories (Pictures and statuses) from your New Timeline.

To alter how posts are seen and who by

Go to your Activity Log which is the button on the right under your cover picture.

Here you can alter each item to Public, Friends, friends except acquaintances, only me or custom, and more. Or you can remove it.

This on the Facebook help pages there is  “Timeline: A New King of Profile” this will give you all of the information that you need to know about the timeline.

Timeline Basics

Related Topics

I think that just about covers it, I hope that you are now clear on what Facebook’s new timeline is and how to change the settings.  If you have any questions and can’t find the answer, please don’t hesitate to put a comment here and I will try to help you with it.
Hope this helps.

Switch to Pink Facebook Hoax Spreading Fast

Message appearing on Facebook claiming to change your Facebook Pink, is a survey scam

There are ways to switch to a Pink Facebook using Chrome which you can Google for but there is a link spreading on Facebook at the moment, which is a hoax.

Title – Switch to Pink Facebook (Limited Time)

The link here is the same as all survey scams – when you click it, it spams all of your friends facebook walls telling them of the good news, that you have a pink facebook, which you don’t realise until its too late.

You are asked to first fill in a survey for verification but of course, nothing happens, they now have lots of information from you and the scammers have been paid for their efforts in scamming you.

If you see this on your wall delete it, and tell the person to inform followers that it is a scam, and follow these instructions to remove a facebook scam.

Always check out suspicious links before clicking it, IF IN DOUBT DON’T CLICK !

Update : There are now other scams – asking you click the link to get Black Facebook – Blue Facebook, and probably rainbow Facebook – as I said these are fake. There are ways to change the background and ways to get colours in chrome but I’d search on Google for those if I were you.

Hope this helps

iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner does your housework

iRobot was founded in 1990 (then called IS Robotics) by Rodney Brooks, Colin Angel (CEO) and Helen Greiner.  The company was originally involved with space exploration by robots and worked with organizations such as NASA where they developed a robot for lunar exploration. Cool huh!

However in 1997 after they had developed at AutoCleaner for someone else, a team was gathered to build the world’s first affordable home floor cleaning robot.

Since 2002 iRobot have sold over 6 million home cleaning robots.  6 million? What sort of people have these? They must be just used in offices or hotels, places with large open spaces, I can’t see how it would work in cramped spaces with lots of furniture…

There is even a Roomote – a Roomba itunes app that is used to control your iRobot, Roomba! Although check what the description says on the app store before you download.

I would love to know if you have one of these, hoover robots!

Hoover trivia

When I was younger in Britain vacuum cleaners were called hoovers as The hoover company was the leading manufacturer of many household goods especially vacuum cleaners. We even still use it now as a verb, I am going to hoover! Even so I thought it was wearing off but I was shocked to see this entry on Google.

I love this video from 2007, believe it or not 🙂

7 Reasons why you need a Roomba Robotic Vacuum

  1. It’s a Robot
  2. Dirt detection
  3. It can go anywhere
  4. Stair Detection
  5. It’s Thorough
  6. It’s Fearless
  7. No Cleanup

There are many companies that have developed robotic vacuum cleaners – most others are more like a carpet sweeper with motorised brushes, but the Roomba contains a motor which creates a vacuum in addition to these brushes.

Roomba Prices range from an very inexpensive £249.99 to this years SUPER MODEL the 780 at £499 cheaper than an iPad! 🙂

Roomba® 780
Vacuum Cleaning Robot Specs

It features a refined, sleeker design with a touchpad interface. Dirt Detect™ Series 2 and an AeroVac™ Series 2 Bin allow even more efficient cleaning, while HEPA filters leave the air fresher. Roomba® 780 also includes onboard scheduling.  8cm tall to fit under most furniture.

It sounds good doesn’t it …. but I can’t see it doing a good job in a busy, dirty, household full of kids and pets. It is just a carpet sweeper with a bit of suck. Isn’t it?

I’d love to test one of these robotic vacuum cleaners out – if any company such as iRobot or Samsung wishes to offer me one! 🙂 Yes Samsung do one called the Navibot!

If you don’t ask..right?   Anyway … if you have one or know anyone that uses any versions of a robot cleaner please let us know the low down.

Hope this helps
